This is my blog that follows swimming & diving in Winona MN and those Winonans that have left to swim elsewhere. Occasionally I will post items of info related to swimming & diving in general.

How do you spell FUN?

W-I-N-H-A-W-K-S Girls Swimming & Diving

Thursday night’s border battle against Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas had little billing going into the meet. Only in this blog did would anyone be able to learn much about Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas.

So it wasn’t the expectation of an easy win or anything that had the Winhawks so chipper. Maybe it was because of Parents Night. Maybe they are getting a little punchy because of their schedule this week. Maybe it is that point in the season. Whatever it was, the girls were practically giddy and looked as though they were really enjoying themselves.

It wasn’t for a lack of competition, what Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas lacked in numbers they made up for in speed, pushing the Winhawks in most events.

The 200 Medley Relay should have sent a shiver through the Winhawks. The Winhawks A Relay of Senior Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl, Cotter Junior Alexandra Zuelke, Freshman Reese Galewski and Senior Co-Captain Bridget Bawek posted a 1:57 just two days prior. But their 1:59 against Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas wasn’t enough and the Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas Relay of SR Brooke Reynolds, Junior Megan Sisson, SR Stephanie Bowman, SR Emilie Klos took first place in 1:57.79.

IN the 200 Freestyle, Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas inserts one of the big guns and SR Brooke Reynolds takes Winhawk Freshman Haley O’Neill out for a ride. Haley stays with her the entire race but gets touched out by a second. Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke makes a rare Freestyle appearance and places 3rd with Cotter 7th Grader Morgan Whyte bringing home 4th in a personal best.  The middle finishes still outscore Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas and bring the score to even.

The 200 IM introduced the Winhawks to Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas Stephanie Bowman and Winhawk Coach Steve Burt counters with Cotter JUNIOR MacKenzie Brosnahan. Inspired and apparently buoyed by the jovial atmosphere, MacKenzie swims her personal best 2:21.26, improves her hold on the 6th fastest 200IM ever for a Winhawk and wins by 5 body lengths.

The 50 Freestyle lived up to its billing, Senior Co-Captain Bridget Bawek lead the charge down and back with Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas Senior Emilie Klos only feet behind her.  Junior Lalita Charungchainanon is right of their shoulders finishing a solid 3rd well ahead of the rest of the pack.

As reported pre-meet, Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas has no divers. Turns out it is not for lack of want, they just have no diving board. They work out at the La Crosse YMCA so it is not an option. Before the meet started Head coach Heather Harris lamented not having divers. And lament she should as when the diving event was staged at the Middle School the trio of So. Crystal Franzwa, Senior Lianna Hawthorne and Freshman Janelle Mueller score unopposed 1-2-3 for 13 points and the Winhawks never look back.

The 100 Butterfly meet after meet is just entertaining to watch. Winhawk Freshman Reese Galewski led wire to wire with Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas Senior Stephanie Bowman right on her shoulder. Winhawk Senior Erin Bernardy places 5th.

Winona          54        Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas                       37

The 100 Freestyle saw the Winhawks slam the door on Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas. Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan swims a solid race but Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas Senior Emilie Klos, usually a sub minute swimmer is off her game and BOTH Winhawk Junior Lalita Charungchainanon and Senior Taylor Johnson beat her to the wall for a Winhawk 1-2-3 finish!

Winona          67        Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas                       40

The 500 Freestyle was the Haley O’Neill show. The Winhawk freshman was like a machine. After her initial laps, she swims 6 straight laps in the 36’s and then kicks it down to win handily in a new personal best time. Looking pretty spirited behind the blocks, Cotter So Grace Ell takes that spirit into the water with her and she too motors to a personal best time for 4th place.

At this point in the meet the girls are at a spirited frenzy and the referees have to work to keep them quiet as they gather behind the blocks for the 200 Free Relay. The Winhawks swim that energy to a near season best win with nearly a half pool margin.  After the touch we look back down the pool and behind them is not Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas but the Winhawk B Relay of Senior Taylor Johnson, Cotter Freshman McKenna Marg and Emily Thurow, and Bluffview 7th Grader Hanna O’Neill who touch in 2nd place.

Winona          87        Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas                       50

The 100 Backstroke went as predicted with Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas Senior Brooke Reynolds who was a tough competitor. Winhawk Senior Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl follows her to the wall for 2nd place with the Cotter back strokers 7th Grader Morgan Whyte and Freshman McKenna Marg right behind her.
Winona          95        Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas                       58

The 100 Breaststroke sees Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke swim a solid race showing se is getting back into form quickly. She leads the entire race placing 1st with 10 yards to spare.  Winhawk Senior Taylor Johnson places 3rd.

Winona          95        Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas           71

The 400 Freestyle Relay saw the Winhawks girls worked up into pa frenzy and Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas pretty much out of gas. Although they were swimming exhibition and did not need the points, Head Coach Steve Burt loads the two relays and they finish 1-2 in front of Onalaska/Holmen/Aquinas. The A Relay of Freshman Haley O’Neill, Reese Galewski, Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan, and Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke swim a carefree 3:54.89 the second fastest 4x100 of the season. Not to be outdone and having just as much fun,  the Winhawk B Relay of Senior Co-Captain Bridget Bawek, Junior Lalita Charungchainanon, Senior Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl, and Cotter 7th Grader Morgan Whyte swim to 2nd place in 4:00.26.
