Winhawks swimmers learn early in the season what they are up against

The Winona Winhawk boys went to Rochester Thursday to see how they stacked up against one of the Conference’s best, Rochester Century.

When the water had smoothed out, the Winhawks had a good idea of the amount of work that lies ahead between now and February. The Winhawks saw just three wins on the Meet. Sr. Captain Ryan Whalen swam to victory in both the 50 yard Freestyle and 100 Backstroke; Diver Stan Petkov took first in the One Meter diving event.

The 200 Medley Relay was a great battle going neck and neck all the way through. Led off by Sr. Captain Ryan Whalen, his backstroke leg had Sr. Santino LaPorta starting his breastroke in the lead. The next exchange saw 8th gr. Roger Brosnahan going head to head the Jr. Flyer from Century and battled him well. Jr. Louie LaPorta anchored swimming his fastest 50 split yet of the season, and eth Winhawks finished a solid 2nd, only 0.5 seconds behind Century.

The 200 Freestyle saw Winhawk Sr. Josh Danzinger finish 3rd followed by Sophomores Joey Kleinow and Avery Prondzinski.

The 200 IM was the same, Century swimming 1-2 with Winhawk Sr. Matt Bagshaw swimming his season best followed by 8th gr. Cal Dretske.

The 50 Freestyle was a win for Sr. Captain Ryan Whalen swimming a very fast 23.80. 8th gr Roger Brosnahan swam his best 50 event of the season, at 24.68 followed by Jr. Gio Borsari at 27.17 with So. Alex Kline swimming a season’s best in the JV Heat at 29.05 followed by Mic Borsari in 39.35.

The Diving was won by Jr. Stan Petkov with a season high 137.20 behind the strength of his Forward 2 ½ ss T and Forward 1ss with 1 Twist.

The 100 Butterfly is a strength event and this season to date has been owned by Winhawk Sr. Matt Bagshaw. He improved his season high by a full 2+ seconds touching in 1:10.79

The 100 Freestyle was as predicted pitting Century’s Jr. Speedster Chris Freeman against the young Winhawk 8th gr. Roger Brosnahan. Roger stayed close through the 50, and also saw Winhawk Jr. Louie LaPorta rising to the occasion staying right with Brosnahan. As they neared the 75 Century pulled away with Roger taking 3rd but dropping over a second and a half. Louie followed up with a great 57.26.

The Winhawk 200 Free Relay of Danzinger, L. LaPorta, Brosnahan and Whalen was outgunned but swam a solid 2nd in 1:41.17.

The 100 Back was a showcase for Winhawk Sr. Ryan Whalen and he coasted to a 1st place win in 1:00. 70. So. Avery Prondzinski had a good outing himself as the second highest placing Winhawk touching in 1:09.42.

The 100 Breaststroke saw Winhawk Sr. Santino LaPorta finish 3rd in 1:10.33 followed by up and coming Winhawk 8th grader Cal Dretske in 1:13.91 for fourth.

Winhawks travel to Rochester to test Century

The Winona Winhawks hit the road today for an away swim meet vs Rochester Century at the Rochester Mayo pool.

Rochester Century is said to be one of the teams to watch in the Big 9 Title race. That being said, it appears on paper that the Winhawks can test them in a number of events. Starting right with the 200 Medley Relay, it could shape up to be a good race if the team of Sr. Ryan Whalen, Sr. Santino LaPorta, 8th grader Roger Brosnahan and Jr. Louie LaPorta are on their game right out of the chute.

Century’s Alan Cox swims a 1:50 200 Free and it will be interesting to see who gets to try and upset him.

The 200IM will hopefully feature Century’s John Cima vs Ryan Whalen and will be a great race to watch! They should seed within tenths of seconds of each other.

The 50 Freestyle will showcase the current speed and potential of Winhawk 8th grader Roger Brosnahan. It will be fun to watch who Century throws at him as a counter.

