This is my blog that follows swimming & diving in Winona MN and those Winonans that have left to swim elsewhere. Occasionally I will post items of info related to swimming & diving in general.

Ain’t nothin’ like bein’ there in person!

The Big Ten Championships rotate through the league to venues capable of hosting an event like this. So the meet only comes around every 5-6 years. I took advantage of it being in Minneapolis in 2011 and am SO glad I did.

I was privileged with admittance to the deck for most of the Big Ten Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships (that is when I wasn’t officiating at the HS Section 1AA Championships in Rochester). Acting as Administration Referee, I had time between my duties to watch some great races and ALL the awesome diving.

Final Meet Results and stories/Notes can be found at the MN Gopher Men’s Swimming page. They did a great job covering the meet and providing information, photos and videos!

 Meet Results at:

The University of MN’s Michael Richards repeats as winner of the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle. The first time a swimmer has done that at Big 10’s in almost 50 years! For his feat he was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Meet and made All-Big Ten!

Even though you missed the meet in person, you can watch a recap of all the action on The Big Ten Network on your local cable.

You can see some great swimming AND GREAT DIVING!

Purdue’s David Boudia won all 3 diving events. Boudia won the first diving event, 1 Meter Springboard with a score of 467.40 points, breaking his own conference and meet records from 2009 as well as the pool record at Minnesota's University Aquatic Center. He finished only 1.25 points shy of his Purdue record from 2010. It was his sixth career Big Ten championship title and the junior also opened his weekend of competition by emerging victorious in the only diving event he did not win in 2010. He bested the second-place finisher by 91.8 points.

Boudia duplicated his record-setting trifecta of Thursday by scoring 509.90 points Friday from the 3-meter board. In the process, he established a new pool record at Minnesota's University Aquatic Center and eclipsed his conference and Big Ten Championships benchmarks from 2009. Boudia won the event by 90 points and was awarded six perfect 10s and one 9.5 on the fifth dive of his list, a forward 3 1/2 somersault pike (107B).

Boudia won the platform Saturday with a Purdue-record score of 557.90 points. He also established new Big Ten conference and meet records as well as a new pool benchmark at Minnesota’s University Aquatic Center. He eclipsed his own records in all four instances.  Boudia scored five perfect 10s on his first dive of the platform finals. He received two additional 10s on his fifth dive. He capped his career at the Big Ten Championships as an eight-time conference champ.

Hey, how do you get to The Big Show anyway?

" Well, you have to finish,......."
" No, no, no, I already did that, I mean HOW do you get to the big show, as in the best way to drive there, do I have to fill out paperwork,.........?"

After Saturday’s Section 1AA Swimming & Diving Finals, two Winhawks were saying, what do we do now?

Winona High Freshman Cal Dretske and Winona Senior Co-Captain Justin Bublitz both found themselves in the enviable position of asking, “now what do I do?"  Both are first time qualifiers for the Big Show, the Minnesota State High School League Swimming & Diving Championships.

Quality swims were made many of the Winhawks, personal bests were the norm with the boys reacting well to their taper regimen.

The 200 Medley Relay Saw the team of Avery P., Cal D., Kyle S., Louie L. set their quickest time of the year in the Section prelims and then better it by a second in the Final.

In the 200 Freestyle, Erick Rico Barraza shaved 11 seconds off his previous swim in the event. Both Cotter Freshman Hodd Gorman and Winhawk Junior Joey Kleinow dropped nearly six seconds off their previous best times qualifying themselves for Saturday’s Finals.

The 200IM saw personal bests out of Alex Vaslow, Kyle Schneider and Cal Dretske whose nearly 8 second drop earned himself a return for the Consolation Final.

The 50 Freestyle hype brought out personal best performances from Alex Kline, Conor Kosidowski, Avery Prondzinski and Sr. Co-Captain Louie La Porta’s new mark in the prelims qualified him to swim again on Saturday.

Diving saw the entire contingent, all three guys dive in Prelims and Finals night. Stan Petkov and Dan Karnick both score new personal highs for 11 dive meets and Sr. Co-Captain Justin Bublitz qualifies for State placing 4th.

The 100 Butterfly saw Alex Kline’s second personal best time of the afternoon, as well as Cotter 8th Grader Kyle Schneider setting his personal bests for the eight and ninth times in this season, occurring in the Prelims and Finals respectively.

The 100 Yard Freestyle saw EVERY entrant set a new personal best time. Sr. Co-Captain Louie La Porta, Joey Kleinow and Gio Borsari all dropped from their Big 9 performances. Kory McDonald legitimized his entry into the Minute Man Club, swimming a pure sub minute 100 in meet conditions.

The 500 Freestyle saw personal bests out of Tyler Suman and Alex Miller. The biggest time drop of the Sections meet came when Cotter Freshman Hodd Gorman shaved over 15 seconds off to land himself in the Championship Final.

The 200 Freestyle Relay set two new bests at Sections. The team of
 1) Prondzinski, Avery 11 2) La Porta, Louie 12 3) Kleinow, Joey 11 4) Kline, Alex 11 set the first time. In the Finals Gio Borsari subbed for Avery (saving him for the Backstroke finals) and they set another new final.

The 100 Backstroke brought the best out of both Gio Borsari (dropping 2 Seconds) and Avery Prondzinski who’s 5 second drop landed him a spot in the Championship Final.

