This is my blog that follows swimming & diving in Winona MN and those Winonans that have left to swim elsewhere. Occasionally I will post items of info related to swimming & diving in general.

2010 MN HS Section 1AA Girls Swimming & Diving Championships

The water has settled and another State Qualifying Sections is over. Winona qualified 6 swimmers to go to the MN State Championships by qualifying all 3 relays and two individual swims.

Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan qualified for the State Championships as an individual in the 50 and 100 Freestyle events.

The 200 Medley Relay of Sr. Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl, Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke, Freshman Reese Galewski, and Junior Foreign Exchange Student Lalita Charungchainanon qualified by beating the time standard by just over a second.

The 200 Freestyle Relay of Cotter Junior Alexandra Zuelke, Sr. Co-Captain Bridget Bawek, Freshman Haley O’Neill, and Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan qualified with their 2nd place finish which was also a second and a half under the time standard.

The 400 Freestyle Relay made up of Junior Foreign Exchange Student Lalita Charungchainanon, Sr. Co-Captain Bridget Bawek, Freshman Haley O’Neill and Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan qualified by finishing in 2nd Place as well as being nearly 4 tenths of a second under the qualifying time.

Lastly, there were 4 teams from the Section that met the level of being recognized as academic athletes and overall the Winona/Winona Cotter Swimmers & Divers were recognized as the Winner of the Section 1AA Academic Athlete Award.

To recap, Results from Preliminaries established lane assignments for Finals, but qualifying times for State have to be swum on Finals night. The top two finishers in both relays and individual events automatically advance to the State Meet. Additionally, any relay or individual that swims under the established qualifying time, whether in the Consolation Heat or the Final Heat, also advances to State.

In addition to the state qualifying, there are also points awarded for final finish in Consolation and Championship heats.

200 Medley Relay – Qualifying time 1:52.99

Winhawks Seeded 5th in 1:55.19.

The 200 Medley Relay appeared to be a major hurdle for the Winhawks. They were seeded 5th after swimming slightly under their seed time in Prelims but sliding from their prelim 4th seed. 3 teams, Faribault, JM and Owatonna had already swum times worthy of State Qualifying in prelims. As it turns out, the Winhawks swimming in Lane 2 didn’t need to be concerned with the teams around them. Sr. Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl shaved nearly 2 seconds off her prelim split, Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke was a half second faster, Freshman Reese Galewski contributed another half a second, and Junior Foreign Exchange Student Lalita Charungchainanon contributed a 4 tenths reduction herself. The end result was a 1:51.94, a 3.25 seconds improvement. The Winhawks smash their previous Fastest Winhawk Time Ever and in spite of a 6th place finish the Winhawks were going to State. In fact the event was so competitive 5 of the 6 relays advanced to the State Meet which is quite rare.

The 200 Freestyle      Qualifying time 1:57.50

The 200 Freestyle is an event in transition for the Winhawks. The only Qualifier the Winhawks had was Freshman Haley O’Neill. She has been steady all season and had swum a personal best her last two times out. Saturday night was no exception, Haley drops another 4 tenths to place 12th with a 2:05.32.

200 Individual Medley          Qualifying time 2:12.65

The 200 IM is also a Winona growth event and was a vulnerability all season. Winona’s entries were swimming together in the Consolation Heat in lanes 4 & 6. Freshman Reese Galewski was seeded 12th and Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke was seeded 9th. The opening leg is Reese’s specialty the Fly and she has the lead after 50 yards by a full second over Alexandra. The Backstroke leg allows Alex and the rest of the pack to inch closer but Reese still has the lead. Alex’s specialty is the Breaststroke and not only does she overtake Reese, but she has the fastest split over anyone by 3 seconds or more. Finishing Alex takes 9th with a time that moves her up the All Time Fastest Winhawk list to #6. Reese holds off a charging JM swimmer to take 10th moving up 2 spots from her original seed and setting a new personal best time.

50 Freestyle       Qualifying Time  24.74

The Freestyle events have been a strong suit of the Winhawks for years and this year it was the anchor again.  All four of Winona’s entries advanced to the Finals. Swimming in the Consolation Final Junior Foreign Exchange Student Lalita Charungchainanon was seeded 10th and Senior Taylor Johnson was seeded 13th. In an event that is over in less than 30 seconds, improvements come in small increments. Lalita shaves a tenth of a second off her time but stays in 10th, Taylor swims slightly higher than her seed but moves up one spot to 12th.  In the Championship Final, Sr. Co-Captain Bridget Bawek is seeded 5th and slips to 6th. Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan enters the Final seeded 2nd and while dropping 35 hundredths of a second for a 24.30 and a new personal best time. She maintains her 2nd place standing and qualifies for the State Championships by both place and time standard.

Diving                  Qualifying – Top Four place finishers

Diving consisted of the Final 3 dives of an 11 dive list started on Thursday.  The only Winhawk left in the top 16 field was Sophomore Crystal Franzwa sitting in 5th, but only one tenth of a point out of 4th and seven tenths out of 3rd. Crystal has saved her highest DD dives for Saturday in a make or break attempt to qualify for State. Leading off with her Forward 1ss with 2 twists Crystal is off on her hurdle and a little back from the front edge of the board. The lost height leaves her a little short on the dive and less than desirable scores. The set-back appeared to get in her head and she has an off night for the rest of the way. She ends up dropping off from 4th to 6th.

