This is my blog that follows swimming & diving in Winona MN and those Winonans that have left to swim elsewhere. Occasionally I will post items of info related to swimming & diving in general.

2010 Girls' HS State Swimming Prelims

Winona’s State Team contingent almost made it through prelims intact. The 200 Medley Relay, the 200 Free Relay and both MacKenzie Brosnahan’s freestyle swims (50 & 100) will advance to Saturday evening’s finals.

It was a quick night at Class AA Prelims with 4 new Class AA All time records set by two swimmers. Abby Duncan, Champlin Park, in the 200 Individual Medley & 100 Breaststroke and Rachel Bootsma, Eden Prairie, in the 100 Butterfly & 100 Backstroke

Winhawk results

The 200 Medley Relay led off the Meet seeded 16th. The Winhawks would have to maintain or better their seed to be able to return for the Finals. They did just that although there was some seed shuffling. Winona was seeded behind Big 9 foes Rochester Century and Owatonna as a result of their Section 1 finishes. In spite of finishing a second off their Sections seed time, they leapfrog both Century and Owatonna to make the return trip to swim in Saturday’s Consolation Finals.

Seed Final

3) Reese Galewski 9 4) Lalita Charungchainanon 11
28.62 31.47 26.97 25.87

Next up was MacKenzie Brosnahan in her 50 Freestyle race. MacKenzie was seeded 8th but having saved her taper, shaving and racing suit for State, was looking to move up. Swimming out of the 2nd heat in Lane 3 MacKenzie gets a great start and hits the wall first at 25 yards. She hangs on and wins her heat besting not only the top seed next to her in Lane 4 but also Rochester JM’s Schumacher in Lane 4 that had bested MacKenzie at Sections. MacKenzie ends up moving up two spots and is seeded 6th for the Championship Finals Saturday night out of Lane 7.

After a break where diving would normally be, MacKenzie was back at it in the 100 Freestyle. Here she was seeded 11th and definitely looking to improve that to make the Championship Final. MacKenzie swims in Lane 6 in the 2nd of 3 heats. MacKenzie turns the 50 in 3rd quickest and finishes 3rd in her heat improving her seed time from 53.04 to 52.78. MacKenzie has to sweat the running of the 3rd heat to see where she will fall. Again MacKenzie’s time bests her Roch JM nemesis from Sections and she moves all the way up to 7th and again gets to swim in the Saturday Evening Championship Final.

The 200 Freestyle Relay hits the water seeded 11th which looks to also make the jump to Saturday night. The Winhawks swim a hair off their Section Seed time and end up 14th swimming in the Consolation Final Saturday night. Roch JM was a little off their game and drop from their 7th seed all the way to 12th. Saturday night they will be swimming in the Consolation Final right next to our Winhawks in a rematch of the Section Final.

The 400 Freestyle Relay had their work cut out for them. Seeded 20th, they would really need to dig deep to make the leap to Saturday. In spite of jumping over Rosemount, Mounds View and Burnsville, the Winhawks come up 1 second short and finish 17th and missing the Saturday Finals.

Saturday’s Class AA Finals will be swum at 6PM at the U of MN Aquatic Center. The Class A finals will precede it at Noon. Saturday’s finals will include the conclusion of the Diving competition. Having dove their preliminaries on Thursday, the divers will be looking to add to their teams’ point totals.

Team wise it appears that Edina may very well unseat Stillwater and prevent them from the three-peat. Wayzata is also looking strong and may factor in but maybe as a spoiler along with Eden Prairie.