The 100 Breaststroke was Freshman Cal Dretske’s announcement to the Big 9 and Section 1AA Schools that he would be a force to recon with for the next few years. Personal Bests were obtained by both Conor Kosidowski and Mic Borsari.  Cal dropped 5 seconds off his prelims seed. His finish seeded him second going into the Saturday Finals. IN his Finals race Cal was 3rd at the 50 yard point, but came back stronger and won second place going away to qualify for next weekend’s State Championship!

A highlight from the session: A swim-off was required in the 50 Freestyle to determine who would be in the “B: Final, they had tied in prelims at 20.13 seconds. They competed in their swim-off and tied AGAIN at, you guessed it, 20.13 seconds. They rested for 30 minutes and swam another swim off, this time the swimmer from Purdue was the clear winner 20.11 to 20.23 and went on to swim in the evening finals. Great Drama!

Friday's prelims required two more swim offs!

Finals at 6:30 PM!

Excuse me, but are you busy Saturday afternoon?

The Winona Winhawks went into the Section 1AA Swimming & Diving Championship prelims knowing that they would be returning for the finals. There are only 8 teams in the swim meet, so barring disqualification, all relays return for Finals night. The question was who would be coming back for individual events?

Diving was a given, all 3 guys, Justin Bublitz, Stan Petkov and Dan Karnick would all be in the top 16, in fact, there were only 14 competitors so it was a lock. Justin currently sits 4th and is looking to ride that position all the way to the State Meet.

The Winhawks had a number of swimmers seeded in the range that would make a Saturday return likely. What was fun to watch is what some Winhawks did with those seeds.

Cotter Freshman Hodd Gorman had a great first Prelim swim converting his 200 Freestyle 15th seed into a Consolation Finals 9th seed by dropping nearly 6 seconds. Later in his 500 Freestyle, Hodd rode his 11th seed to its maximum. Showing everyone what a taper can really do, Hodd had the 3rd largest time drop of the event, 15. 25 seconds. Hodd gets to swim in the Championship Final Saturday as the 8th seed.

Junior Joey Kleinow was seeded 19th entering the 200 Freestyle and was going to need a quality swim to get an opportunity to swim on Saturday. Joey did just that dropping nearly 6 seconds off his seed and now owns the 13th Seed in Saturday’s Consolation Final.

Freshman Cal Dretske also had a great Prelims day for the Winhawks. His 16th seed in the 200 IM meant a good likelihood of a return trip on Saturday. Cal cemented that plan with a nearly 8 second drop and is seeded 13th for Saturday. With that confidence builder behind him, Cal came to the 100 Breaststroke. Cal already owned the 7th seed for the prelims but expectations were high. While 9 of the top 10 seeds dropped time in their prelim swims, no one dropped as much as Cal. Cal’s split in his second 50 yards (50yards to the finish) was the fastest of ALL the contestants resulting in a nearly 5 second drop and the 2nd seed ( and possible State Meet trip) going into Saturdays Final.

Sr. Co-Captain Louie LaPorta gets an extra swim Saturday. In spite of his half second drop, his 14th seed entering Prelims stood and he stands seeded 14th in the 50 Freestyle Consolation Final.

Cotter Freshman Kyle Schneider will be swimming the 100 Butterfly Saturday seeded 15th.

In the largest Winhawk leap of the meet, Junior Avery Prondzinski slipped into the water for the start of his 100 Backstroke prelim seeded 13th. After swimming the 4th fastest 50 split, Avery holds on to cut over 3 seconds off of his seed and is now swimming in the Championship Final Saturday as the 5th seed.

There were a number of other personal bests that I will write about in the meet wrap up!

It is time to have some fun and see just what you are capable of!

With the Boy’s Section 1AA Starting today, here are the latest coaches rankings for State in Class AA.

Also shown are some of the fastest times posted in the state, some Section 1AA competitors and where they fall, the Winhawks’ fastest time or score of the season posted where it falls, and the State Meet qualifying time.

Bottom line, the Winhawks are young, learning and growning, and should approach Sections as a fun meet where they can see how fast they can go to give them momentum to take into the off season.

Good luck Winhawks!

The Section 1AA Championships take place this week with Preliminaries on Thursday and Finals on Friday. Unlike Big 9 Conference where titles are more about bragging rights, here titles infer extending your season. Sections is where swimmers can qualify for the State Championships in Minneapolis the following weekend. It REALLY doesn’t matter what you have done prior to Sections, it matters what you do at Section Finals. There are two ways to qualify for the State Championships. The easiest, or maybe a more accurate description would be straightforward way to qualify is to swim to First or Second place in the Section Final. Beyond those two guaranteed spots, anyone swimming under the State qualifying standard IN the Section Final ( sorry guys, Consolation Finals doesn't cut it) ALSO gets to swim at the State Meet.  I have seen as many as 4 or 5 individuals and as many as 6 relays qualify in one event. Diving is a different matter, there are no standards, you HAVE to finish in one of the top four
spots in the results.

The Winhawks have their work cut out for them, the Section features a lot of talent.

Last year’s results:

1. Rochester Century          386
2. Northfield                         288
3. Farmington                      267
4. Hastings                          261
5. Owatonna                        240
6. Winona                            218
7. Rochester Mayo              210
8. Rochester JM                  205

Prelims on Thursday – Diving is at 11AM, Swimming starts at 3:30 PM
Finals on Saturday Swimming starts at 1:30 PM, Diving takes place during the meet after the 50 Freestyle.
