Rochester Century comes a calling to Winona in a Big 9 Dual meet contest

Undefeated and perennial Big 9 powerhouse Rochester Century (2-0, 2-0) will come to test the undefeated Winona Winhawks (3-0, 2-0) Thursday night.

Century, having had their way with Albert Lea and Austin so far this season, has just 3 seniors on their roster this year but they are all heavyweights. In last year’s Section 1AA meet, Century’s Clair Anderson finished 2^nd in the 200 Freestyle and won the 100 Butterfly. Jennifer Storm placed 6^th in the 200IM and won the 100 Breaststroke, and Laura Hocraffer was a Consolation Finalist in the 100 Butterfly. Both Storm and Anderson we part of the 2^nd place 200 Medley Relay.  There is additional depth in the underclasswomen, Sophomore Moriah Mercill is a quality IM’er, Sophomore Lydia Stiving is an up and coming Freestyler already posting a 2:06 200 FR this year.

Some great match-ups to watch if the line-ups fall into place:

The 200 Medley Relay will be closely contested and set a great tone for the evening. Winona is posting sub1:58’s and Century has a 1:59 & 1:57 to their credit.

The 50 Free allows little room for the swimmers to separate themselves so it is always fun to watch. Sr. Co-Captain Bridget Bawek will need a great start to hold off Century Freshman Christina Drexler.

Although those of us at the WSHS pool won’t get to see diving, Winona’s Sophomore Crystal Franzwa should take the diving competition. If they have a good night, the other Winona Divers, 9th Grader Janelle Mueller, 8^th Grader Sarah Scherbring and Sophomore Megan Seeley could bring some very important points back to the WSHS pool with them!

The 100 Butterfly should be an awesome contest. Winhawk Freshman Reese Galewski has been having an outstanding last few weeks and will give Century Sophomore Nina Tabatabai and Sr. Jennifer Strom a good run.

The 200 Free Relay could be a source of good points for the Winhawks. Posting a couple of 1:46’s so far, the last one a low 1:46. Century has been at 1:47 in both their meets.

The 100 Back and 10 Breast are strong suits for the Century Swimmers and the Winhawks will need to dig deep.

 The 400 Free Relay may be the last line in the sand. Or either team could have it put away by then. If it is in play, it will be a great race!

Saturday, the Apple Valley Relays and the Edina Hornets and Minnetonka Skippers, YIKES!

Thanks for the correction on my prior post AND looking forward to this week's swims.

A devoted reader pointed out a few relay line-up errors. Due to work commitments I was sorely disappointed not to make the trip to Albert Lea.

I was able to piece together the blog post from multiple sources, but some I have to literally piece together.

Invaluable are the statistics and record keeping by Jan & Paul Brosnahan. They put a lot of work into assimilating each meet's results into their data base and providing them to the coaching staff. When you see them at the next meet or team event, thank them profusely, I know I do!

This week is a very competitive  week, prepare your girls accordingly. School, workout and rest will be the order of business as the girls encounter  Rochester Century AND the trip to the Twin Cities for the Apple Valley Invitational.

Rochester Century sits atop the leader board with Winona at 2-0 in the conference (along with Faribault and Rochester JM). Century has encountered Albert Lea and Austin so far, so they will try to make the Winhawks the next step up the ladder.

The Apple Valley Invitational will include both Edina (2nd at State last year) and Minnetonka (3rd at State last year).

Edina just swam the MPLS South Girls Invite at the U of MN ( Winona chose not to attend being a Friday all day event AND a 6AM departure after getting home from Albert Lea at 11PM the night before). Edina finished 2nd behind defending State Champion Stillwater.

Minnetonka finished 3rd at the Eau Claire  Invite on Aug 28th against some tough Wisc competition and 3rd in their own invite yesterday behind Wayzata (4th at State last Year) and Eden Prairie (5th at State last year) and just ahead of Maple Grove (7th at State last year)

 Wayzata 612.5, Eden Prairie (361), Minnetonka (302) and Maple Grove (284) Prior Lake (245.5), Cretin-Derham Hall (211), followed by Chanhassen (109), Hopkins (101) and Grand Rapids and Chaska (48).

