This is my blog that follows swimming & diving in Winona MN and those Winonans that have left to swim elsewhere. Occasionally I will post items of info related to swimming & diving in general.

The First Day of the USA Swimming Grand Prix is in the books.

In spite of Michael Phelps scratching the day before the meet, there were
plenty of stars in the water including some of our own Winona Alumni.

In a display of young and old, the Women’s 200 Freestyle was won by 15 year old
USA National Teamer Missy Franklin in 1:43.70. Second was 32 year old Erika
Erndl in 1:46.30, 3rd was also 15 year old Lia Neal and in 4th was Olympic Open
Water medalist Chloe Sutton.

By contrast the Men’s 200 Freestyle was all age/experience as Former Texas
Star and Olympic Gold medal winner in the 800 Free Relay Ricky Behrens
wins followed by former Foreign Olympians Oussama Mellouli (Tunisia) and
Simon Burnett (Great Britain).

The Women’s 100 Breaststroke sees the U of MN go 1-2 when Gopher Jillian Tyler, rips off a 58.22 and U of MN teammate Haley Spencer follows her in 1:00.35.

The Men’s 100 Breaststroke had another international affair as Michael Alexandrov, the Bugarian Olympian who swam for Northwestern wins in 52.13, an Irishman ( as in Dublin, he swam for Tennessee) placed 2nd and US Olympian Ryan Lochte placed 3rd.

The Women’s 100 Butterfly was won by two time Olympic silver medalist US National Teamer Christine Magnuson.

The Men’s 100 Butterfly saw US Olympian Ricky Behrens get his second win of the night followed in 2nd place by fellow US Olympic star Ryan Lochte.

The Women’s 400 IM was the second win of the evening by USA National Teamer Missy Franklin.

The Men’s 400 IM was won by the Tunisian Olympian Oussama Mellouli followed by former Indiana University Standout Todd Patrick and former Florida Gator Rex Tullius.

The 400 Free Relays were dominated by the University of MN with both the Women and Men taking 1st and 3rd. If you were there or watching on Swimnetwork.com, you got to see Winona’s own Matt Papenfuss on the podium getting a medal as part of the 3rd place Gopher “B” Relay.

Winona Alumni Matt Papenfuss and Abbey Staats results for the day.
