This is my blog that follows swimming & diving in Winona MN and those Winonans that have left to swim elsewhere. Occasionally I will post items of info related to swimming & diving in general.

"No Winhawks went this way, there's no tracks!" "That's because they're 3 feet off the ground, follow me!"

Winona swimmers came off a high flying weekend where they competing at the Packer Invitational. Hitting the water a total of 52 times in relays and individual events, after 36 of those splashes the Winhawks were staring up at a season best time on the scoreboard. In 23 of those 36 splashes, a Winhawk was celebrating a new personal best time. The boys are gaining momentum with each workout and meet.

None too soon as well, as Tuesday night the Winhawks ( 0-2-0) (0-2-0) travel to Rochester to swim and dive against the Rockets of John Marshall (2-2-1), (2-2-0).

It will be a fun meet to watch, JM has some great talent and the Winhawks will need to be all over their starts and turns, needing every edge to keep the Rockets honest.

Some key battles will include:

Winona’s Hodd Gorman and JM’s Ted Duff in the 200 Freestyle.

Winona Cotter Sophomore Roger Brosnahan has been turning heads with his return to the pool this year and he will get a real test out of JM’s Senior sprinter Tanner Nimke in the 50 Freestyle.

It is an away meet and we ALL know what that means, you ALL get to watch diving and you are in for a treat. JM’s Austin Cook is putting on one clinic after another with each meet he dives. After advancing to state last year but missing out on the finals, Cook has been diving with purpose this year. Winona’s Dan Karnick has made great strides, but Austin is something to see.

The 500 Freestyle will be another Gorman & Duff rematch I am betting. This will NOT be the time to go out to the concession stand. The 500 Free is one race I would take in!

The Winhawks look good to carry the 200 Freestyle Relay in this meet.
