This is my blog that follows swimming & diving in Winona MN and those Winonans that have left to swim elsewhere. Occasionally I will post items of info related to swimming & diving in general.

If you were waiting for a good one to take in, THIS IS IT!

Winona (3-4, 2-4) plays host to Faribault (2-7, 2-5) in the last dual meet of the season for both teams.

The Winona Winhawks will celebrate Senior Night Thursday night as they wrap up their 2010-2011 Dual Meet season. The Winhawks are just off a tough loss to Rochester JM who is right above them in the Big 9 standings. Thursday the tables are turned and the Winhawks try to keep Faribault in their position of right underneath them in the Big 9 Standings.

Key Match-ups to watch for the evening could be…….. every race.  Winona and Faribault match up quite evenly. Faribault gets the slight edge having an all purpose Senior in Luke Sadergaski. He can be plugged into a number of different races, from sprints to butterfly to breaststroke and be competitive in them.

The 200 Freestyle will give Winhawk Jr. Joey Kleinow and Cotter Freshman Hodd Gorman a chance to set the tone early. If they can team up on the Falcon’s Junior David Collins, it could get the Winhawks off to a great start.

The 200 IM could be a battle of the Youngsters. Faribault has a Freshman in Dakota Vininski swimming very comparable times to Winona’s Freshman Cal Drestske and 8th Grader Kyle Schneider. It should be a great race for all four lengths.

The 50 Free swings back to a veteran showdown and should see Winhawk Senior Co-Captain Louie La Porta taking on Faribault’s Senior Luke Sadergaski.

Diving should once again see Sr. Co-Captain Justin Bublitz leading the charge for the Winhawks. Sr. Stan Petkov needs to be on his game but should be taking 2nd. The Falcon Diver Brandon Stadler typically scores in the 150’s which puts him right when Dan Karnick can have a great night and secure the 1-2-3.

The next great race should be the 500 Freestyle. The Winhawk’s rising star of the season has to be Cotter Freshman Hodd Gorman.  Gorman has improved his time 8 out of the 9 times he has swum the event this year trimming nearly a half a minute off his swim time. Faribault has a couple of 5:30 ballpark swimmers in Sr. Morgan Melton and Freshman Dakota Vininski. This will be an epic battle intensified by the 5 ½ minute length.

The 200 Free Relay should be a close contest.

Next up to watch will be the 100 Breaststroke. The other young bright spot for the Winhawks, Freshman Cal Dretske will have his hands full with the Faribault Senior Luke Sadergaski and Junior Issac Bimberg. All 3 of them can do a 1:11 and will probably be nose to nose the entire race.

\The 400 Free relay will come down to who has the most firepower left. Both teams have had low and high times depending on who swam earlier and who was left standing at the end.

It will be a great cap to the dual meet season and you should turn out to take in a great night of racing!
