This is my blog that follows swimming & diving in Winona MN and those Winonans that have left to swim elsewhere. Occasionally I will post items of info related to swimming & diving in general.

Winhawk Varsity heads to Big 9

The Winona Winhawk Girl's Swimming Team heads to Albert Lea Saturday to contest the Big 9 Championship.

Swimming is an odd team sport. Unlike many other sports, the dual season meet part of the season doesn't mean a lot, for a number of reasons.

1) Regardless of your dual meet record, your team gets to swim in the Conference meet.

2) Team results in Conference have little effect on Sections.

3) Sections Championships are everything. They determine whether you get to swim at state. You either place high enough in an event’s finishing results or by swimming the required time standard.

As such, Conference is a stepping stone, and a different one for different teams and swimmers.

Swimmers taper at the end of the season. A taper is "the reduction of workload during a period immediately prior to a major competition." During the first three weeks of a taper (according to studies) changes that occurred were "increases in power, neuromuscular efficiency, anaerobic contribution of the swim, fast twitch muscle recruitment, and mechanical efficiency."

For different swimmers, their major competition may be Conference, it may be Sections, and it may be State. Why is explained by the opportunities to swim in the post season. There are limits on the number of entries allowed in meets. In duals it is based on the number of lanes in the pool. For championship meets, teams are limited to four individual entries per event and one per relay. With a large squad, they may not be able to swim everyone at Sections, so for some of their swimmers, their last meet would be Conference. As such they would be tapered or rested, probably even shaved (Shaving down has been a long-time companion of the taper. Shaving down for a swim meet is for gaining an advantage of a few tenths of a second. Just what does shaving body hair do? Shaving results in faster swims independent of training. The advantages of shaving are related to a decrease in drag to be overcome by a swimmer. The final result is that less power application in the pull pattern is required to overcome that drag.). Yes, I believe some of the girls have not shaved their legs for a month or two.

So some swimmers will be tapered for Conference. Possibly skewing the results of who really is faster.

Also, our conference has both Class A and Class AA teams as members. So at Sections and State they are held to different standards, yet at Conference they are all swimming to one standard, best time.

Conference is a fun meet, there are rivalries, they are the same swimmers that they raced against earlier in the season in dual meets, and maybe mostly, it is about bragging rights.

And what swimmer doesn't like that!

Winona JV Does well at Big 9.

The Winona Winhawks Girls' Swimming Team took their JV swimmers to Owatonna to strut their stuff and they did just that. Typically overshadowed by the varsity events in the dual meets, this was the JV swimmers chance to shine.

When I get the official results I will be able to elaborate on the relays, the contestants and their splits.

Notable performances included:

8th gr. Razil Campbell and FR Sami Johnson went into the 200IM seeded 5 & 6 respectively. They were in lanes 3 & 4, started side-by-side and stayed that way through out the entire race. They pushed each other to where they both shaved 4+ seconds off their seed times. Razil ended up touching out Sami but more importantly they moved up to finish 3-4 in the event.

In the 50FR the Winhawks had their highest contingent of swimmers, as did most of the teams. Winhawk SO Katie Taylor swam neck and neck with a Faribault swimmer the entire way and managed to touch her out shaving nearly 3 seconds off her seed time. Elizabeth Stretcher and 7th gr Sarah Hunsicker both improved on the seed times in the next heat. 8th grader Morgan Crowson had a big race in the 8th heat. Bettering her seed time by 1.3 second that deep in the event meant she moved up 7 places in the final standings. In eth second to last heat, SR. Denni Cisewski, FR Ashlen Haines, & FR Emily Krause were seeded 7th, 9th& 10th respectively. They finished 1-2-3 in their heat and Denni & Ashlen moved up to 4th & 5th place overall.

In Diving Megan Seely finished 5th overall with a four dive program that included a Forward 1ss ½ tw that went for 3’s and a 3.5, an Inward dive pike that scored 3.5 and 4’s, a well performed Inward 1ss tuck that went for straight 5’s, and a Forward 1 ½ ss tuck that netted 4.5’s and a 5.

In the 100FL FR Sami Johnson swam her seed time and picked up a solid second place.

The 100 FR saw SO Katie Taylor, 7th Gr Sarah Hunsicker and Elizabeth Strecher all in the initial heat together and ALL saw significant drops from their seed times! FR Samantha Berg cut 5+ seconds off her seed time and moved up a full 4 places in the standings. SO Kayla Berg was the 19th seed swimming in the 5th heat. She dropped 3 full seconds and moved from 19th to 6th overall!

In the 200Fr Relay the Winona C relay was seeded 16th. The other two were seeded 1st & 5th. In the end, they finished 3-4-5, with the ”C” relay moving up 11 spots!

The 100BK had FR Emily Krause seeded 4th and swimming her seed time to bring home a 3rd place!

The 100BR had Greer Kosidowski and Razil Campbell seeded 2nd & 5th respectively and that is exactly how they finished.