One of the GREAT things about going to away meets is getting to watch diving as the pool at Mayo HAS diving boards! Divers Justin Bublitz, Stan Petkov and Dan Karnick actualy get to dive in front of a real crowd! Under first year coach Josh Bublitz the guys are making good progress, firming up current dives and throwing some new ones in practice working to up their list DD (degree of difficulty). Look for Justin to score big points on his Forward 1 1/2 ss in the Pike position and his Forward 1 1/2 ss with one twist in the Free position. Stan will be looking to his Forward 2 1/2 ss in the Tuck position and Forward 1 ss 1 twist in Free to place him high in the results. Dan has been consistant in his diving and will continue down that path as he ups his DD as we get closer to the 11 dive part of the season.

Century’s Cox will most likely return to swim the 100Fly sub 1 minute challenging the Winhawk chosen to chase him down.

The 100 Free will showcase Century’s Chris Freeman who swims a 50 second freestyle. Winhawk Roger Brosnahan will have his hands full.

The 500 Freestyle will have Winhawk Senior Josh Danzinger looking to step up against Century’s Chris Tri who swims a 5 minute plus.

The 200 Free Relay will be a tough one, many of the aforementioned Century swimmers are quick in the 50.

The 100 Back will be a chance for Winhawk Senior Ryan Whalen to showcase his speed in a non-freestyle event and a possible win for the Winhawks.

The 100 Breaststroke will push Winhawk Sr. Louie LaPorta. LaPorta has shown great improvement thus far in the season and another step up the ladder will be required in tonight’s meet against Century’s Andrew Grosbach.

The 400 Free Relay will also be a showcase of Century’s depth and a major challenge for the Winhawks.

Winhawk So. Joey Kleinow took 2nd and joined the Minuteman Club winning in 58.79 seconds. Winona So. Avery Prondzinski maxed out the Winhawks possible points taking 3rd in 1:00.66.

Score, Albert Lea 44, Winona Winhawks 91

The 100 Backstroke saw Winhawk Sr. Ryan Whalen swim to 1st in a 57.71, only 1.8 seconds off of the State qualifying time in this the first meet of the season. Winhawk Jr. Louie LaPorta finished a solid 3rd in 1:09.72.

Score, Albert Lea 57, Winona Winhawks 91

The 100 Breaststroke was a Winona 1-2-3 finish. Winhawk Sr. Santino LaPorta swimming like a guy making up for lost time finished first in a quick 1:08.55. 8th Grader Cal Dretske swam his all time best taking 2nd in 1:12.62 and Jr. Gio Borsari finished the WInhawk sweep with a 1:36.38 and 3rd place.

Winhawk Boys hit the blocks for the 2009 Season

This week marks the final point of the Winhawk Girls’ season with their season end party, and the kick-off of the Boys’ Swim Season with their first meet on Thursday against Albert Lea followed by the Tiger Relays in Albert Lea on Saturday.

There are 22 swimmers and divers on the Boys’ roster, more would be nice but it is great to see them all out. Head Coach Amy Schulz in her 2nd season at the helm of the Boys’ Team is looking to make a second straight trip to State. She will be backed up by Asst Coach Steve Burt (a role reversal from their work on the girls’ program) and first year Diving Coach Josh Bublitz.

The roster is comprised of 6 Seniors, 6 Juniors, 6 Sophomores, 1 Freshman and 3 8th graders.

Alex Kline 10
Alex Vaslow 8
Avery Prondzinski 10
Cal Dretzke 8
Dakota Carlson 12
Daniel Karnick 10
Dong Zhao 10
Eric Mueller 11
Gio Borsari 11
Joey Kleinow 10
Jonathan Birdsall 12
Joshua Danzinger 12
Justin Bublitz 11
Louie LaPorta 11
Lun Li 10
Matthew Bagshaw 12
Mic Borsari 9
Nathan Graetz 11
Roger Brosnahan 8
Ryan Whalen 12
Santino LaPorta 12
Stan Petkov 11

Look for traditional strength in the Freestyle events out of Senior Ryan Whalen. Also watch for newcomer 8th Grader Roger Brosnahan to make his presence known early. After this first week the Big 9 conference will find out who he is in a big way. With Travis Bernardy graduating last year the Winhawks will be looking for someone to fill the opening in the IM and Breaststroke. Look for Newcomer 8th grader Cal Dretske to make noise in the IM right away. Veteran Juniors Nathan Graetz and Louie LaPorta Should also provide some scoring in the Breaststroke and Backstroke respectively. Diving should be fun to watch, Junior Justin Bublitz will be working hard to make the trip to State this year and Junior Stan Petkoy should be providing some decent points this season as well. Returning Senior swimmers Joshua Danzinger (Distance), Mathew Bagshaw and Jonathan Birdsall will help to provide leadership as the newer Winhawks start to learn the ropes.

