While the Winona Winhawks (1-1), (0-1) possess skills,
they ran into a couple of (k)Nacks in Mankato Thursday evening. Mankato West
Sophomore Daniel Nack and her Sister, Freshman Chantal Nack teamed up to
provide nearly 1/3 of the Scarlets’ 96 scored points in handing the Winhawks
their first loss of the season.
The Winhawks came out hot. The 200 Medley Relay team of
Cotter Sr. Mackenzie Brosnahan, Cotter Jr. Alexandra Zuelke, Sophomore Reese Galewski,
and Sophomore Haley O’Neil swam a time faster than their entire dual meet season last
year and were less than a second off their 2009 Big 9 Conference time. The 2nd
relay sees Sophomore Abbey Quandahl hand her teammates a nearly 3 second lead
and Cotter Sophomore Emily Thurow, Bluffview 8th Grader Hanna O’Neil
and Cotter 8th Grader Alexandra Arnold pad that another 2 seconds to
finish a very secure 3rd place to start the meet out right.

The 200 Freestyle sees the formidable Daniel Nack rise
onto the block for Mankato West. She is the current pool record holder in 200
Free. An accomplishment in itself for a HS Sophomore only this is a pool
regularly used by College Division II swimmers. Up for the Winhawks is Sophomore
Reese Galewski and in spite of swimming her personal best by nearly a second
and a half, Nack swims a 1:55, 6 seconds under the State Meet qualifying time
to take the win. Cotter Sophomore McKenna Marg places 4th and Sophomore
Greer Kosidowski is 9 one-hundredths off a personal best to take the points for
5th away from Mankato West.

The 200 IM features the Winhawk with a knack for speed,
Cotter Sr. Mackenzie Brosnahan. Kenzie swims a personal best to take the win
from the younger Nack, Chantal. Freshman McKenzie Porter in her first IM entry
of the season swims home to take the points for 5th and the meet is
all tied up.

The 50 Freestyle is hotly contested, with Cotter Junior
Alexandra Zuelke placing 2nd getting touched out by 2 tenth. A
consolation is Sophomore Haley O’Neil taking 3rd with 2 tenths to
spare over her Scarlet adversary. Cotter Sophomore Emily Thurow does the same
to get the Winhawks the last points up for grabs and the teams split the
scoring 8-8 to maintain the tie going into diving.

The Winhawk divers put their best foot forward as they
dove in a crowded field. The Winhawks are carrying 6 divers on the squad this
year while Mankato West had 9 taking hurdles. I can’t give official highlights
because the officials couldn’t find their flashcard scorecards to judge diving.
They had to write down their scores and an admin person at the scoring table
had to look over their shoulders and transfer the scores onto the dive sheets.
So we spectators were left in the dark to score along on our own heads. Higher scored
dives for the girls included Junior Crystal Franzwa’s Reverse 2 SS Tuck and
Forward 1 SS with 2 ½ twists. Sophomore Janelle Mueller’s Inward 1 ½ SS Tuck
and Back 1 ½ SS Tuck were both judge pleasers. When the water settled Crystal
won handily with Janelle scoring points for 3rd place. The 9 points
put the Winhawks back out in front.

The 100 Butterfly sees the return of Mankato West star Danielle
Nack and once again Winhawk Sophomore Reese Galewski gets to go head-to-head
with her. Reese swam hard but Nack had bigger plans than winning and set yet
another pool record to go along with the two she already holds. Bluffview 8th
Grader Hanna O’Neil swims to 4th and Junior Ashlen Haines takes home
the point for 5th to keep the meet at least tied again.
Winona 47 Mankato West 47
The 100 Freestyle sees Sophomore Haley O’Neil take 2nd
and Cotter Sophomore Emily Thurow take 4th.
Winona 53 Mankato West 57
The 500 Freestyle put a major crimp in the Winhawks plans
as the Scarlets, led by young Freshman Chantal Nack go 1-2-3 on the Winhawks. Cotter
Sophomore McKenna Marg takes 4th and Sophomore Greer Kosidowski swims
to a personal best for the second time in as many days to secure 5th.

The 200 Freestyle relay explained why the Winhawks won so
handily in the 200 Medley. Mankato West loads the 200 Free Relay with Lohman, Bacon,
and the two Nack sisters. The Winhawk team of Zuelke, H. O’Neil, Thurow and
Brosnahan swim their fastest dual meet relay ever in a great up and down battle
but each Scarlet gets an ever so slight 2 tenths edge on each successive
Winhawk and the Winhawks get touched out in the end placing 2nd. Doing
their part to try and keep the meet close, the 2nd Winhawk relay of
Quandahl, H. O’Neil, Kosidowski and Arnold swim to 3rd for more
points.
Winona 62 Mankato West 78
The 100 Backstroke gets the Winhawks back on a winning
track. Cotter Senior Mackenzie Brosnahan wins handily in spite of just having
climbed out of the water swimming anchor on the 200 Free Relay. Freshman McKenzie
Porter who had also just swam the 200 Free Relay sets a new personal best time
dropping nearly 5 seconds for a strong 3rd place. Right behind McKenzie
is Winhawk Sophomore Abbey Quandahl out finishing the Scarlet next to her by 15
one hundredths for 4th place points and an 11-5 point differential.
Winona 73 Mankato West 83
The 100 Breaststroke sees Cotter Junior Alexandra Zuelke
swim to form bringing home the win a half a pool lead. The Scarlets are all
bunched together 7 seconds behind her and Cotter 8th Grader
Alexandra Arnold betters her best time by over 5 seconds to take the point for
5th.
Winona 80 Mankato West 92
The 400 Freestyle Relay was another All-Star line-up for
Mankato West. Coach Dave Burgess left nothing to chance repeating the Lohman, Bacon,
and the two Nack sisters combination. The Winhawks on the other hand had thrown
everything they could at the Scarlets earlier in the meet and couldn’t match
the Scarlets’ Big Guns. Mankato West goes 1-2 but only score a second place
finish under the Big 9 agreement to not let a score get lopsided.