All in all it was a very exciting and enjoyable meet. When I get more details and scores I will pass them on.

Tonight the Winona Winhawk Swimmers with compete at the Big 9 Conference JV Meet

The Winhawk JV’ers travel to Owatonna to swim at the Middle School Pool.. The Winhawk JV’ers have been highly competitive all season long, undefeated according to my records. Perhaps because the Winhawls' opponents keep throwing everything they can at the Varsity, but even the Big 9 heaveyweight Rochester JM Rockets did not have the numbers to keep up to the Winhawk JV'ers resulting in a 93-33 victory. They are a strong group of swimmers looking to move up to Varsity in the upcoming seasons.

The Best Seat in the House - Tips from a referee

One of the highest potential places for a swimmer to disqualify themselves can be the turns in Breaststroke and Butterfly. Why you ask? The word simultaneous is used in the rule defining a legal turn. Swimmers are required to touch the wall with both hands simultaneously; at, above or below the surface of the water. The High School rule book adds in the clarification that they do not have to be in the same plane. That means one hand could be above the water, one could be under the water. The important part is that both hands must touch the wall at the same time.

Many young swimmers start out grabbing the wall to make their turn. As they age, some start trying to touch with one hand and grab with the other hand. Swimmers also start trying to execute their turns faster. Both these gradual changes to the wall touch can lead to a poor or misinterpreted wall touch.

Speed aside, I would stress that swimmers accentuate the obviousness of their two handed touch to avoid the appearance of an asynchronous touch and the subsequent disqualification.

Local results from the YMCA National Virtual Meet

For a YMCA meet, while there is competition between the kids, it is easiest for me to put performances in relation to time standards. USA Swimming has time standards by age group. The standards are grouped into categories from quickest, Zone, to Champ (CH), A, B, & lastly C.

In the Girls 10 & Under 100 Yard IM Lauren Whyte, Natalie Marg, Morgan Drazkowski, and Sarah Broghammer all swam solid C times. Returning swimmer Carina Dretske won the event swimming very nearly a B time.

The Boys 10 & Under 100 Yard IM saw Andrew Arnold swim a good C time at 1:49.11.

Weekend Swimming activity for Winona

This Saturday sees the Saint Mary's Men's & Women's swim teams head off to the Twin Cities for the Augsburg Pentathalon being held at St. Catherine's Butler Center Pool, St. Paul, Minn, there is an 11AM start.

Saturday also kicks off the Winona YMCA Winfins season with a YMCA National Virtual meet at the WSHS pool at noon. YMCAs from all over the country will be swimming that day and all of their results will be "pooled" to derive results as if they had been swimming against each other. Much like the SWIMS database used in the USA Swimming program, the pooled database will allow YMCA swimmers to see where they stack up against other YMCA swimmers around the country.

The Winona YMCA Winfins are another great feeder program for the WSHS Team and they are sporting a roster of 50 plus kids for their winter session.

This will be the first of 3 home meets and a total of 9 meets for the Winfin season, culminating with the State Meet in February and the MYAS Regional Meet in March, both held at the Univ of MN Aquatic Center.

Winhawks pursue Rochester John Marshall up and down the pool giving it their all.

The John Marshall juggernaut rolled into Winona for the last dual meet of the season and Parents night for the Winhawk swimmers. If you get anything out of swimming against the best, it is that it generates standout performances from your swimmers trying to rise to the challenge. Thursday night was no exception.

The first event the 200 Medley Relay saw the Winhawks swim just 0.16 off their best of eth season, yet touch second to JM by over 5.5 seconds.

The 200FR saw JM score a 1-2-3 finish with SO Olivia Staats leading all the Winhawks. 8th grader Haley O’Neil was right behind her swimming a season’s best 2:12.70, shaving over 2 ½ seconds.

The 200IM had some great drama associated with it. IN the JV Mallory Porter continues to build prepare for conference and sections swimming another season best. The varsity event saw a close race wire to wire between the future stars of both teams. Winhawk FR Alexandra Zuelke swam side-by-side with the FR and So from JM with Alex finishing third by a touch.

The 50FR also saw more gutsy performances trying to keep pace with the Rockets. Winhawk SO MacKenzie Brosnahan did the quick dip for the first time in awhile and swam, not only her season best at 25.39 but improved her hold on the 6th fastest Winhawk 50 ever. Not to be outdone, JR Bridget Bawek improved her best 50 of the year as well and touched out JM’s Aksamit by 0.07 seconds.

Diving saw the younger Winhawks make a run at the Rockets and make a statement about what may be to come. Taking on JM’s Megan Lawson, who finished 13th at last year’s State AA meet, Winhawk FR grader Crystal Franswa finished in second just 15 points behind.

The 100FL was full of high points as well. In the JV event, FR Samantha Johnson did her first competitive fly and won the event in a debut 1:24.36.The Varsity Event saw JR Sam Quandahl and 8th gr Reese Galewski finish 3-4.