Minnetonka will swim against Wayzata (again) in a dual meet Thursday while Edina will battle Eden Prairie that same night. Both will come into Apple Valley a little tired OR ready to kick some butt.

Winona Winhawk Girls too deep for the Tigers

The Winhawk Girls’ Swimmers & Divers trekked to Albert Lea for a Big 9 Dual meet Thursday Night.

The Albert Lea Tigers are a young squad and had fewer bodies to draw from than the more experienced Winona Winhawks. Add up those two factors and the Winhawks walked out of the Albert Lea pool with a third win under their belt.

Winona won all but one event, and dominated the relays for a comfortable lead by the 100 Breaststroke event. Making the evening even more notable was Head Coach Steve Burt switching up a lot of event entries, placing his Winhawks in events they typically don’t race.

The Winhawk Medley relay of Senior Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl, Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke, Freshman Reese Galewski and Sr. Co-Captain Bridget Bawek set the meet tone right out of the gate. Their 1:57.99 not only left the Tigers behind; it moved this group of girls up the list to the fastest in 5 seasons and the 6^th fastest Winhawk Medley Relay ever.

The 200 Freestyle was a hard fought race wire to wire. Swimming a rare 200 Freestyle, breaststroke and IM standout Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke turned in the second fastest Winhawk time in two years but was touched out by 15 hundredths for the win. Typically a Sprinter, Haley O’Neill turned in a solid performance to bring home 3^rd place. Freshman Greer Kosidowski improved by a second and a half on her best time to score for the Winhawks in 5^th.

The 200 Individual Medley event was all Winhawk Freshman Reese Galewski. She swam her best 200 IM ever taking 1^st with body lengths to spare. Bluffview 7^th Grader Hanna O’Neill showed real determination touching out her Tiger foe by a mere one second for 4^th place and an even split of event points.

The 50 Free Style was another entry switch up with Coach Burt placing Cotter Jr. MacKenzie Brosnahan in the 2 length dash for the first time all season. Kenzie didn’t disappoint him taking first with room to spare. Her 24.90 was the fastest 50 Free in 2 ½ years for the Winhawks. Scoring good points right behind her were Sr. Taylor Johnson in 3^rd and just touching out the Tiger chasing her, Cotter 8^th Grader Morgan Whyte in 4^th.

Diving continued the Winhawks’ winning ways with Crystal Franzwa going back above the 200 point barrier. Her 202.65 had plenty of room after the Tiger’s Karli Kriewall had a failed dive in attempting her Reverse 1 1/2ss. Winhawks Janelle Mueller and Megan Seeley combined for 3^rd and 5^th respectively

The 100 Yard Butterfly pretty much put the Winhawks in the driver’s seat.  Winhawk Freshman Reese Galewski won her second individual event of the evening while swimming another personal best time. Her 1:02.43 solidified her hold on the 5^th fastest Winhawk 100 fly ever! Senior Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl scored a solid 2^nd place with two body lengths to spare and young Bluffview 7^th Grader Hanna O’Neill bested the final two Tigers for 4^th and a huge 12-4 event point score for the Winhawks!

The 100 Freestyle, the other splash and dash of the evening was a return sprint trip for Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan. Her winning 53.87 was only a hair off her 3^rd fastest Winhawk time ever of 53.42 and good for a standout win. Sr. Co-Captain Bridget Bawek  was touched out and placed 3^rd swimming her fastest of the season so far and Cotter 8^th Grader Morgan Whyte finished the scoring placing a solid 4^th well ahead of the final two Tigers.

The 500 Freestyle entries continue to resemble a revolving door for the Winhawks as different ‘Hawks enter it each meet. This time the normally sprinting Freshman Haley O’Neill was sent to the blocks by Head Coach Steve Burt and she did not disappoint. It was a hard fought, neck and neck, just a hair behind, 6 minute long battle. After 19 lengths of the pool, Haley surged at the end to touch out the Tiger’s Morgan Field by 0.07 seconds. Cotter Jr. Grace Ell also swimming distance for the first time this year brought home the points for 4^th place and another 8-8 event point split.

