This is my blog that follows swimming & diving in Winona MN and those Winonans that have left to swim elsewhere. Occasionally I will post items of info related to swimming & diving in general.

Swimming this week in Winona and beyond

Last Weekend the Winona Swim Club had their first swim meet of the year, the 2010 MN HASA October Monster Splash ABC Open in Hudson Wisconsin. Winona was well represented, the swimmers that went came out stroking hard and bettered times in 12 events.

Big swims included:

Brianna Beseler dropped over 11 seconds in her 200 Freestyle for a solid B Time.

Tanner Lozenski dropped over 8 seconds on his 100 Freestyle and swam the 100 Butterfly for the first time securing a B Time for future seedings in both events!

Grant Wolner came ready to make his mark. He swam a Champ time in his 50 Freestyle dropping 2 full seconds. He dropped 11 ½ seconds in his 50 backstroke just missing a champ time and also dropped 12+ seconds on his 100IM for his second Champ time of the day!

Griffin Wolner aged up this year and came out determined to remain competitive. He dropped 8 seconds on his 100 IM to obtain a B seeding for his next meet. Ditto on the B time for his 50 Backstroke and 50 Freestyle.

Well done Wizards – Next up, Northfield

College Swimming

This weekend, if you have Friday afternoon and evening free, head to the Aquatic Center at the University of MN. The Minnesota Gophers are hosting a “Pack the Pool” party for their Mens & Womens meets with Wisconsin. Admission is free. The first 200 fans will receive free Gopher swimming and diving t-shirts, and fans will have the opportunity to win other prizes throughout the meet.

Stay over for Saturday and watch St. Mary’s University at St. Thomas for the Tommie Relays.

St. Cloud State will be swimming at UW Stevens Point against the Pointers AND UW Eau Claire in a meeting of the former Winona swimmers SR. Alyssa Trainer (Bluegold) and FR. Aimee Peterson (Huskies)

There are a host of other colleges in action and I will post scores after they are done.

Lastly,

The Winona Winhawks have the Big 9 Conference Championships this week.
Kicking things off is the JV Championships in Owatonna Thursday night. The Winhawk JV is 8-2 in dual meets and looks to score well against their Big 9 rivals. The squad has shown much more depth than the majority of the other conference teams. This is always a great meet with the girls having fun and swimming well supported by a number of the Varsity swimmers who tag along to cheer them on. Naturally, a big plus is we get to watch DIVING!

Saturday, the Varsity jumps into the pool in Rochester for Varsity Big 9. Always an electrifying meet, the result scan be unpredictable as many races are based on who is tapering for Conference, Sections or State. Everyone will be gunning for Rochester JM. I suspect JM will be saving themselves for Sections and possibly looking beyond Sections at finishing higher at State. With State still 3 ½ weeks away, there will be tired swimmers and fresh tapered swimmers in the pool on Saturday. It is an exciting day that INCLUDES DIVING. I’ll be there, so should you!
