The Winona YMCA Winfins returned home Sunday from the YMCA State Meet with some hardware, some bragging rights, and memories of a well swum meet at the premier competition site in the Midwest.
Swimming or diving at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center is always worth the trip. Even in a huge meet like the YMCA State Championship where both pools are a flurry of activity, it is an awesome venue. It seems to bring out the best in athletes and Sunday was no exception.
The Winhawks walked or more accurately swam, away with three new YMCA State Meet records. Two of these new records belong to one long time Winfin now HS Freshman Cal Dretske, for the 100 IM and the 200 Yard Breaststroke. The other goes to Cotter Middle School turned Winhawk Kyle Schneider in the 200 Yard Butterfly. Congratulations both you guys on your new records and your joining the TWELVE state records already held by Winfin individuals and relays!
Along with those State Records came 9 First place finishes, 7 Second place finishes and 6 Third place finishes. All told the Winfins amassed 1,274 points good for 5th place! Congratulations Winfins!