The 200 Free Relay continued tipping the points scale in favor of the Winhawks. Albert Lea had stacked their relay hoping to put a stop to the Winhawks scoring streak. Thus inspired, the A relay of Sr. Taylor Johnson, Sr. Co-Captain Bridget Bawek, Freshman Haley O'Neill, and Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan, took charge and finished nearly 2 seconds ahead of the Tigers. Their 1:46.07 cumulative splashes moved them up the All time Winhawk swim list from 11^th to 8^th place. Making their presence known as well, the 2^nd Winhawk relay of Cotter 7^th Grader Morgan Whyte, Cotter Freshman Emily Thurow, Cotter 7^th Grader Alex Arnold, and Cotter Jr. Grace Ell swim a solid 1:58.58 to edge out the Tigers B Relay by more than two seconds.

The 100 Backstroke was the final brush stroke of a well painted victory. A 1-2 finish by Sr. Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl and Cotter Freshman McKenna Marg kicked the meet scoring into “Big 9 Exhibition rules”.  The Winhawks had the 96 points necessary to win the contest.

The 100 Breaststroke was more of the same with Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke, Senior Taylor Johnson and Freshman Greer Kosidowski going for a solid performance and 1-3-5 finish. In spite of knowing the meet was in the bag Johnson gave the lead Tiger swimmer all she could handle getting touched out at the end.

The 400 Free Relay is the final race of the night and sets a tone for the ride home. Already won or not, the girls are going to go out and have fun AND bring home a win if they have any say in it. Sr. Co-Captains Bridget Bawek and Samantha Quandahl with Fr. Reese Galewski teamed with Cotter Jr. MacKenzie Brosnahan on the A relay. Albert Lea had already thrown every thing they could at the Winhawks earlier in the meet and had few bodies left to compete. The Winhawk A relay won by nearly 2 lengths of the pool in 4:03.17. The Winhawk B relay was equally formidable made up of the Cotter threesome of 8^th Grader Morgan Whyte, Freshmen McKenna Marg and Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke joined by Freshman Haley O'Neill, they too beat out the Tiger A relay taking 2^nd in 4:21.45.

Winhawk Girls make the trek to Albert Lea

Winona Winhawks (2-0) have a long trip to Albert Lea (0-1), and it may be a hard trip as well.

Albert Lea resembles the Winhawks of last year, only one senior and only half the squad in high school. But they also resemble them as having some very talented youngsters.

If you are on the fence about making the trek to the Tiger Pool, you might miss out on a heck of a swim meet!

Albert Lea is 0-1 after losing their season opener to Rochester Century 99-80. Don’t be deceived by the score. Century, due to their numbers, may have won by attrition. Albert Lea had six girls swim excellent times , 7th Grader Lindsey Horejsi in the 200 free and the 500 free, 9th Grader Hannah Hertling in the 100 breaststroke, Sophomore Kemma Bergland in the 100 free and 100 backstroke, Juniors Morgan Field in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, Galen Schulz in the 50 free and 100 free and senior Amy Horejsi in the 50 free and 100 butterfly. Against Century they won the 200IM, the 100 Free in 58.63, and the 100 Breaststroke. Their lead diver won as well, Sophomore Karli Kriewall with a score of 178.25.

The Winhawks will have to be on their game to pull this one out. The depth of their squad and the relay results will be the key to winning what appears to be a tough dual meet.

A sub 2:00 minute 200 Medley relay out of Senior Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl, Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke, Freshman Reese Galewski and Freshman Hailey O’Neil will be a necessity. Watch right behind them for the second relay of Cotter Freshman McKenna Marg, Senior Taylor Johnson, Bluffview 7th Grader Hanna O'Neill, and Cotter Freshman Emily Thurow trying to get the additional 2 points, we’ll need them!

The 50 & 100 Free events, usually a strong suit for the Winhawks will require perfect executions by the likes of Senior Co-Captain Bridget Bawek and Freshman Haley O’Neil.

