This week in swimming

Today marked the first day of official practice for the Winona/Winona Cotter Boys Swimming & Diving season. Their first dual meet is Thursday December 16th at Albert Lea. I will post more on the team and a preseason report later on.

This Saturday, the YMCA Winfins travel to Austin to compete against the Aqua Pack.

LOTS OF COLLEGE SWIMMING THIS WEEKEND.

St. Mary’s University will be competing at Hamline on Friday night and then at the Concordia Triangular with Concordia, and Hamline on Saturday.

The # 12 ranked University of Minnesota Men’s Swimming & Diving Team is traveling to compete in the Georgia Invitational. Other teams competing will be # 11 Virginia, #7 Auburn, Kansas, and fellow Big 10 member Penn State (ranked just outside the Top 25). It is a 3 day meet (Fri – Sun with morning and evening sessions. I will try to report on progress. Considering the teams that are entered, it should be a great test of where the Gophers are at in their conditioning.

The # 14 ranked University of Minnesota Women’s Swimming & Divng Team is training until after the Christmas holiday. Although some of the women’s team members will be in Ohio this weekend competing in the USA Swimming 2010 AT&T SHORT COURSE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS at The Ohio State University in Columbus. Gophers Ashley Steenvoorden (competing in the 500 Free, 200 Free, 1650 Free, and 500 Free, Megan Braun (50 Free, 100 Fly, and 200 Fly) and Jillian Tyler (100 Breast, 200 Breast) will be there.

With the Gophers out of town UW River Falls will host the  Falcon Invitational at the U of MN Aquatic Center. Mankato, St. Cloud, Eau Claire, La Crosse, and a host of other squads will be in attendance.

The Iowa Invite will be this weekend in Iowa City. The University of Iowa will host Denver, Notre Dame, South Dakota State, Green Bay, and Milwaukee. Ohio State will be competing in diving only. The meet is a morning prelims evening finals format.

St. Thomas will be hosting the St. Thomas Invite in St. Paul on Saturday and Sunday.

UW Whitewater and UW Stevens Point will be at the Wheaton Invite.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also swimming in this weekend’s USA Swimming 2010 AT&T SHORT COURSE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS from Minnesota this weekend will be Rachel Bootsma just off her National HS Record performance at the MN State HS Championships. She is swimming for her Aquajets squad in the 200IM, 50 Free, 100 Fly, 100 Back, 100 Free, and 200 Fly.  Adding some drama to the meet she will be competing in the 100 Back directly against Cindy Tran, the California swimmer that she took the National Title away from. Several additional swimmers from MN will be in attendance from the Edina, Minnetonka, and Foxjet squads. Many other names will be in attendance like Ryan Lochte, Matt Grevers, Nathan Adrian, Julia Smit, Elaine Breeden, Missy Franklin, Jessica Hardy, and many others.

Winona Water Wizards swim hard at Hastings Invite

The Winona Water Wizards were in Hastings last Sunday competing in the 19th Annual Hastings Invite.

Attending for the Water Wizards were:

Brianna Beseler,  Alexa Lofgren , Tanner Lozenski, MaKenna Vetsch, Grant Wolner, and Griffin Wolner .

Leading off the day’s events, Tanner Lozenski Grant Wolner, Alexa Lofgren, and Griffin Wolner swam a Mixed 12 & Under 200 Free Relay to get their competitive juices flowing.

Tanner Lozinski lead off the relay. It was the first 50 Free he has swam since last summer. Swimming lead-off agreed with him and he swam his best 50 Free ever shaving a second and a half off of his previous best. He also competed in the 100 Freestyle where he finished 1st in his group swimming a very low “C” time.

Alexa Lofgren set personal best times in two of her events. She finished nearly a full second faster in her 100 Breaststroke and shaved off 13 hundredths in her 100 Freestyle.

MaKenna Vetsch swam in her first ever USA Swimming meet. She swam a “C” time 50 Butterfly and in her first time out in a 100 Freestyle just missed a “B” time by under a half a second!

Grant Wolner continues to flex his muscles in the pool following his brother’s 8 and Under winning ways. Grant finished 1st in the 8 & Under 50 Breaststroke shaving off just over 6 seconds from his previous best on his way to swimming a Champ Time! Grant also dropped a second and a quarter off of his 100 Freestyle time to swim a very low “A” time!

Griffin Wolner also continues to improve after aging up this year. His 50 Breast stroke was a solid “B” time. He shaved a full second off of his 50 Fly best time and he dropped four and a quarter seconds off of his 200 Freestyle time for a new personal best and another good “B” time.

Biggest kudos of the day go to Brianna Beseler setting personal bests in all 3 of her events which were all very strong “B” times. Brianna led off the day swimming the 100 Breaststroke in a personal best 1:31.45.  She followed that with a 100 Freestyle that was a 5 ½ second improvement on her best. Brianna saved the best for last swimming the 500 Freestyle and improving over 33 seconds on her last year’s time. Her 6:50.24 is a very good “B" time as well.

Next up for the Wizards is an “A” meet in the Twin Cities, the Barracuda Aquatics Club’s Holiday Classic “A” Swim Meet. The rest of the club will work out through the holidays and swim on January 8th at the A/B/C meet in Red Wing.

Winhawk End of Year Awards Celebration

The Winona Winhawk Girls Swimming & Diving Team had their End-Of-Year awards celebration this evening. Certificates of participation were handed out along with scholastic achievement certificates and varsity letters to those that met lettering standards.

