This is my blog that follows swimming & diving in Winona MN and those Winonans that have left to swim elsewhere. Occasionally I will post items of info related to swimming & diving in general.

They keep coming and coming! What’s it gonna take to stop ‘em!

The Winona Winhawks (5-4-0) (4-2-0) might have relaxed a little too much going into their Thursday night contest with the Austin Packers (1-8-0), (1-6-0). After their battle Tuesday night with JM, the Winhawks were looking for a breather, and maybe breathed too easy.

The Packers Coach, Lynn Gulbrandson, expressed his frustration that his team might be the best 1-14 team in the state by end of season. They have been in practically every meet but can’t quite seal the deal. Thursday was no exception, every time the Winhawks built a lead, the Packers came roaring back to keep it close. In the end, the Winhawk depth came through and put things out of reach.

The 200 Medley Relay went as expected, Winona swam their standard and held the Packers at bay with room to spare. Morgan Whyte, Sr. Co-Captain Alex Zuelke, Reese Galewski and Haley O’Neill were on top of their game. McKenna Marg, Team Sparkplug Greer Kosidowski, Hanna O’Neill and Kailey Kronebusch brought home the points for 3rd place!

The 200 Freestyle was typical of what the evening would hold. After falling behind, Austin would bounce back. Their Big Gun State Finalist Helen Heimark took the field out for a ride and finished 1st.  Winhawk Jr. Haley O’Neill was in 2nd and Greer Kosidowski swam what appears to be a personal best for 4th!

The 200 IM came as no surprise, Austin swam the same line-up they had all season. Winona Head Coach Steve Burt knew what he had to beat, and left it in the hands of his youngsters to pull a big one out of their hat. Austin finishes 1-2 with Fr. Alexandra Arnold swimming an unofficial personal best to finish just behind in 3rd. So. McKenzie Porter and Jr. Razil Campbell finish 4-5 respectively to keep the damage to a minimum but Austin takes the lead.

The 50 Freestyle looked a little like a case of putting out the campfire fire by letting loose the dam. Sr. Co-Captain  Alex Zuelke won the splash and dash with plenty of room to spare. Jr. Emily Thurow added the 3rd place and the Winhawks pull even with the Packers.

Packers               31                        Winona              31

Diving, taking place at the Middle School had a profound impact on the course of the meet, they just didn’t know it as they were under a different roof. Sr. Co-Captain Crystal Franzwa was modestly challenged in talking the win, Jr. Janelle Mueller finishes comfortably in 3rd and Fr. Sarah Scherbring ekes out her challenger to take 4th and the divers once again score big (11-5) for the Winhawks!

Packers               36                        Winona              42

The 100 Butterfly saw Winhawk Jr. Reese Galewski stroke her way to a victory wire to wire. Fr. Hanna O’Neill took 4th and perhaps inspired by the Senior Night Festivities, Sr. Sami Johnson swims an unofficial personal best to add scoring in 5th to keep Winona out front!

Packers               43                        Winona              51

The 100 Freestyle was an entertaining affair. Winona Winhawk Leader Haley O’Neill went after retribution for her 200 Free and succeeded. Taking the race out hard she built a 32 hundredths lead by the 50 and then held off a charging Heimark to take the win in 22 hundredths! In second place, making a rare 100 Free appearance, Fr. Morgan Whyte scores an unofficial personal best taking 3rd and the Winhawks pad their lead a little bit more.

Packers               50                        Winona              60

The 500 Freestyle was going to be a battle for the Winhawks. Austin has two swimmers performing just under 6 minutes and the Winhawk distance girls have been bumping into that barrier head first! Along with regulars Razil Campbell and McKenzie Porter, Coach Burt throws Jr. Reese Galewski into the fray with the mission of busting up the Packer pair.  The Austin swimmers rise to the occasion swimming near or at season lows finishing 1-2. Razil works hard and again butts up against that barrier but does cross taking 3rd. Reese has a goggle seepage problem and swims blind for 450 yards. For 4th and McKenzie runs out of gas mid-way through but still scores in 5th. Austin is now peeking back in the door looking to step in!

Packers               60                        Winona              66

The 200 Freestyle Relay had some time to get rallied and stoked during the distance event. The result was a season low time for Haley O’Neill, Morgan Whyte, and Zuelke solidifying their position in the 7th fastest Winhawk relay ever. Arnold, Hanna O’Neill, Kronebusch and Brommerich swim 3rd wire to wire to help reestablish the Winhawk lead to a more comfortable margin.

Packers               64                        Winona              76

The 100 Backstroke was the proverbial straw and allowed to Winhawks to start breathing a little easier. Freshman Morgan Whyte led the entire race swimming just tenths off a personal best to take the win. Jr. McKenna Marg swims a solid 2nd and Alex Arnold touches out her closest Packer to contribute 4th. The 12-4 scoring differential pretty much seals the deal knowing who is to come next.

Packers               68                        Winona              88

The 100 Breaststroke is the playground of Sr. Co-Captain Alex Zuelke. She lost a very close contest on Tuesday night and it was glaringly apparent she was not going to allow it to happen a second time in a row. Zuelke came off the start with the lead and pulled away with the first stroke. It was all cruising from there and she touched over half a pool length ahead of the field! Jr. Greer Kosidowski touched in 3rd breaking through her barrier and their points put the meet away for the Winhawks.

Packers               75                        Winona              97

The 400 Freestyle Relay was projected to go to the Packers and it did outright, even though the Winhawks were swimming exhibition not needing the points.
