Winona Winhawks prevail in their annual Border Battle with Holmen/Onalaska. Next up, the Owatonna Huskies!

The 200 Medley Relay was Winona’s, except for the “A” Relay being DQ’ed for an Early Leave by one of the mid-swimmers. That jump was not what got the Winhawks their 3 second margin of victory so the effort was for naught. The boys were practicing starts before the meet, but apparently still have a little work to do. When the referees conferred and agreed on the DQ, the Head Referee reported it to the Scoring table. Everyone at the scoring table reported also seeing the early leave which means a good deal of the crowd must have seen the early leave.  Winona takes 2nd bracketed by H/O and the Polar Bears take the lead.

Winona      4                 Holmen/Onalaska        10

The 200 Freestyle saw the first of 10 consecutive 1st place finishes in the meet. Cotter Freshman Hodd Gorman, scored a come-from-behind 1st place after trailing Winhawk Junior Joey Kleinow and H/O’s Arroyo. It was a new personal best for Hodd swimming it for the 3rd time this year.

Winhawks  14               Holmen/Onalaska        16

The 200 IM again saw Winhawk youth faring very well and gave positive indications for the future. Freshman Cal Dretske swam a hard race taking 1st place and just a hair off his personal best. 8th Grader Kyle Schneider took second establishing yet another IM personal best, his sixth time in six entries. Winona takes the lead and will not look back for the rest of the meet.

Winona      25               Holmen/Onalaska        21

The 50 Freestyle saw Sr. Co-Captain Louie La Porta, flirting with that 23 second level that he attained at True Team. He swam to 1st place in a 24.07. Winhawk Junior Alex Kline was right behind him to take 2nd. Finally Winhawk Junior Avery Prondzinski swimming the 50 for the second time in a dual this year improves on his initial swim for a new personal best to take 4th. The solid 1-2-4 finish pads the Winhawk lead.

Winona      37               Holmen/Onalaska        25

Diving was a point bonanza as H/O does not have any divers.  Winhawk Sr. Co-Captain Justin Bublitz took the win and Sr. Stan Petkov placed 2nd.

Winona      47               Holmen/Onalaska        25

The 100 Butterfly was Winhawk 8th Grader Kyle Schneider second personal best swim of the evening winning with room to spare. Junior Alex Kline competing in the 100 Fly for the second time dropped 4 ½ seconds from his initial outing to capture 3rd.

Winona      57               Holmen/Onalaska        31

The 100 Freestyle saw the Winhawks laying it all out to try and keep the momentum going. Sr. Co-Captain Louie La Porta, Junior Joey Kleinow and Sr. Co-Captain Gio Borsari finish 1-2-3 with Kleinow and Borasari setting new personal best times!

Winona      70               Holmen/Onalaska        34

The 500 Freestyle could have been billed as the Hodd Gorman show. The  Winhawk Freshman won going away. He established yet another personal best time, his sixth in the last seven 500 swims Sr. Danjeer Presson combined with Freshman Alex Miller who swam a personal best time to score 3rd & 4th respectively.

Winona      81               Holmen/Onalaska        38

The 200 Freestyle Relay was the Winhawks’ with room to spare. The “A” Relay consisted of Juniors Alex Kline and Avery Prondzinski, teamed with the Sr. Co-Captains Louie La Porta and Gio Borsari.

Winona      91               Holmen/Onalaska        42

Winhawk Jr. Avery Prondzinski wins the 100 Backstroke and Sr. Co-Captain Gio Borsari takes 3rd as the Winhawks begin to score as exhibition entries giving the points to H/O.

Winona      91               Holmen/Onalaska        52

The 100 Breaststroke was a great race for Winhawk Freshman Cal Dretske. He was head to head with H/O’s Bartheld for over 50 yards, then Cal’s training allowed Cal to swim away from him. Cal finishes in 1st place and Sophomore Jake Johnson cruises to 3rd place.

Winona      91               Holmen/Onalaska        65

The 400 Freestyle relay went to H/O and the Winhawks did not need it.

Final Scores:

JV
Winona      62               Holmen/Onalaska        35

Varsity
Winona      91               Holmen/Onalaska        77

Thursday the Winhawks (3-2, 2-2) travel to Owatonna to take on the Huskies (4-1, 4-1).

This will be a very tough meet as Owatonna has numbers which equates into depth. Nearly 45 swimmers and divers crowd the deck around their bench and there will be plenty of room for them to swim filling both varsity and JV events. The Huskies have some quality swimmers that can cross events to swim effectively where needed. Most gifted is Huskie Senior Michael Crabtree. He is capable of winning both the 50 Free and the 500 Free in the same meet, as well as throwing in a good 200 Free, Butterfly or 100 Free, the kid can do it all.

Key matches to watch will be the sprints, 50 & 100.

Diving will be Justin Bublitz’s and both Stan Petkov and Dan Karnick are capable of placing 2nd & 3rd

The 500 Freestyle depending on where Crabtree is swum.

The Huskies have Sophomore Kellen Glynn doing 57’s in the 100 Fly.

The Huskies have a 1:03 100 back swimmer in Cole Martinez and Kellen Glynn is a 1:08 breaststroker to give Winhawk Freshman Cal Dretske a real push.

The Golden Gophers added six event wins to the five they won on Friday to compile 274 points, edging Harvard who finished second with a team total of 250.

