Tuesday night the Winona Winhawks (2-1, 1-1) slowly pulled
away from the Faribault Falcons (1-3, 0-3) until the meet was finally in hand
at the very end. The Winhawks proved to have a slightly deeper bench than the
Falcons, stretching their meager half way lead into a full event advantage by the
400 Free Relay. It was definitely the middle swimmers that performed well in
this meet and they deserve credit for the win. They made a good showing in front of new Winhawk Athletic Director Clark Jones who admitted that prior to this he had had little exposure to competitive swimming but was impressed with how exciting the atmosphere was.
The 200 Medley Relay saw the stronger Winhawks favored for 1st,
the question was where will relay entries 2 & 3 fall? Cotter Senior Mackenzie
Brosnahan, Cotter Junior Alexandra Zuelke, and Sophomores Reese Galewski and Haley
O’Neill easily handle the lead Falcon relay winning by 5 seconds. The “B” Relay
sees Freshman McKenzie Porter swim a personal best backstroke split followed by
Sophomore Greer Kosidowski matching her with her own personal best breaststroke
split. Handing off 3rd place to Bluffview 8th grader
Hanna O’Neill, she and Sophomore Abbey Quandahl both add to the lead for a big
win. Following on their heels, even the “C” Relay of Senior Co-Captain Kayla
Berg, Cotter 8th Grader Alex Arnold, and Juniors Ashlen Haines and Samantha Johnson get into the
act to relegate Faribault to the last two spots.

The 200 Freestyle was supposed to be a tough nut to crack
and Coach Burt threw Winhawk Sophomores Hailey O’Neill and McKenna Marg at the
Falcons to secure 2nd & 4th place and break up any
real point scoring by Faribault and put them back in the meet.
Winona 16 Faribault 14
The 200 IM was the first real blow to the Falcons as Coach
Burt called the right line-up at the right time. Cotter Senior Mackenzie
Brosnahan and Winhawk Sophomore Reese Galewski exploited a weak point and along
with Cotter 8th grader Alex Arnold place 1-2-4 for a huge 12-4 point
differential.
Winona 28 Faribault 18
The 50 Freestyle sees
the Winhawks give it their all as Cotter Jr. Alexandra Zuelke swims 2 one hundredths
off her personal best only to get touched out by 4 one hundredths of a second. Adding
help was Cotter Sophomore Emily Thurow who, swimming one one hundredth off her
personal best, places a secure 3rd.

Springboard diving over at the Middle School sees Winhawk
Junior Crystal Franzwa and Freshman Sarah Scherbring both score season highs to
place 2-5 and keep Winona in the lead.

In the 100 Butterfly, Winhawk Sophomore Reese Galewski out
classes the field winning by over 6 ½ seconds or nearly ¼ the length of the
pool/ Bluffview 8th Grader Hanna O’Neill announces her presence by
swimming a season low by 1 ½ seconds for second place. Completing the trifecta,
Winhawk Junior Samantha Johnson sets a new personal best time by a full second
to secure 4th place and another huge 11-5 point differential.

The 100 Freestyle was Cotter Senior Mackenzie Brosnahan’s
first of the season and she made the most of it. Coming up from the start
already in the lead, Kenzie stretched it out to win by over 1/3 of a lap.
Cotter Sophomore Emily Thurow placed 3rd and Sr. Co-Captain Kayla
Berg secured the final points to help extend the Winhawk lead.

The 500 Freestyle was a great race to watch, and an even
better race to be in. Knowing the Falcon had a couple good distance swimmers, Winhawk
Coach Steve Burt threw Sophomore Haley O’Neill in to try and break up the
points. But Faribault held back one swimmer and Haley had a secure 2nd place in
the bag. The great racing was for 3rd & 4th and for 5th&6th.
Winhawk Sophomore Greer Kosidowski was in a neck and neck battle for 18 lengths
of the pool, most of it in the lead only to be touched out by ½ a second at the
end to place 4th. Over in Lanes 1 and 2, Winhawk Sophomore Razil Campbell was having the race
of her 2011 season. Behind for 12 lengths, Razil kicked it down and took a
tenth of a second lead by the 14th length, from there on in she
opened it up and over the next 3 laps beat her adversary by a full 2 seconds. More
significant was that her time was a 15, yes 1 -5 second drop from her season
best to date. Nice race Razil!!! What appeared in the pre-meet assessment to be
a weak point turned out to be a near even split and kept the Falcons at bay.

The 200 Freestyle Relay was also expected to go the Winhawks’
way for first, but what of the other available points? The “A” Relay of Zuelke,
O’Neill, Thurow and Brosnahan make short work of first, but the “B” Relay of
Porter, Quandahl, Arnold and O’Neill bring home the points for 3rd
place to distance the Winhawks from the Falcons even further.
Winona 78 Faribault 62
The 100 Backstroke was a matter of managing damages. The Falcons’
Ceila Hake was expected to be entered and own the heat. Winhawks’ Coach Burt
enters Cotter Sophomore McKenna Marg for her first 100 Back entry of the season and
she places a solid second. The icing on the cake were the 3rd place
finish of Winhawk Freshman McKenzie Porter swimming to a personal best followed
right behind by Winhawk Sophomore Abbey Quandahl placing 4th. The two of them nearly putting the Falcons’
hopes on ice for good.
Winona 87 Faribault 69
The 100 Breaststroke
was the epitome of slamming the door shut on the Falcons. Cotter Junior
Alexandra Zuelke dominated the event as expected, winning in a season low time.
Doing the real damage were Winhawk Sophomore Greer Kosidowski and Cotter 8th
Grader Alexandra Arnold. Greer swims the 100 Breast for the first time this
season and secures the 3rd place points while Alex is right behind
her for 4th and the Falcons are mathematically eliminated from
contention.
