This is my blog that follows swimming & diving in Winona MN and those Winonans that have left to swim elsewhere. Occasionally I will post items of info related to swimming & diving in general.

Winona looking to avenge their dual meet loss to Holmen last year.

The Winhawk/Holmen border battle returns to the West side of the Mississippi this year. In the end, this year’s results may look very similar to last year’s as neither team graduated many swimmers and both have up and coming young swimmers. Holmen finished 5th at last year’s 2012 WIAA Girls Division 1 Sectional in Hudson, and most of those swimmers are back.

Comparing last year’s Section times, the two teams match up VERY close. This will be a GREAT meet to watch, tell your friends, your neighbors, even your in-laws, this is one meet you DO NOT WANT TO MISS!!!

Holmen’s 200 Medley relay of Vada Williams JR, Kelsey Linzmeyer SO, Marlee Pronschinske JR and Allison Carlisle SR are all back this season. These four Holmen swimmers are the core of the team but they have a supporting cast. They were a second behind the Winhawks last year but the Winhawks lost State Breaststroke Qualifier Alexandra Zuelke so they will have a slightly different look.

200 Yard Freestyle
Last year  the Sophomore Marlee Pronschinske took first, her time ended up being her seed time for Sections so Winhawk Sr. Co-captain pushed her hard last year and will need to repeat that effort here! Holmen Sophomore Merissa Larson was in 3rd last year, someone will need to step and challenger her as well.

200 Yard IM
Holmen’s Morgan Petersen JR Holmen is a 2:30 swimmer but may be accompanied by Kelsey Linzmeyer SO, who is sub 2:20 and also a 1:00 butterflyer.

50 Yard Freestyle
Holmen’s Allison Carlisle SR is not anchor on the medley for no reason, she won the 50 in last year’s match-up with a 24 high and there is no reason to believe she is not quicker.

Diving – Holmen has no divers and the event was not scored last year. Look for the 13 points Diving contributes this year to make a big difference.

100 Yard Butterfly
The Winhawks may see either SO Kelsey Linzmeyer or Marlee Pronschinske       maybe both! Pronschinske took the win last year with less than a half second to spare over Winhawk Sr. Co-Captain Reese Galewski and this will prove to be a great rematch. Holmen has a good second in SO Molly Trannel so the Winhawks need some back-up to Reese as well.

100 Yard Freestyle
Last year Sr. Co-Captain Haley O’Neill got the better of Holmen’s Allison Carlisle in this rematch of the 200 FR, she’ll be looking to retain that crown. Homen’s JR Vada Williams was 3rd last year in the 50 but did not swim the 100, look for her to be present this year.

500 Yard Freestyle
Holmen’s So. Merissa Larson  won this last year in a hard duel with Sr. Co-Captain Reese Galewski. Her winning time was her Section Seed so Reese gave her all she could handle. The Winhawks will have to commit a sub six minute swimmer if they want to contend here.

200 Yard Freestyle Relay
Last year’s 4x50 went to Winona, both squads using some of their younger swimmers, saving veterans for head to head match-ups.

100 Yard Backstroke
Last year went to Holmen’s Vada Williams touching out Winhawk SO. Morgan Whyte by less than 2 tenths. Morgan may have something to say about that this year. Holmen’s Jr. Morgan Petersen will be right behind them, Winona needs a 1:10 – 1:13 swim out of someone.

100 Yard Breaststroke
Last year Holmen’s Kelsey Linzmeyer was taken to school by now graduated Winona Co-Captain Alex Zuelke. She will be looking to be on top this year, Winhawk Sr. Greer Kosidowski will need to show her that the seat is not vacant.

400 Yard Freestyle Relay
Last year Holmen saved their big guns for the 4x100 and the Winhawks were depleted of entries. Holmen swam four sub minute hundreds to win going away.