The 100FR was a high point for the Winhawks as usual. JM took first but Winhawks MacKenzie Brosnahan, Bridget Bawek and Haley O’Neil scored 2-3-4 with MacKenzie swimming a season best 55.08.

The 500FR turned out as predicted with JM dominating, as two of their girls’ swam 5:35’s. SR Co-Captain Aimee Peterson swam an excellent season best 6:02.58 trying to take away third place from JM.

The 200FR Relay saw the Winhawks chasing the Rockets and swimming a season best 1:45.50 which ranks No. 6 on the all time Winona times list.

The 100BK saw SO Olivia Staats swim just 0.02 sec off her season best.

The 100BR seems to be a never ending test for Winhawk FR Alexandra Zuelke. Meet after meet she is in a four length neck and neck sprint and Thursday was no different. This time she came away victorious with a 0.2 second win.

The 400FR Relay was another test of the Winhawk’s metal, and the team of Bridget Bawek, Olivia Staats, MacKenzie Brosnahan and Alexandra Zuelke responded by swimming another season’s best time of 3:51.95.
Final Score

Rochester John Marshall storms into town.

Rochester JM has shaped up to be the première force in the Big 9 dominating duals and the Section 1AA True Team. They will come to Winona looking to end the dual meet season undefeated in duals as everyone prepares for the Big 9 meet. Winona could deflate their balloon if they swim well.
The JM Medley relay looks to repeat their appearance at last year’s State Meet. Winona’s team of JR. Samantha Quandahl, FR. Alexandra Zuelke, and 8th graders, Reece Galewski and Haley O’Neil can push them and possibly steal the win.
The 200FR could be the race of the night if the Winhawks send SO MacKenzie Brosnahan to the blocks. She can take JM’s Ricard and Aksamit avenging a True Team loss.
The 200IM will be JMs to 1-2. Winhawk FR Alexandra Zuelke could be the one to break up a JM sweep.
The 50FR will be fast as well and Winhawk JR Bridget Bawek will need to be on her game to place in the top three.
Being a really well rounded team means diving is also covered by JM including a state meet performer. Winona’s Crystal Franswa has a chance to really show how far she has progressed this year as we near Conference and Sections.
The 100FL will require JR Samantha Quandahl to swim her time of the season.
The 100FR will require another marquee swim by Winhawk SO MacKenzie Brosnahan to prevent a JM 1-2-3 finish.
If Roch produces anything, they manufacture distance swimmers. JM has three girls that swim sub 6 minute 500’s. Who to counter this assault with will be Coach Burt’s big decision of the night.
Winona’s 200FR Relay team is undefeated in Dual meets through 10/13 and this will be their big test of the reason prior to Conference and Sections. Winhawks Bridget B., Olivia S., MacKenzie B., and Alexandra Z will have to swim the relay of the season to stay unbeaten.
The 100BK could be a big event for the Winhawks depending on who is left to race. Look to SO Olivia Staats to step up and score points for Winona.
The 100BR is also a scoring opportunity for Winona. FR Alexandra Zuelke should bring home a solid win and if Taylor Johnson is felling better, a possible second.
Both “A” and “B” 400FR Relay teams of JM are just plain quick. Winona’s “A” relay will need to have a good race to prevent a JM 1-2.

Winhawks fall to Faribault

On Tuesday the WInona Winhawks traveled to Faribault to take on the formidable Falcons. Just to see them in the pool, they look like girls on a mission. Last year their string of 13 straight Big 9 Championships was broken, and they appear to desire their crown back.
From the opening the Winhawks knew they were in a fight. In spite of the Winhawk team of JR Samantha Quandahl, FR Alexandra Zuelke., 8th graders Reece Gawleski and Haley O’Neil swimming a season best 2:01.42; they managed a 2nd sandwiched by the Falcon relays.
The 200FR saw Winhawk SO MacKenzie Brosnahan letting Faribault know they were not just going to lie down. She won the race going away in 2:04.51.
The 200IM continued the statement, with FR Alexandra Zuelke winning the hard fought race with a second and a half to spare.
The 50FR was a close hard fought race with JR Bridget Bawek finishing second just 0.05 seconds behind Faribault’s Payton Brasseaur.
Diving went Faribault’s way. With two of the Winhawk divers behind at home (Lianna Hawthorne and Erin Busswell), 9th grader Crystal Franswa and 8th grader Janelle Mueller had excellent evenings but managed just a 3rd & 5th.
The 100FL was a hard fought race, JR Sam Quandahl stuck with Falcon standout Ellie Erickson and she took a solid second in 1:04.94.
The 100FR was another stamp on Winhawk MacKenzie Brosnahan’s stellar dance card. In spite of being a 4 length all out sprint; the race was not close with ‘Kenzie winning in 56.02, a nearly 2 seconds ahead of Faribault.
The 500 FR is a strong suit for Faribault and they took first with a sub 6 minute swim. Winhawk SR Co-Captain Aimee Peterson swam her best 500 of the year taking a solid second in a side by side race with Faribault’s Tess Burkhartzmeyer.
The 200FR Relay was a great race for the Winhawk team of Olivia Staats., Bridget Bawek., Aimee Peterson., and MacKenzie Brosnahan winning in 1:46.70 almost a full second ahead of Faribault.
The 100BK saw the WInhawks just eek out a 3rd.