It is at Albert Lea so guess what, WE GET TO SEE DIVING! It will be a good show and look for Winhawk Crystal Franzwa to dig deep and win the battle of the Sophomores.

The 500 Freestyle is anyone's guess. Possibly Senior Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl will get the tap on the shoulder again joined by Freshman Gabby Kleinow and 8th Grader McKenzie Porter. The event is a definite vulnerability in the Big 9 conference, most teams are cranking out fast young distance swimmers.

The 200 Free Relay of Sr. Taylor Johnson, Sr. Bridget Bawek, Freshman Haley O'Neill, and Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan will need to swim a season best AGAIN to get the 8 points. As in prior meets, the second Winhawk relay of Cotter 7th Grader Morgan Whyte, Cotter Freshman Emily Thurow, Cotter 7th Grader Alex Arnold, and Freshman Gabby Kleinow getting the additional 2 points could be critical.

100 Backstroke could be one of those events where the Winhawks score some heavily needed points. But who will coach Burt hold out to save for this event?

100 Breastroke will put some pressure on Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke and Senior Taylor Johnson to dig deep depending on what the score is at this point.

Last but not least, the 400 Free Relay could decide it all. Senior Co-Captain Bridget Bawek, Freshman Reese Galewski, Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan and anchor Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke will have to duplicate their performances of the prior meets to possibly put the Winhawks over the top against the home town Tigers 400 Free relay team of Lindsey Horejsi, Mady Dahl, Whitney Rasmussen and Kemma Bergland.

Winhawks make it 2-0 on the 2010 season.

Thursday afternoon provided an opportunity for far away Mankato West to come swim against our own Winona Winhawk Girls Swimming & Diving team.

Being early in the season, both the Mankato West Scarlets (0-1) and the Winona Winhawks (1-0) are sorting out their rosters and capabilities. Add that the two teams don’t swim dual meets against each other often, and the coaches are flying in the dark regarding events and match-ups. Suffice it to say Winona’s Head Coach Steve Burt new of Mankato standout Danielle Nack, and Mankato’s Dave Burgess was well aware of MacKenzie Brosnahan and Alexandra Zuelke. I am sure it is a nice feeling for a coach when you come into an away pool and look at the record board to see what is there for the taking. After that, dual meets are about match-ups, and putting your talent where the opponent’s talent isn’t, trying to amass points where they make the biggest impact. You can take 1st in every individual event in swimming and still lose the meet. Both Coaches knew that this would be a” too close to call meet”, and would depend on match-ups and the quality of the swims based on condition and level of rest. Tuesday night, the Winhawks won every event and won handily. This afternoon, the results will be more mixed and the all important middle finishes for points will determine the outcome.

The 200 Medley Relay had the Winhawk JV set the tone going 1&3, won by Sophomore Emily Krause, Senior Melanie Jones McMillan, Sophomore Samantha Johnson, and Freshman Morgan Crowson. In the Varsity Heat, The Winhawks also went 1-3 with a convincing 7 second of margin win by the relay of Senior Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl, Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke, Freshman Reese Galewski and Freshman Hailey O’Neil.

The 200 Freestyle started out right with a Winhawk JV win, Freshman Greer Kosidowski won convincingly with a half a pool lead. The Varsity event was a great match-up pitting standout Scarlet Danielle Nack against the Winhawks’ anchor MacKenzie Brosnahan. As suggested earlier, winning isn’t everything and the Winhawks pulled out a point victory taking 2-3-4. Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan was immediately followed in the standings in a rare Freestyle appearance by Freshman Reese Galewski and the astonishing Cotter 7th Grader Morgan Whyte finishing ahead of a Mankato Senior & Junior respectively.

The 200 IM was a key win for the Winhawks. Mankato could have caught up to the Winhawks score, but placing Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke in the event for the body length win relegated the Scarlets to 2nd & 3rd. Winona 8th grader McKenzie Porter and Cotter Freshman McKenna Marg added points going 4th & 5th.