Yes, I believe the Parents do enjoy the stories about each of the swimmers & divers and appreciate hearing about some of the antics that go on at practice and meets.

There was a great deal of maturing on the Winhawks this year. The older girls recognized the responsibilities intrinsic to their tenure, accepted it and took the team forward. As a result, many of the younger swimmers got stronger, gained confidence, perhaps learned more about what they were capable of, and formed new or strengthened the bonds that makes them teammates.

As Coach Burt pointed out when talking about the 200 Medley Relay girls and their team record, it takes 4 of them to succeed at that level. Individual performance can carry you only so far. When you start swimming for your teammates as much as you are swimming for yourself, you come to realize what life is about. You console together, you celebrate together, but in the end, teamwork toward a positive goal is what matters.

Congratulations to Sam & Kayla Berg, Winhawk Captains for 2011.  Remember the path laid for you by the Captains before you and the slide show you watched tonight. After all the dual meets, invitationals and the big end of season meets are done, what you'll reflect back on will be the memories of what happened along the way, in the pool of course but a good deal of it of the pool too.

Lastly, thanks for the card, it touched me very much. You girls work hard and deserve recognition for the work and sacrifice. It's been a pleasure watching you grow as a team and being able to tell others about your accomplishments.

Winhawks move up at 2010 Girls State Class AA Championships

As with all but the top few schools, Winona left the Championships thinking about what could have been. Considering what they had accomplished this year, and compared to some of their peers, their performance at the State Championships leave them a lot to be proud of.

The Winhawks repeated last years’ improvement on their Sections result. At Sections, Winona finished in 5th place behind JM, Farmington, Century and Faribault, with Owatonna a close 6th. Once the water had calmed at the 2010 State Championships, Winona leapfrogs Faribault and Century to place 20th and Owatonna isn't swimming after the prelims are completed.  It was amazing to see that after Rochester JM so thoroughly dominated Sections, they could only move up one spot in the final standings between 2009 & 2010. It's not that their team did not swim well at State, JM had an entry in every event Saturday night except the 200IM and the 100 Breaststroke. It is just that those top 5 teams at State are so dominant themselves.

25. Faribault                               25
37. Rochester Mayo                     2

Winona moved up in score on the continuing improvement of Winona Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan and the strength of the other six girls, Senior Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl, Freshman Reese Galewski Junior Lalita Charungchainanon, Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke, Sr. Co-Captain Bridget Bawek, and Freshman Haley O’Neill making up the 200 Medley and the 200 Freestyle relays and their making it to Finals night.

Recap

The Winhawks swam first in the Consolation Heat of the 200 Medley Relay. The Relay of Sr. Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl, Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke, Freshman Reese Galewski, and Junior Foreign Exchange Student Lalita Charungchainanon were seeded 8th and swimming in Lane 8. The girls were in the race the entire way, all 8 teams finished within a body length of each other. In the end 4 teams bettered their time and 4 teams slipped a little. The Winhawks were seeded 16th coming into the State Championships, seeded 16th coming into the State Finals and ended up taking home the points for 16th place. The Winhawks can take comfort in knowing that they leapfrogged over Rochester Century and Owatonna who, qualifying ahead of them at Sections, were listed as the alternates for the relay in 17th and 18th place respectively.

Winona Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan was up next in the Finals of the 50 Freestyle. Swimming as the 6th seed out of Lane 7, Kenzie was in the thick of the pack at the turn. At the touch pad Kenzie is just out touched where 5th ,6th ,& 7th were separated by 7 one hundredths of a second. In prelims MacKenzie solidified her hold on the 2nd fastest Winhawk 50 Free ever with a 24.11. Tonight she and the others in 5 – 8th place are a hair off their prelim times and Kenzie finishes 7th.

After the Diving which I must interject was AWESOME, came the Winhawks next Finals appearance, Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan in the 100 Freestyle. Kenzie was seeded 7th after lowering her Section seed time from 53.04 to 52.78. MacKenzie was a hair out of 5th at the 50 split and faded going into the last 15 yards slipping back to 7th just as she started. MacKenzie’s 52.78 lowered her time while already holding the 3rd fastest Winhawk 100 Free of all time that she obtained at Sections.

Last up for the Winhawks was the Relay team of Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke leads off followed by Senior Co-Captain Bridget Bawek, Freshman Haley O’Neill and anchored by Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan. Four 50 freestyles means tenths of seconds add up to multiple places up or down. The Winhawks enter  the event seeded 14th. With their Section 1 Friends/Foes Rochester JM in Lane 6 next to them, the Winhawks are aided by Haley O’Neil’s fastest 50 split ever and they better their hold on the 4th fastest Winhawk 200 Free Relay ever. The 1:40.10 moves them up into 13th place.

The Winhawks complete a very successful season. The six swimmers that qualified for State are also responsible for 18 new entries on the All Time Fastest Winhawk swims list. A new entry or move up the list was accomplished in every stroke and relay the Winhawks swim. The 2010 Winhawks finished the dual meet season at 7-3. They defeated Faribault in a dual meet for the first time in 18 years, they were 3rd at the Big 9 Conference Meet, 5th at the Section 1AA meet and as stated earlier, the Winhawks finish their 2010 season in 20th place at the MSHSL Class AA Championships.