The 100BR was a close fought race between Faribault’s Emily Behrens and the Winhawk FR Alexandra Zuelke. After swimming side by side for 4 straight lengths Alex touched a close second in 1:13.79. Winhawk JR Taylor Johnson swam a great third swimming her best time of the season.

The Winhawks finished the meet on a high note and won the 400FR Relay just as they have in every dual meet this year. The Winhawk team of Olivia S., Bridget B., MacKenzie B., and Alexandra Z. finished in 3:53.10.

The Winhawks came up short but had some stellar performances and some definate high points to build on. They next take on the Big 9 leading Rochester John Marshall Rockets on Thursday.

Winona takes on Faribault Tuesday

The Winona Winhawks (7-2) return to dual meet action Tuesday the 29th visiting Faribault (8-1).
Faribault has a very strong team and Coach Steve Burt’s choices are few if he wants to try and contend this meet.
Faribault has an all JR/SR sub 2 minute 200Medley Relay, and the Winhawk A relay of JR Sam Quandahl, FR Alexandra Zuelke, and 8th graders Reese Galewski and Haley O;Neil will have to sprint all out to match it.
The 200FR is also a strong suit for Faribault, Winhawk SO MacKenzie Brosnahan is the only Winhalk to keep up with their times this season.
The 200IM will also see Faribault shooting for a 1-2. Look for Winhawk FR Alexandra Zuelke to be called upon to breask up their plans.
The 50FR will be a very close race and is Winona’s first quality chance for a win on the evening, Look for JR Bridget Bawek to lead the field surrounded by the Faribault swimmers. Winhawk SR Co-Captain Aimee Peterson could step up as a real spoiler here.
Faribault is also a very strong diving team with JR Chelsea Borwege coming off a State Meet appearance last year. 9th Grader Crystal Franswa and JR. Lianna Hawthorne will have to have a good night on the board to prevent being outscored here.
The 100FL will require Sam Quandahl and 8th Grader Reese Galewski to swim their best of the year to beat Faribault’s Ellie Erickson.

The 100FR will also be a a strong Faribault event unless the Winhawk’s send MacKenzie Brosnahan to the blocks to contend.
The 500FR will see Faribault’s Jenna Peanasky swimming away wit the event, Winona will need to work hard to get high points for 2 – 5th.
The 200FR Relay will be a premier race and Winona’s A relay of JR Bridget Bawek, SO Olivia Staats, SR Aimee Peterson and 8h gr Haley O’Neil should take a first in the event.
The 100BK will require Sam Quandahl and Olivia Staats to push their season bests to take 2nd or 3rd.
The 100BR is another event that Winona will bring home the win with FR Alexandra Zuelke outdistancing the Faribault swimmers.
The 400FR Relay will also be Winona’s to win if Bawek, Staats, Brosnahan and Zuelke are not exhausted from earlier contests.

Swimming this Weekend - Winona Swimmers in the Pool

The college season swings into gear starting with the Men's & Women's Swimming & Diving programs at the University of Minnesota holding their annual Inrasquad events. Abbey Staats and Matt Papenfuss will be in the water for those. Starting gun for the first event (400 Med Relay) is 6PM.

Also Friday night, UW - EauClaire and Alyssa Trainor will be hosting Minnesota State University Mankato and Mary Bastian.

Saturday, John Fox and Tom Walsh (not an actual Winonan but we love him the same) will be swimming along with the St. Mary's Team against the UW-River Falls Falcons at SMU.

Next Week, the Winona Winhawks have a tough tough week, taking on Faribault on Tuesday and Rochester John Marshall at home on Thursday.

Winhawks fight the good fight, come up one race short

The Winona Winhawks hosted the Owatonna Huskies Tuesday night in a dual meet match-up. After having seen each other three days earlier at the Section 1AA True Team, everyone knew it was going to be a close contest for both the JV and the Varsities. Coach Burt recognizes that the dual meet season, while helpful to instill some racing experience and obtain some seed times, the dual record means nothing going into the end of the season. On Monday the meet the girls had swam some 5,000 yards. In most cases, the swims reflected it, but in a few cases, even after swimming almost 3 miles the day prior, the girls swam season best times.

The Opening 200 Med Relay saw Owatonna’s strength right out of the gate. The marquee swimmers for Owatonna swam a sub 2 minute race against the Winhawk team of JR Sam Quandahl, FR Alexandra Zuelke, 8th GR Reese Galewski and SR Co-Captain Aimee Peterson. Both JV and Varsity had the same result.