The 50 Freestyle is a high point and has both swimmers and the fans hyped up in pre-race cheering. The Winona JV set the tone for the Varsity going 1-3-4. Cotter 7th Grader Alexandra Arnold took a convincing win in 29.99 followed by Freshman Morgan Crowson and Junior Samantha Berg. The Varsity event was a head to head race the entire two lengths with the win margin only 0.03 seconds. Taking the majority of the points again, the Winhawks finish 2-3-4 with Senior Co-Captain Bridget Bawek leading Freshman Haley O’Neil and Senior Taylor Johnson to help add to the Winhawk lead.

With the Diving being at the Middle School, it was not evident until late in the meet that they too were contributing to the lead. They won both the JV and the Varsity with Sophomore Megan Seeley finishing way ahead of the pack in the JV event and Sophomore Crystal Franzwa and Freshman Janelle Mueller finishing 1-3 respectively in the Varsity event.

The 100 Butterfly saw Scarlet speedster Nack reappear. Winhawk Freshman Reese Galewski took chase and finished in a new personal best taking 2nd in 1:03.51 and moving herself up two notches to holding the 5th fastest Winhawk 100 butterfly ever! Right on her heels was Senior Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl to keep the point spread even at 8-8.

The 100 Freestyle was again set up by the JV, Cotter Freshman Emily Thurow and Sophomore Samantha Johnson go 1-2 with Junior Kayla Berg bring home a 4th. The Varsity Event was a repeat mach-up of the 50 sprint event. Taking the majority of the points again, the Winhawks finish 2-3-4 with Senior Co-Captain Bridget Bawek leading Freshman Haley O’Neil and Cotter 7th Grader Morgan Whyte.

The 500 Freestyle is still a work in progress for the Winhawks. Coach Steve Burt is looking to chisel himself out some distance swimmers from the talented group at his disposal. Senior Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl was tapped on the shoulder again in spite of just having raced the 100 fly, and finished 3rd followed by Freshman Gabby Kleinow in 5th.

The Scarlets’ scoring bump in the 500 put added pressure on the 200 Free Relay teams. Would this be the crack in the armor of the Winhawks or would they beat the Scarlets back? The result were swimmers trying to eek out a win and the Winhawk 1st, and Scarlet 2nd & 3rd place relays ALL being disqualified for a swimmer leaving the blocks early in an exchange. The aftermath meant a win for the Winhawk relay of Cotter 7th Grader Morgan Whyte, Cotter Freshman Emily Thurow, Cotter 7th Grader Alex Arnold, and Freshman Gabby Kleinow.

The 100 Backstroke had the Winhawk JV going 2-3-4 led by Sophomore Samantha Johnson. The Varsity event saw a neck and neck race with Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan taking a half second lead in the first 50 and maintaining it to the end. Cotter Freshman McKenna Marg brought home 4th place to keep the event point spread at 8-8.

The 100 Breaststroke sealed the deal for the Winhawks with Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke winning handily with Senior Taylor Johnson in 2nd and Freshman Greer Kosidowski taking 5th.

While the Varsity outcome was wrapped up, the JV was sitting at 82-80 in favor of the Winhawks. The team of Sophomore Samantha Johnson, Junior Kayla Berg, Junior Samantha Berg and 8th Grader Sarah Hunsicker secured the JV win for the Winhawks finishing first. While the deck knew the Winhawks were swimming exhibition, the stands wouldn’t have known it from the race. Senior Co-Captain Bridget Bawek swam the opening leg and was an eyelash behind Mankato but Freshman Reese Galewski made things dead even after two legs. Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan opened up a big lead in the third leg and Mankato pushed hard to make it up in the final leg but was no match for anchor Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke, winning in a time of 3:54.92

Winona Winhawk 2010 Season

Ok, so I gave the WDN the benefit of the doubt. There’ve been a little Football crazy for a few weeks now. I figured they were getting it out of their system. I figured maybe they were saving the Winhawk Girls’ Swimming & Diving season preview article for the day of the first meet of the season. WRONG, nothing appears in print the day of the first meet. Well, maybe they will be covering the meet seeing as there is a Volleyball game scheduled the same night. WRONG! Winona Girls’ Swimming garners 30 WORDS in the Prep Round-up the next morning. They print the great swims by Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan and Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke that are fed to them by the coaches. Unrecognized, Senior Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl also won two individual races. The scoreboard at least gives the fans the race times for the Winhawks, but they managed to spell Sr. Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl’s name right only one of the four times they attempted it.