The 100 Yard Butterfly                   Qualification Time 1:00.03
The 100 Yard Butterfly has two Winhawks in the Championship Final. Sr. Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl is seeded 7th swimming in Lane 1 and Freshman Reese Galewski was seeded 8th swimming in Lane 8. In Prelims Reese swam far below the personal best she set at Big 9 and was looking to make amends here in the Final. Samantha could score no lower than 8th and knowing Reese would come out fast, stroked her way to a respectable 8th that was slower than her prelim time but still faster than the winning Consolation heat time. Reese came out hard tied for 4th at the 50 and slipped ever so little in the final 50 to maintain her 4th but finish 6 tenths off the State Qualifying time.

The 100 Yard Freestyle                 State Qualifying - 54.08

Back to a Freestyle Event, the Winhawks are again looking to make some hay. Again all four of their meet entries are swimming in Finals. The Consolation Final has Junior Foreign Exchange Student Lalita Charungchainanon seeded 10th and Freshman Haley O’Neill seeded 12th. Lalita swims within hundredths of her seed to remain in 10th place. Haley maintains her 12th, but the seven tenths she shaves off not only establishes a new personal best but get her on the list of top Winhawks swims of all time at #10. The Championship Final sees Senior Co-Captain Bridget Bawek seeded 7th and Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan seeded 2nd. Bridget goes out hard and is in 6th at the 50. She gives a little ground but still finishes in 7th. MacKenzie make the 50 turn in 1st place but fades ever so slightly and the swimmer over in Lane 2 comes from behind leaving MacKenzie where she started in 2nd place and qualified for State with a 53.04.

The 200 Yard Freestyle Relay      State Qualifying 1:41.64

The Winhawks entered the event seeded 5th after an uneventful prelim. Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke leads off and 2nd – 7th are separated by 7 tenths at the exchange. Senior Co-Captain Bridget Bawek swims the fastest 2nd leg in the field and the Winhawks move up to 2nd place. Freshman Haley O’Neill swims her fastest split ever and yet the Winhawks give up ground dropping to 3rd. Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan takes to the water and swims an out of her mind 23.65 split. It is a personal best for Kenzie and the fastest spilt for the entire relay of 28 swimmers.   The Winhawks end up 2nd in a blazing field where 5 of the 7 relays beat the time standard and qualify for State.

The 100 Yard Backstroke              State Qualifying - 1:00.84

The 100 Backstroke sees the Winhawks represented by both the Future and the present. Swimming in the Consolation Final is Cotter 7th Grader Morgan Whyte. She is one of only two 7th Graders swimming in the Finals Saturday night. Morgan defends her 14th seed swimming just off her seed time but looking to the future with great promise! In the Championship Final is Senior Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl. Sam qualified 7th in Thursday’s prelims and swimming a personal best time in the process. Swimming out in Lane 1 Sam ends up in a dead tie for 7th with the swimmer on the opposite side of the pool in Lane 8.

The 100 Yard Breaststroke  State Qualifying 1:09.29

IN the 100 Breaststroke another Winhawk was set to wrap up her career. Senior Taylor Johnson was seeded 11th and looking to shed some seconds just one last time. She swam a solid race sticking with the leaders early and hanging on in the end to swim a new personal best and move up from #10 to #7 on the All Time Fastest Winhawk list! Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke was seeded 4th in the Championship Final. Alexandra’s season has been a rough road loosing a month of water training in the middle of the season. That meant that the last month of the season was an even bigger battle than usual. The weight of the constant comeback season may have finally had an effect as Alex was a little off her game. She couldn’t match the personal best she set in the prelims and dropped seven tenths of a second to take 5th.

The 400 Freestyle Relay               State Qualifying – 3:41.59

The Winhawks entered the 400 Freestyle Relay seeded 3rd just as they had been seeded in the Prelims. They had to either leapfrog the 2nd Seeded Faribault relay or drop nearly 4 seconds to meet the State Qualifying time. Junior Foreign Exchange Student Lalita Charungchainanon gets the Winhawks off on the right foot still in 3rd at the 50 but pulling ahead into 2nd by the time she was back at the blocks again. Senior Co-Captain Bridget Bawek took the lead and made the most of it. She swam a personal best split which ended up being the 6th fastest of all 28 splits and handed freshman Haley O’Neill an even bigger lead. Haley seized onto the theme and she too swam her best 100 split ever by a half second. When Haley reached the blocks, Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan could taste another State qualifying opportunity. Kenzie swims out in a blazing 24.46 first 50 and finishes up with a 52.32 which is not only the fastest of the field but she make it 4 for 4 in swimming personal best splits in the relay. The Winhawks finish in 2nd place guaranteeing the 3rd relay makes a state trip but also beat the State Qualifying time and moved themselves up the All Time Fastest Winhawk list from 4th to 3rd.
