On Saturday AM, Matt Papenfuss was in the water swimming the 50 FR prelim as well as the 500 Prelim.
Matt was seeded with a 20.79 in the 50 FR and ended up swimming a 21.37 in Prelims, placing him with the fastest seed in the "C" Final Saturday Evening.
Shortly thereafter, he swam his 500 Freestyle prelim. He swam his race in a 4:40.96 placing him in that "C" final as well.
It is a very competitive field at the Speedo Champions Meet and a very interesting one. Swimmers are from all over the Midwest and the races are Open" classes meaning any age. While I was scanning the 50 FR results I did a double take. One of the swimmers in the 50 FR "B" Finals is 38years old? I had to look into it and it turns out he was a member of the Russian Olympic Team back in 1992. He is now a coach in Illinois that still swims Masters events and the odd Open Class USA Meet apparently. I did not pick up on it in the psyc sheet, but it appears he swam in the same prelim heat as Matt did. I wonder what Matt thought as he looked over and saw a guy a little over twice his age on the blocks? Then finished behind him. Should add a little more motivation to the training maybe?
This is my blog that follows swimming & diving in Winona MN and those Winonans that have left to swim elsewhere. Occasionally I will post items of info related to swimming & diving in general.
