This is my blog that follows swimming & diving in Winona MN and those Winonans that have left to swim elsewhere. Occasionally I will post items of info related to swimming & diving in general.

Boy, if you weren’t watching you should be sorry, but you get one more chance.
If you are into swimming and did not watch the NCAA Division I Championships either in person or on-line, you missed something big! It was one of the great sports events I have attended with drama, excitement, and athletic achievement. What made it more special is that I got to be on deck for the entire meet with a (literally) front row seat). What differs from the club swimming experience is that team is what NCAA’s is about. Much like other sports, coaches will place their qualified swimmers where they will best place the team for scoring, individually and in relays. Swimmer & diver wins translate into points. A swimmer placing 8th in an individual event may score 9 points, but save that swimmer to be fresh for the right relay and it could mean 20 or even 40 points. Every event was hotly contested with swimmers side-by-side whether it was the diving, 50 Free, 1650 free or any of the relays. There is a lot of parity in NCAA swimming and diving and the score reflected it. There were 50 teams present at the Championships, 37 of them scored.
The meet title came down to the last relay, as it should. When the water smoothed, California won its first title in 31 years followed by defending champion Texas.
The host Minnesota Golden Gophers kept their streak alive placing 15th having placed in that position or better for the last 20 years. It took an 8 place finish in the 400 Free Relay to leapfrog past Louisville and Purdue( who scored all of their 88 points from the diving events).
The meet is spread out over 3 days to cover all the different event length and heights that take place. Preliminaries are held in the afternoon with the top 16 swimmers and 8 divers progressing on to the finals in the evening.
For in-depth coverage go to: http://www.collegeswimming.com/
The meet will be aired on ESPN on April 6th, 12:30PM CST.

All the Speedsters are headed to Minneapolis, do you have your tickets?
The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers are hosts for the 2011 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships THIS WEEKEND.
The “Fastest Swim Meet in the World” was last here in 2005, so one can expect that it may be another 6 years before it returns. With typical venues like Indiana last year, as well as Texas, California, and Georgia, you may never get this close again for a long time.
They call it the “Fastest Swim Meet in the World” because the competition is at the 25 yard length. So with yards being shorter than meters and for this level of competition, time are subsequently much faster than the USA Nationals or Olympics.
Which is where many of these collegiate swimmers and divers are headed after this meet is done. Before they return to their schools next fall, many have a date with history. Next summer the Olympic Swimming Trials will be held in Omaha Nebraska in June and the 2012 London Olympics start late July.
On top of the fast swimming, many of these NCAA divers will be competing to make our Olympic Team as well. One already has, Purdue’s David Boudia, a 2008 Olympian in Platform diving will be in attendance and is favored after dominating the Zone Qualifying to get to NCAA’s. At the Big 10 Championships held recently at the U of MN, Boudia set new Big Ten & Pool records in all 3 diving events. One dive off the 3 Meter springboard scored him 6 10’s and a 9.5!
So this Thursday - Saturday if you can’t be on deck like some people I know, I would surely look to be in the stands. You may not see the chance again for some time to come!

Start with hard work, some planning, add some attitude and you get National Championships, accolades and the highest finish ever.
The Minnesota Gopher Women’s Swimming & Diving Team enjoyed its best finish at the national championship meet ever finishing in ninth place and scoring the most points at NCAAs in Gopher history with 192.
The Gophers produced 3 National Champions out of the 21 different events, the 1 meter diving, (Kelci Bryant). The 100 Yard Breaststroke (Jillian Tyler) and the 200 Yard Breaststroke (Haley Spencer).
Topping off the meet, Bryant was named the CSCAA Diver of the Championships after winning the 1-meter diving national title and adding national runner-up honors on the 3-meter springboard. Her Coach, Wenbo Chen received CSCAA Diving Coach of the Championships. Chen coached both Bryant and freshman Maggie Keefer to All-America honors at the 2011 Championships. Keefer competed in all three diving events, earning All-America Honorable Mention acclaim with an 11th-place finish in 1-meter diving.

Talk about future prospects
At the National Club Swimming Association (NCSA) Junior Nationals this weekend, MN Aquajet and Eden Prairie Junior Rachael Bootsma wins the 100 Yard Backstroke with a 50.76 time, the 2nd fastest American 100 yard backstroke ever.
Last Fall at the MN State HS Meet, Bootsma took the National High School 100 Back record from Cindy Tran (now swimming for University of California Berkley). On Friday after Bootsma’s swim where she blew away the field, her time was over a half a second faster than Tran’s winning time later that same day at the Women’s NCAA Division I Swimming Championships.