Score
VARSITY Owatonna – 10 Winona 4
JVARSITY Owatonna – 10 Winona - 4

The 200 FR was uncontested for the Winona JV and SR Cassie McKinley just touched out 7th GR McKenzie Porter. The Varsity event saw Owatonna going 1-2 with SO Oliva Staats, 8th Gr Haley O’Neil and JR Erika Johnsrud scoring points for 3, 4, &5.

Score
VARSITY Owatonna – 20 Winona 10
JVARSITY OWATONNA – 10 Winona - 17

The 200IM saw the JV’ers cede 1&2 to Owatonna but SO Mackenzie Brosnahan won the Varsity event in a near season best 2:22.08. 8th Gr McKenna Marg and JR Erin Bernardy scored points for Winona as well.

Score
VARSITY Owatonna – 27 Winona - 19
JVARSITY Owatonna – 21 Winona – 22

The Sprinting events have been a strong suit of the Winhawks all season long but Tuesday night they were challenged. The JV Winhawks brought home 1&2, but Owatonna’s O’Neill won the varsity event with JR Bridget Bawek and SR Co-Captain Aimee Peterson bringing home 2 & 3.

Score
VARSITY Owatonna – 36 Winona 26
JVARSITY Owatonna – 27 Winona – 32

Diving ended the Owatonna scoring streak, the Winhawk JV’ers Janelle Mueller, Megan Seeley and Sarah Scherbring took 3, 4, and 5 respectively for a 9-6 edge in points. The Winhawk Varsity divers scored points for 2, 3, &5 for an even 8-8 split.

Score
VARSITY Owatonna – 44 Winona - 34
JVARSITY Owatonna – 33 Winona - 41

The 100FL saw the younger Winhawks hold the older Huskies at bay. 8th Gr Reese Galewski and FR Alexandra Zuelke finished 2&3 and along with Erin Bernardy’s 5th place finish they pulled out another 8-8 split.

Score
VARSITY Owatonna – 52 Winona 42
JVARSITY Owatonna – 33 Winona – 47

The 100FR saw SR. Co-Captain Deni Cisewski winning the JV event and the Varsity swimmers Brosnahan, Bawek and O’Neil finishing 1,3,5 respectfully outscoring Owatonna 10 -6 to bring the meet within 6.

Score
VARSITY Owatonna – 58 Winona 52
JVARSITY Owatonna – 39 Winona – 57

For the 500FR, it looked like Coach Burt sent his swimmers to the starting blocks with orders to churn water. Winhawk JV’er McKenzie Porter swam the race of the season for her, improving over her best swim by nearly 9 seconds and winning the heat by almost a half a minute. In the Varsity event, The Winhawks swam hard, with JR Sam Quandahl being touched out for second in a season’s best 5:52.71 and SR Co-Captain Aimee Peterson one one hundredth off her season best in 6:06.11 for 4th.

Score
VARSITY Owatonna – 68 Winona 58
JVARSITY Owatonna – 48 Winona - 63

The 200 FR relay was an example of the sprinting depth of the Winhawks. The JV Winhawks took 2&3 while the Varsity Team of Staats, O’Neil, Bawek and Brosnahan won in a season low of 1:45.72. The B relay of FR Grace Ell, 8th Gr Gabby Kleinow, JR Erika Johnsrud, and 8th Gr Reese Galewski brought home a solid third. And a big 10 – 4 scoring punch to close within 4.

Score
VARSITY Owatonna – 72 Winona 68
JVARSITY Owatonna – 56 Winona - 69

The 100BK saw a solid JV win for SR Cassie McKinley, but Owatonna was strong in the Varsity holding the Winhawks looked like they were tiring bring home places 3,4,&5.

Score
VARSITY Owatonna – 82 Winona 74
JVARSITY Owatonna – 64 Winona - 77

The 100BR was more of the same with Owatonna outscoring the now tiring Winhawk JV 12 -5. The Varsity event was a great race wire to wire with FR Alexandra Zuelke swimming hard and coming back at the end but getting touched out at the pad.

Score
VARSITY Owatonna – 93 Winona - 79
JVARSITY Owatonna – 76 Winona 81

The 400Fr Relay saw the same scenario for the leaders in both JV and Varsity. The Winhawk JV’ers had the meet won; all they had to do was swim a clean race without jumping early on the exchanges. A sit turned out Owatonna was the team to jump early getting disqualified and the JV Winhawks brought home their win. The Owatonna Huskies had the Varsity meet won; they too just had to swim clean. The Winona Winhawk team of Staats, Bawek, Brosnahan and Zuelke rose to the occasion and swam a season best 3:54.16. Owatonna swam clean for 2nd and the Winhawk relay of O’Neil, Peterson, Galewski and Quandahl earned 3rd place.

Final Score

Varsity Owatonna – 97 Winona 89

Junior Varsity Owatonna – 76 Winona - 89

The Winhawks swim Tuesday Night against Owatonna

After finishing side-by-side in eth Section True Team, Winona & Owatonna should not have much for surprises for each other.