Winona Swim Club performs well at the Northfield December Dazzler

Last weekend the Wolner brothers were representing the Winona Swim Club in the 2009 NORTHFIELD December Dazzler BC OPEN and they did not disappoint.

The meet was at the Northfield Middle School, and the swim club from Northfield puts on a great meet. Shannon Wolner was raving about how pleasant and helpful they were. The pool is 8 lanes and there is a nice grandstand for parents to watch from. Shannon though was on deck as the coaching representative for the WSC.

Grant Wolner swam the 100Free, the 50 Breast and the 50 Fly. His 100 Freestyle saw him swim a 1:45.46 good for 4th place and an awesome 5 ½ second improvement over his previous best time. Next up he swam the 50 Breaststroke in a new personal best of 1:01.19 and placing 2nd overall, which is his first medal event since he started training. Congratulations Grant!

Griffin swam the 50 Backstroke in 41.44 seconds, good for 5th place and a new personal best time by 1.3 seconds. Next up was his 50 Breaststroke in which his 44.96 seconds was also a 5th place finish and another personal best with a 3+ second drop. Grif finished out the day with a 100 Freestyle swim of 1:14.72 seconds. This was not only good for a 4th place finish, but he pulled the Trifecta improving another personal best on his third and final swim by nearly 2 seconds.

Congratulations Grant and Griffin. Thanks for representing the Winona Swim Club so well at the Northfield December Dazzler!!

Interviews of all the Big Swimming Names

In case you were busy focusing on the up comingThanksgiving meal & break, but USA Swimming held its anual Golden Goggle Awards.

Ryan Lochte beat out superstars to be named Male swimmer of the year Sunday at USA Swimming's Golden Goggles awards.

Rebecca Soni nabbed female swimmer of the year honors, while Michael Phelps, who earned a leading six nominations, was honored for delivering the men's race of the year and for a world championship relay performance.

Lochte ended MichaelPhelps' two-year reign as male swimmer of the year, thanks to world record-setting triumphs in the 200m individual medley and 4x200m freestyle relay at the world championships in Rome.

In a true testament that competition drives development, Lochte said. "Aaron Peirsol and Michael Phelps, you guys have pushed me to limits I didn't even know, and I wouldn't be here without you."

Lochte also shared the relay performance of the year award, for the 4x100m free relay in Rome in which he, Phelps, Matt Grevers and Nathan Adrian defeated Russia as favorites France flopped.

Phelps was honored for his 100m butterfly triumph in Rome. He passed right through the 50-second barrier with a time of 49.82sec and handed Milorad Cavic a bigger defeat than the Beijing Olympics.

If you want to see or share with friends or your kids what som eof teh USA swimming stars look like in something other than suits and goggles, watch their interviews on the red carpet. Go to   http://www.swimnetwork.com/event/detail/20091027/2009_golden_goggles-2375.html

Back at it after the Thanksgiving Week Slowdown

So I took a few weeks off. It was Thanksgiving and I got caught up on some other stuff going on. It is typically slow around a holiday for swim teams, we usually just work out during the Thanksgiving and Christmas Breaks unlike other sports.

The Winhawk Girls’ season is over, the Boy’s just started practicing. Area colleges are still in the throws of their long season and there are major meets going on with USA Swimming. The Local Clubs are at it as well, The USA Wizards and the YMCA Winfins.

This past weekend, The Winona USA Wizards team was in action at the Northfield December Dazzler meet. Grif and Grant Wolner were in attendance. I will report on results shortly, but I was informed that Grant medaled in the meet for the first time in his short career, congratulations Grant!

In the colleges, The University of MN Men & Women traveled to Ohio to swin an Invite against Big Ten rivals Ohio State University, and Penn State University, as well as West Virginia University, University of Miami, the University OF Pittsburgh.

The rest of the local colleges including Mankato, UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire were ALL converged on the University of MN Aquatic Center for the UW River Falls – River Falls Invite.
