This is my blog that follows swimming & diving in Winona MN and those Winonans that have left to swim elsewhere. Occasionally I will post items of info related to swimming & diving in general.

Winhawks back at their dual meet schedule.

School is back in session and the Winona Boy’s Swimming & Diving Dual Meet schedule kicks back into gear.

The boys spent a quiet holiday season working out with a quick appearance by former Winhawk now D I swimmer Matt Papenfuss. Matt worked out with the guys a few days while home for Christmas, then left to accompany his University of Minnesota teammates on their winter training trip to sunny Hawaii.

The school break work out regimen was capped off with the traditional eye opening 100x100 team swim at 9AM New Years Day morning.

This week the Winhawks start up competition again traveling to Austin to take on the Packers at Ellis Middle School. I will report more on that match-up over the next few days.

Right now we go back to discussing the University of MN Hawaiian training trip. The trip, while sounding glamorous, is a two to three workout a day grind where the guys build camaraderie but get little time for much other than swim-eat-sleep. The trip did feature a dual meet against the University of Hawaii with the Gophers leaving the pool victorious, 160-98.

Former Winhawk Matt Papenfuss, refreshed from his few days home with family and friends, swam to a second place finish in the 200 Freestyle clocking 1:41.37. He had the 5th fastest time in the 100 Freestyle swimming 46.55. Rounding out the day Matt swam a 50 Free split of 20.82 in the 200 Freestyle Relay helping his team to the 3rd fastest time.

The Number 12 Ranked MN Gophers return from their trip in time to host Missouri on January 15th at the U of MN Aquatic Center. Mizzou is polling just outside the Top 25 rankings and the Gophers would like to keep them there. They are staging another Pack the Pool Event!