Owatonna will really test the Winhawks in the early events.

The 200FR will require a big effort from the Winhawks and will be a big determinant on the outcome.

The 50 FR will showcase the Owatonna Sprinter Erica O’Neill.

Too bad diving is over at the Middle School. The Winhawk divers will have a great test diving against Owatonna’s Sam Kniefel. FR Crystal, and JR’s Lianna Hawthorne and Erin Buswell will need to execute but should outscore the Huskies.

The 100FL will require JR Sam Quandahl and 8th gr Reese Galewski to be at their best to negate the team of Schneider and Johnson from Owatonna. This will be a good race and could tip the scales in either direction.

The 100FR will be its usual nail biter, look for a close 2-4th place race.

Owatonna has a sub 6 minute swimmer in Lindsey Price so Coach Burt will have to pick a Winhawk to try and counter that effort and score some additional mid-place points.

The 200FR Relay will be fast and neck and neck the entire way.

Winona can score some big points in the 100BK and they may need them at that point.

The 100BR will be a good contest for FR Alexandra Zuelke, if JR Taylor Johnson and a younger Winhawk can deliver the Winhawks could score big.

The 400Fr Relay should go to Winona, the only question is if the Winona “B” Relay can edge out a second place.

Weekend Recap and the weeks ahead

The Winhawks hosted the Section 1AA True Team meet last Saturday. Roch JM, Faribault, Owatonna, and Farmington joined them in a test of how deep their talent goes within their team. The results show both the strengths and weaknesses of each of the teams as they prepare themselves for the end of the season.

The Winhawks are reaching the peak of their workout schedule swimming 5,000 yards in the afternoon. The 200 Medley Relay was probably the most telling for the Winhawks, finishing in 5th a nearly a second and a half behind the next team.
The 200FR saw SO Mackenzie Brosnahan battle the strength of Roch JM finishing just out of second place.

The 200IM saw 8th gr Reese Galewski finishing highest for the Winhawks. Winhawk JR Erin Bernardy produced her personal best time dropping nearly 3 seconds.

In the 50FR, FR Alexandra Zuelke and JR Bridget Bawek went 5 & 6 with mid-26’s.

Diving saw FR Crystal Franswa and JR Liana Hawthorne finish a solid 6th & 7th

In the 100FL, Winona saw their second third place finish of the day with JR Samantha Quandahl swimming just shy of her season best.

In the 100FR, SO Mackenzie Brosnahan brought home the best showing of the day. In an all out sprint her 55.72 was a full second ahead of 3rd place and 3rd through 8th were separated by only 2 seconds.

The 500FR saw SR Co-captain Aimee Peterson bringing home the Winhawk’s highest finish. 8th grader Gabby Kleinow was right behind her. 7th gr McKenzie Porter, the only 7th grade swimmer in the field of 22 brought home 16th place in a personal best of 6:32.02, nearly a 3 second drop.

The 200Fr Relay highlighted Winona strength. The near opposite of the Medley Relay, the Team of JR Bridget Bawek, SO Olivia Staats, SR Aimee Peterson and SO Mackenzie Brosnahan brought home 2nd place in 1:46.35.

The 100BK saw JR Samantha Quandahl finish in 5th and So Olivia Staats in 6th. The event saw two personal bests of the season; Olivia swam a 1:08.23 and 8th gr McKenna Marg touched in 1:12.64.

The 100BR was the most exciting race of the day. FR Alexandra Zuelke saw neck and neck with Elizabeth Wolfe of Farmington the entire 100 yards. In the end Alexandra touched second by only 0.03 seconds. Taylor Johnson swam a personal best 1:17.04 finishing a solid 6th place.

The 400FR Relay was a satisfying repeat of the 200FR and ended the meet on a high note for the Winhawks. The Team of JR Bridget Bawek, SO Olivia Staats, SO Mackenzie Brosnahan and FR Alexandra Zuelke brought home 2nd place in 3:54.25.

Final Scores

Rochester JM, 720

Faribault 716.5

Farmington 609

Winona 558

Owatonna 537.5

This Saturday, the Section 1AA True Team Meet hosted by the Winona Winhawks

Saturday both the Winona Middle School and the Winona Senior High pools will be churned up as five teams join Winona to compete in the Section 1AA True Team Meet.

True Team Meets are a concept put together by coaches to truly gauge the depth of their teams. Unlike a dual or invitational where a team is limited to 3 entries, in the True Team Meet format, a team is allowed to enter as many swimmers as they want, and the event scores all of the swimmers entered. There is a restriction on how many events a swimmer can be in, This format allows the Section teams to enter all their swimmers and truly gauge their depth against the other entire teams.

Joining Winona in the pool will be fellow Section 1AA combatants Rochester John Marshall, Rochester Century, Owatonna, Faribault, and Farmington.