Divers lead the way to Winhawks taming the Tigers

The Winona Winhawk (2-2, 2-2) Boys Swimming & Diving Team traveled to Albert Lea last Thursday for a dual meet with the Tigers (0-7, 0-7). The meet started out close and was a see-saw battle until Diving. The Winhawks go 1-2 in Diving and from there they start to pull away. They finally buried the Tigers by going 1-2 in the 200 Freestyle Relay. In the end, Winona won all but 2 races and learned a little about depth along the way.

The Winhawks got off to a rough start, with the “A” relay getting disqualified for swimming out of sequence. Seems the guys decided (without talking to coach), while behind the blocks, to shuffle the stroke line-up around. What they didn’t know that the lead-off swimmer cannot be altered from the line-up once it has been submitted to the Referee.

Winona      6                 Albert Lea  8

The 200 Freestyle saw Winhawk Junior Joey Kleinow take the win for the ‘Hawks. Sophomore Jake Johnson swam to a solid 3rd for the Winhawks

Winona      15               Albert Lea  15

The 200 IM was won by Winona’s up and coming Freshman Cal Dretske. Cotter 8th Grader Aaron Whyte contributes points for 5th but the middle finishes give the Tigers back the lead.

Winona      22               Albert Lea  24

The 50 Freestyle saw another Winhawk victory, this time for Sr. Co-Captain Louie La Porta. Placing 3rd was Junior Alex Kline and the meet is all even at the Diving.

Winona      31               Albert Lea  31

The Winhawk Divers see the tie and put their personal touch on things by placing 1-2-4. Sr. Co-Captain Justin Bublitz places first in 227.90, and Sr. Stan Petkov scores a personal high 186.40 to place second. The 12-4 scoring differential hits the Tigers hard on the scoreboard.

The 100 Butterfly is another Winhawk win, this time Young Winhawk 8th Grader Kyle Schneider takes the victory with Alex Kline swimming to a solid 3rd place to build on the Winhawks lead.

The 100 Freestyle sees Winhawk Sr. Co-Captain Louie La Porta take his second win of the evening with Jr. Joey Kleinow taking a solid 2nd and Jr. Kory McDonald swimming to 4th. The 12-4 scoring kicks the meet into overdrive for the Winhawks.

Winona      64               Albert Lea  46

The 500 Freestyle is all Cotter Freshman Hodd Gorman. He swims out front by himself pacing his way to another personal best, the 3rd time in his last 4 swims.

Winona      71               Albert Lea  55

The 200 Freestyle Relay turned out to be a backbreaker for the Tigers. With the Winhawk “A” Relay out in front, the “B” Relay of Sr. Co-Captain Gio Borsari, Sr. Co-Captain Justin Bublitz, Jr. Dan Karnick, (both divers now swimming I will point out to you) and Jr. Kory McDonald, go out hard and hang on to take second by 12 hundredths of a second and swing the Winhawks a 12-2 point total.

Winona      83               Albert Lea  57

The 100 Backstroke sees a resurgence from the Tigers, they are not out of the meet yet and the Winhawks take 2-5.

Winona      88               Albert Lea  68

The 100 Breaststroke brings Winhawks Dretske, Johnson and Kosidowski to the blocks looking to quell the Tiger resurgence.  Dretske and Johnson go 1-2 and Jr. Conor Kosidowski shaves 5 seconds off his personal best to score 5th place and seal the win for the Winhawks.

Winona      99               Albert Lea  73

The 400 Freestyle Relay sees the Winhawks take 1st & 3rd but swim them exhibition. The “A” Relay swims their second fastest time of the season but didn’t need it.

Come on across the river and swim awhile why don’t ya?

On Tuesday night the Holmen/Onalaska Boys Swimming Team comes to Winona for a dual meet contest.

The Wisconsinites have some respectable swimmers and will look to challenge the Winhawks in a number of key races. This meet will be won by the middle finishes and may not be determined until late in the meet.

The 200 Medley Relay will be contested hotly with both teams swimming low 1:50’s typically.

The 500 Freestyle will be a great contest to watch. Cotter Freshman Hodd Gorman, setting personal best times in 4 of his last 5 swims will be challenged by H/O’s Arroyo and Bowman.

The 100 Backstroke will pit Winhawk Junior Avery Prondzinski against H/O’s Barthheld. It should be a very close race.

The 100 Breaststroke will see a good challenge for Winona Freshman Cal Dretske in the shape of H/O’s Strauss.

Thursday the Winhawks are back on the road for a Big 9 Conference Meet against the Owatonna Huskies.

Winhawks look to keep young Tigers at bay!

The Winona Winhawk Boys Swimming & Diving Team (1-2, 1-2) travels to Albert Lea (0-6, 0-6) to see if they can continue their time shaving ways. The meet is a re-schedule of a weather cancellation back in early December.

The Winhawk Boys, while inexperienced and quickly learning, are well represented in the Junior and Senior classes. The Tiger’s season record on the other hand, may be exhibiting their lack of Seniors.  A roster about the same size as the Winhawks, the Tigers have no Seniors on their roster submitted to the MSHSL. They have a handful of Juniors and Sophomores and a slug of Freshman and 8th graders. As such, the Tigers work hard but have a very uphill battle each and every meet. In their recent meet with Faribault, the Falcons started swimming exhibition at 90-48 ending up at 90-88 for the meet.  The Winhawks should be able to stretch their boundaries and Coach Burt can have a chance to see what his guys can do in some off event swims.

I won’t so an event by event synopsis as it is very difficult to predict who will swim what from both benches.

Winhawk fans head to Albert Lea and take in an interesting and exciting night of swimming. This is one meet where I can truly say anything can happen.
