This is my blog that follows swimming & diving in Winona MN and those Winonans that have left to swim elsewhere. Occasionally I will post items of info related to swimming & diving in general.

Ain’t nothin’ like bein’ there in person!

The Big Ten Championships rotate through the league to venues capable of hosting an event like this. So the meet only comes around every 5-6 years. I took advantage of it being in Minneapolis in 2011 and am SO glad I did.

I was privileged with admittance to the deck for most of the Big Ten Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships (that is when I wasn’t officiating at the HS Section 1AA Championships in Rochester). Acting as Administration Referee, I had time between my duties to watch some great races and ALL the awesome diving.

Final Meet Results and stories/Notes can be found at the MN Gopher Men’s Swimming page. They did a great job covering the meet and providing information, photos and videos!

 Meet Results at:

The University of MN’s Michael Richards repeats as winner of the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle. The first time a swimmer has done that at Big 10’s in almost 50 years! For his feat he was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Meet and made All-Big Ten!

See lots more content, videos and info at the Men’s Gopher Swimming Facebook Page.

Even though you missed the meet in person, you can watch a recap of all the action on The Big Ten Network on your local cable.

You can see some great swimming AND GREAT DIVING!

Purdue’s David Boudia won all 3 diving events. Boudia won the first diving event, 1 Meter Springboard with a score of 467.40 points, breaking his own conference and meet records from 2009 as well as the pool record at Minnesota's University Aquatic Center. He finished only 1.25 points shy of his Purdue record from 2010. It was his sixth career Big Ten championship title and the junior also opened his weekend of competition by emerging victorious in the only diving event he did not win in 2010. He bested the second-place finisher by 91.8 points.

Boudia duplicated his record-setting trifecta of Thursday by scoring 509.90 points Friday from the 3-meter board. In the process, he established a new pool record at Minnesota's University Aquatic Center and eclipsed his conference and Big Ten Championships benchmarks from 2009. Boudia won the event by 90 points and was awarded six perfect 10s and one 9.5 on the fifth dive of his list, a forward 3 1/2 somersault pike (107B).

Boudia won the platform Saturday with a Purdue-record score of 557.90 points. He also established new Big Ten conference and meet records as well as a new pool benchmark at Minnesota’s University Aquatic Center. He eclipsed his own records in all four instances.  Boudia scored five perfect 10s on his first dive of the platform finals. He received two additional 10s on his fifth dive. He capped his career at the Big Ten Championships as an eight-time conference champ.