Rochester John Marshall is undefeated in dual meets coming into this week with a second place finish in the Lakeville Relays and a first place finish in the Packer Invitational last weekend. They are a very strong squad led by the Fujan sisters, JR Catlin and SR Brianna. 9th gr Alison Schumacher set a pool record Thursday evening in the 50FR, at 24.48 and diver JR Megan Lawson will place high over at the Middle School as well.

Rochester Century swam twice this week and I suspect they won those contests, putting them at around 8-1 on the season. Their only loss coming to Rochester JM. Perhaps they will be a little worn out and the other teams can capitalize. Winona swam against them back on 9/15 and lost 95-87. The Century swimmers to keep an eye on include Sr. Kathleen VanDeVoorde BK, Jr. Jennifer Strom BR, Jr. Claire Anderson FL, and SR. Gretchen Heidorn FR.

Owatonna came away from the Packer Invitational last weekend in a 3rd place tie with Rochester Mayo behind, .....wait for it, Rochester JM and Rochester Century. Athletes to watch include Sr. Erica O’Neill in the 100FL & 100BK, SR Diver Samantha Kniefel has been scoring well all season and SO Lindsey Price will look to score high in the 500FR.

Farmington comes down from the edge of the TC Metro area where they swim in the Missota Conference (as did yours truly wayyyyy back when). Watch for SR Kristin Peters, a standout in the 200 & 500 FR.

Faribault at 7-1 also only has one loss, to the same foe Roch Century did, and that would be Roch JM. Look for Rochester JM Rockets standouts SR. Jenna Peanasky in the 200FR, Diving keep an eye on JR. Chelsea Borwege and come distance time, JR Ellie Erickson in the 500FR.

Lastly the Winona Winhawks enter the meet 6-1 and ready to defend their home turf. They haven’t been in competition for 8 days and I believe they are ready to take on all comers. Watch for SO Mackenzie Brosnahan to make a statement early, SO Oliva Staats had a stand out evening in their last meet and I would look for her to continue that trend. FR Alexandra Zuelke will lead the charge in the 100BR and JR Utility swimmer Samantha Quandahl will be contributing in the BK and plugged in where ever the squad needs her most. 8th gr diver Crystal Franswa will get her first chance to make a statement in front of the Section 1AA talent she will see in again in November. Winona should score some big points from their sprinters in the 50FR, 100FR, 200FR Relay and 400 FR Relay, when JR Bridget Bawek, SR Co-Captain Aimee Peterson, and 8th gr Haley O’Neil hit the water. The younger talent will be able to score in this meet as well, 8th graders Reese Galewski and Gabby Kleinow will be high in the standings and will help the team cause.

The College Season Kicks Off

This Thursday marks the start of the college swimming season. Minnesota State University Mankato gets first dibs swimming  Thursday afternoon for their Men's & Women's Intrasquad contests. This Saturday the University of Wisconsin River Falls does the same with their Intrasquad meets.

By the way, just as we start including discussions on college swimming and keeping a watch, word is out amongst the swimming community that UW-RF is talking about shutting down their swimming program for lack of a modern facility. Contact the following administrators before Wednesday Afternoon about the shortsightedness of that decision and the benefits of a swim program to the athletes, college community and the community.

Speaking of Watching Former Winona Swimmers in College

It got me to thinking about the opportunities for young people to continue their swimming and diving after high school. Having only one of the two Winona four year institutions supporting swimming & diving, it is easy to loose sight of the idea that a student can select a school that suits them both academically and socially/athletically. (By the way, every chance I get, I mention to Dr. Judith Ramaley at WSU that a new pool and swimming program would be a good addition to the institution. I just told her Saturday night at the athletic scholarship auction that she would look good in a Winona State Swimming Shirt! Feel free to chime in!)

Sorry,  I digress, as I was saying, I combine social and athletics because unlike high school, many times a college Freshman is going to an environment with no connections, no “circle” to speak of. A college selection that includes joining a swim team makes for an instant group to associate with and coaches that can provide an reassuring anchor. I was both a college athlete AND a dormitory head resident. I saw first hand how acclimation into college life was augmented by group association or soured by isolation and home sickness.

Following up on Winona swimmers at college, and then starting to do some perusing, I have found over 50 colleges, from Div 1 through NAIA, in the six state area (MN,WI, ND, SD, IA, IL) that have swimming and diving programs.

First and foremost, definitely give Eric Lindquist and his program at St. Mary’s Winona a serious look.

If you want to look further, you parents with Seniors, compare this list to the one you have amassed so far, and you parents of Juniors, it is never too early to start.

When my, never met him before but soon to be my college coach, had come recruiting to my high school, I had never even heard of his college before. Upon discovering they had the engineering program I had been looking for, I was very glad he did.

The Swim Season Heats Up

We are mid-way through the High School Girl's season with Sections and the State Meet coming up next month in November.

The Winona Wizards USA Team is practicing with their first meet coming up in a month.

The YMCA Winfins team is completing their Stroke Clinic and start practices a week from Monday.

