This is my blog that follows swimming & diving in Winona MN and those Winonans that have left to swim elsewhere. Occasionally I will post items of info related to swimming & diving in general.

Gustavus Adolphus College
St. Cloud State University
University of Illinois
Carleton College
Minnesota State University, Mankato
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
South Dakota State University
University of North Dakota
University of Minnesota, Morris
St. Olaf College
St. Mary’s University
St. John's University
University of St. Thomas
Morningside College
Augsburg College
University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire (Diving only)

It was a huge meet with both pools going at all times. The slower half of the heats were
held in the West Pool, first Women then Men while the faster heats were held in
the East Pool, first Women then Men. If you were watching for multiple swimmers
you had to really be on your toes.

Diving was in the morning and again in the afternoon between the Noon and 6PM swimming sessions. They held the 1 and 3 Meter Diving competitions for Men & Women at the same time. Men on 3 Meter, Women on 1 Meter in the morning, then reversed and both dove at the same time in the afternoon. There was always someone in the air or doing an approach with announcing going on regardless of who was doing what. There were about 40 women divers, 35 Men and took about 2 hours, I was in 7th heaven. Only saw one diver hit the board, a woman on 3 meter doing a reverse. You could tell who was a former diver or not in the stands by who gasped and flinched and who didn’t. I didn’t react but Coach really jumped when it happened.  The diving was great, the divers from the U dominated the results and I saw some 8’s and even 9’s awarded that were pretty legitimate. Former Rochester Mayo diver Chris White was there diving for St. Cloud State. He did very well  and finished right behind the U of MN divers. JJ was there with his St. Mary’s University divers.

There were Winona Alum in the water as well. They did well by my assessment, but they always think they could have done better.

Gopher Junior Matt Papenfuss raced some of his usual events and then also threw in the 100 and 200 Butterfly. Matt was named to the Big 10 competition team and will get to compete in his home pool when the Big 10 Championships take place later this month. Abbey Staats finished her season at this meet. She gave it a good try but couldn’t get quite low enough to qualify for Big 10 Team this year. Aimee Peterson was at the meet also representing her St. Cloud Huskies. Word is she wished she had had the time to work out last summer with the Wizards, she is really feeling it this season having been off workout for so long.