Although the young Winhawk Volleyball players got a deserved write up on their one sided win over La Crescent, all the WDN reporter had to do was poke his head inside the door 20 feet away and he would have seen an even more domineering performance by the 2010 Winhawk Girl Swimmers & Divers. Also, he would have seen some great performances by some VERY young Winhawk swimmers. With the Senior leadership and raw young talent possessed by this year’s Winhawk team, every meet will be a fun one to watch.

If the WDN had even looked at the results they were typing they may have picked up on the fact that the Winhawks not only won MacKenzie and Alex’s 4 events, the Winhawks won EVERY event. Not only that, but they went 1^st & 2^nd in 7 of the evening’s 12 events and 1-2-3 in the 100 Backstroke.

Perhaps it is because the WDN is so unplugged from swimming, that the score misled them. They still are unaware of the Big 9 Swimming’s firm grip on the most sportsmanship act in the known sporting world. Big 9 Swimming is the ONLY sport that doesn’t drub opponents. Big 9 Swimming is the only sport that stops scoring points, regardless of the winning competitor’s results. Tuesday night, when the Winhawk’s win was secure, the remaining Winhawk races, regardless of whether they were 1^st, 2^nd, or 3^rd, were swum exhibition. So instead of the XXX – 51 score (yes I know the real score but won’t print it), the final came out 88-82 and Menomonie can build on their experience.

What you didn’t read in the paper:

The 200 Medley Relay saw the team of Sr. Co-Captain Sam Quandahl, Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke, Freshman Reece Galewski and Freshman Haley O’Neil finish in 2:00.22 which is faster than ALL the regular season swims from last year! Right behind them in 2^nd place was the team of Cotter Freshman McKenna Marg, Senior Taylor Johnson, Bluffview 7^th Grader Hanna O'Neill, and Cotter Freshman Emily Thurow.

The 200 Freestyle was dominated by Cotter Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan in 2:02.62 putting her off to a fast start for the season. Making a BIG splash in her debut as a Winhawk, Cotter 8^th Grader Morgan Whyte placed 3^rd in 2:18.86. What an exciting career this young swimmer has in front of her!

The 200 IM was won easily with plenty of margin by Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke in 2:27.70. Placing 3^rd and swimming less than a second off her fastest time from all last year, Freshman Reese Galewski is progressing very nicely and looks to score well this season.

The 50 Freestyle saw Sr. Co-Captain Bridget Bawek motor to a 1^st place win in 26.38, a great start for her final season. Placing 3^rd, Freshman Haley O’Neil swam a 27.64, only 0.08 seconds off her fastest time for last year! Right behind her in 4^th place was Sr. Taylor Johnson also a fraction off her fastest time from all of last year.

Again, I have to lament the Diving venue being the Winona Middle School. The Winhawk swimming fans are deprived of watching some great diving and points being scored for the home team. Tuesday’s opening night was no exception, with the Winhawk divers going 1-2. Winhawk Sophomore Crystal Franzwa kicked off her season with an all time point high, winning the competition amassing 206.30 points. Following her up in 2^nd place was Sr. Co-Captain Lianna Hawthorne at 174.70 points.

The Butterfly is one of the toughest events in swimming, and Tuesday’s 100 Fly event illustrated that as there were some open blocks for the start. Only 3 swimmers stepped up and the Winhawks pulled out another 1-2 finish. Freshman Reese Galewski, capitalizing on an aggressive USA Winter and Summer program smashed her best time of last year to win in 104:05. Showing the crowd some stamina (although not a surprise to those of us that know her), young Bluffview 7^th Grader Hanna O’Neil stroked her way to a 2^nd place finish in 1:16.61 which would have been the 5^th fastest time of the season last year.