Add to that, this week starts the kick-off of the College swimming Season. Winona has graduates swimming at the University of Minnesota (Matt Papenfuss & Abbey Staats), University of Wisconsin Eau Claire (Alyssa Trainor), University of Wisconsin River Falls (Roxy Pingry), and Minnesota State University Mankato, (Mary Bastian).

There will be some other large meets going on to keep note of.

The USA Swimming Gran Prix Series returns this year and again, the first stop is in Minneapolis at the University of Minnesota on November 13. With the 2009 AT&T Short Course National  Championships taking place on Dec 4th,  I suspect there will be some big names competing in Minneapolis. I will watch for the psyc sheet to come out and let you know who is planning on attending. It is a nearby opportunity to take yoru young swimmers to see some great swimming and see some names in the swimming world. In Minneapolis the swimmers are very easy to approach and get autographs from.

I'll follow all of these teams and individuals as best I can to keep you informed on what is happening in Winona swimming, with former Winona swimmers, and with notible USA swimmers. Stay tuned.

Another impressive win for the Winhawks.

The Winona Winhawks go to 6-1 after a 98-84 win over the Rochester Mayo Spartans. Again, there was some uncertainty for each team due to swimmers being ill, but it was pretty even between the two teams. Both coaches had to do some line-up shuffling based on who was and was not available.

The 200Med Relay was hotly contested and the Mayo team touched out the Winhawks by less than a second to take an 8 – 6 lead.

The 200FR was the start of an awesome evening for SO Winhawk Olivia Staats. Staats dominated the 200FR touching in 2:08.90, a full 12+ seconds in front of the Mayo swimmers on both sides of her.

The score is now tied 15 – 15.

The 200IM sees Mayo pull off a 1 -3 finish with Winhawk SO Mackenzie Brosnahan taking 2nd in 2:24.66 with 8th gr Reese Galewski and JR Erin Bernardy scoring additional points for the Winhawks.

Score Mayo 24 – Winona 22

The Freestyle Sprinting Events continue to be strong points for the Winhawks and Thursday was no exception. In the JV event Winhawk JR Erika Johnsrud, SR Deni Cisewski and FR Samantha Johnson finish 1, 2, & 4. The Varsity Event sees Winona’s JR Bridget Bawek, in spite of missing some time out ill, take a strong first in 26.85. Winhawk 8th gr Haley O’Neil continues to impress taking 2nd and JR Taylor Johnson touches out lane 5 for 4th place.

Winhawks 34 – Mayo 28

Diving scores big points as well with FR Crystal Franswa, JR Lianna Hawthorne and SR Erin Buswell score an impressive 1,2,3 finish.

Winhawks 47 – Mayo 30

The 100FL sees Mayo Big Gun SR. Katelyn Crowley take first with SO Alexandra Zuelke, JR Samantha Quandahl and 8th Gr Reese Galewski taking 2, 3, & 4.

Score Winona 56 – Mayo 37

The 100FR was a rewind of the Winhawk domination in the 50FR. The JV event sees Winhawk SR Deni Cisewski, SR Co-Captain Cassie McKinley and FR Samantha Johnson finish 1, 2, and 3. The Varsity Event is identical with SO Olivia Staats continuing her rampage and wins going away in 58.73 seconds. JR Bridget Bawek and 8th gr Haley O’Neil bring home 2nd & 3rd.

Winhawks 69 – Mayo 40

In the 500FR Mayo inserted JR Kalene Wileman cranking out a tough 5:54.74. Winhawk SO Mackenzie Brosnahan brings home 2nd. 8th gr Gabby Kleinow seems to have one tough race after another. Here she swims side-by-side with Mayo SR Rachel Cook and digs deep to beat her by 2 seconds at the pad. Winhawk 7th gr McKenzie Porter gets her best time of the season to earn points in 5th place.

Winhawks 77 – Mayo 48

The 200FR Relay was dominated by the Winhawk team of Staats, O’Neil, Bawek and Brosnahan. Their time of 1:47.68 wins by half a pool length.

Winona 87 – Mayo 52

The 100 Back sees the JV go 1, 2, and 3 with JR Erin Bernardy, SO Grace Ell and SO Ashlen Haines. The Varsity event has Winhawk team workhorse JR Samantha Quandahl take 2nd in 1:08.28.

Winona 92 – Mayo 63

The 100BR JV sees strong swims out of 8th gr Greer Kosidowski and Razil Campbell taking 1st & 2nd. The Varsity Event featured another dominating performance by SO Alexandra Zuelke winning by nearly 6 second in 1:13.77. Winhawk JR. Taylor Johnson brought home 2nd in 1:19.38.

Winona 98 – Mayo 73 (Winona starts to swim exhibition to wave points)

The 400FR was the cap on SO Olivia Staats’ very strong evening. Swimming lead-off she and Bawek, Brosnahan and Zuelke bring home 1st with a nearly 3 second margin in 3:58.03.

Final score Winona 98 – Mayo 85
