The U of MN Gopher Women begin their quest for another Big Ten title this evening. With three titles under their belt, the most recent in 2008, they enter this year's contest the highest ranked Big 10 Team, but that is not as reassuring as it sounds. The Gopher Women are ranked 13th in the country by the CSCAA (College Swim Coaches Assoc of Am) and have been for the better part of the season. What muddies up the water is that 6 of the Gophers' opponents for the Big Ten title are ranked right behind them.
In what is shaping up to be a barn burner of a conference meet, the Gophers at 13 are followed by:
Rank Prev Team Points
13 13 Minnesota 500
14 14 Indiana 458
16 15 Michigan 322
17 17 Wisconsin-Madison 316
19 18 Ohio State 252
20 19 Purdue 251
(and Penn State finishes just outside the top 25 list in the poll voting in 26th)
Further complicating the picture is that Indiana, ranked immediately behind the Gophers, is the two time defending Big 10 champion AND the meet is being help in THEIR pool.

It should be a GREAT meet to watch!
This is my blog that follows swimming & diving in Winona MN and those Winonans that have left to swim elsewhere. Occasionally I will post items of info related to swimming & diving in general.