The 100 Freestyle, the other sprint event, saw another 1-2 finish. Cotter Jr. MacKenzie Brosnahan smoked the field winning in 55.33. Freshman Haley O’Neil brought home 2^nd.

The 500 Freestyle is 20 lengths of swimming at a pace that will allow you to perform your best. Swim too fast early and you run out of gas. Start out too slow, and you loose time that you can’t make up at the end of the race. Then there is the competition to consider as well. Sr. Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl was asked to fill an experienced swimmer void in the Winhawk Distance line-up. She took the race out with the Menomonie swimmer at her side and just slowly, lap by lap, inched forward of her competitor. In the end she pulled out a quality win by a body length and a half, in 5:58.85. Cotter 7^th Grader Morgan Whyte, in her second big showing of the night,  placed 3^rd and fellow youngster 8^th Grader McKenzie Porter out sprinted the Menomonie Indian in the lane next to her to pull out a well won 4^th place.

The 200 Freestyle Relay is a collection of four go-fast swimmers. When you have multiple lanes racing at once, all you see is water splashing and the bodies look like they are planning across the top of the water. Every 30 seconds or less another body is flying off the starting blocks. For the 5^th time in the evening, the Winhawks finish 1-2, and in the 200 Free Relay that is saying something. The team of Sr. Taylor Johnson, Sr. Bridget Bawek, Freshman Haley O'Neill, and Junior MacKenzie Brosnahan took first handily and Freshman Gabriel Kleinow, Cotter Freshman Emily Thurow, Cotter 8^th Graders Alexandra Arnold and Morgan Whyte brought home a surprising but well deserved 2^nd place.

The 100 Back saw the only 1-2-3 finish of the evening for the Winhawks. Sr. Co-Captain Samantha Quandahl slightly rested from her 500 Free win, cruised to also win here in 1:09.37. Cotter Freshman McKenna Marg showed great progress coming within 8 tenths of her fastest time last year taking second and 8^th Grader McKenzie Porter, the other 500 contestant,  rounded out the event sweep for the Winhawks in her backstroke debut.

The 100 Breaststroke saw a solid 1-2 by Cotter Sophomore Alexandra Zuelke and Senior Taylor Johnson. Freshman Greer Kosidowski, working hard all summer long with the USA Wizards Swim Club, swam her best time ever in bringing home the 4^th place points for the Winhawks.

The 400 Freestyle Relay was fun time for the Winhawks, knowing they had the meet in the bag, The big guns, Sr. Co-Captains Bridget Bawek and Samantha Quandahl teamed with Cotter standouts MacKenzie Brosnahan Alexandra Zuelke to cruise to the victory.

Thursday at 1PM at Winona SHS Natatorium, the Winona Winhawks take on Mankato West. MW already has two meets under their belt, swimming in the Hutchinson Invite and losing to Faribault 96-88. They have similar numbers of swimmers and range of ages from a half dozen seniors down to 7^th graders.  Watch for MW Freshman Danielle Nack when she is in the water. She returns from a State Meet appearance last year and is already burning up the water. This week Nack set two Mankato State U pool records. The first came in the 200 freestyle, where she set a new mark with a time of 1:55.06. Next was the 500 freestyle, where she broke the old record by six seconds, finishing in 5:06.83.

The 2010 MYAS Regionals Swim Meet is in the books and Winona Winfins Swimmers scored very well

Winona took more swimmers than they had in a long time and it was reflected in their final score. Of 77 teams scoring, Winona placed 16th place. With a swimmer count that must have approached 1000, (the results are three columns wide and 62 pages long) a number of standout Winona swimmers made their age group lists as high scorers.

Alexandra Zeulke, MacKenzie Brosnahan and Roger Brosnahan are all swimming their usual Zone and Champ times.

Roger Brosnahan’s 50 Free would currently rank as the 5th fastest 50 this year in the State MSI/USA System.

Roger already has the 11th fastest 100 Free in the state, this swim would have been just outside it.
