After finishing side-by-side in eth Section True Team, Winona & Owatonna should not have much for surprises for each other.
Owatonna will really test the Winhawks in the early events.
The 200FR will require a big effort from the Winhawks and will be a big determinant on the outcome.
The 50 FR will showcase the Owatonna Sprinter Erica O’Neill.
Too bad diving is over at the Middle School. The Winhawk divers will have a great test diving against Owatonna’s Sam Kniefel. FR Crystal, and JR’s Lianna Hawthorne and Erin Buswell will need to execute but should outscore the Huskies.
The 100FL will require JR Sam Quandahl and 8th gr Reese Galewski to be at their best to negate the team of Schneider and Johnson from Owatonna. This will be a good race and could tip the scales in either direction.
The 100FR will be its usual nail biter, look for a close 2-4th place race.
Owatonna has a sub 6 minute swimmer in Lindsey Price so Coach Burt will have to pick a Winhawk to try and counter that effort and score some additional mid-place points.
The 200FR Relay will be fast and neck and neck the entire way.
Winona can score some big points in the 100BK and they may need them at that point.
The 100BR will be a good contest for FR Alexandra Zuelke, if JR Taylor Johnson and a younger Winhawk can deliver the Winhawks could score big.
The 400Fr Relay should go to Winona, the only question is if the Winona “B” Relay can edge out a second place.

Weekend Recap and the weeks ahead
The Winhawks hosted the Section 1AA True Team meet last Saturday. Roch JM, Faribault, Owatonna, and Farmington joined them in a test of how deep their talent goes within their team. The results show both the strengths and weaknesses of each of the teams as they prepare themselves for the end of the season.
The Winhawks are reaching the peak of their workout schedule swimming 5,000 yards in the afternoon. The 200 Medley Relay was probably the most telling for the Winhawks, finishing in 5th a nearly a second and a half behind the next team.
The 200FR saw SO Mackenzie Brosnahan battle the strength of Roch JM finishing just out of second place.
The 200IM saw 8th gr Reese Galewski finishing highest for the Winhawks. Winhawk JR Erin Bernardy produced her personal best time dropping nearly 3 seconds.
In the 50FR, FR Alexandra Zuelke and JR Bridget Bawek went 5 & 6 with mid-26’s.

The 400FR Relay was a satisfying repeat of the 200FR and ended the meet on a high note for the Winhawks. The Team of JR Bridget Bawek, SO Olivia Staats, SO Mackenzie Brosnahan and FR Alexandra Zuelke brought home 2nd place in 3:54.25.

This Saturday, the Section 1AA True Team Meet hosted by the Winona Winhawks
Saturday both the Winona Middle School and the Winona Senior High pools will be churned up as five teams join Winona to compete in the Section 1AA True Team Meet.
True Team Meets are a concept put together by coaches to truly gauge the depth of their teams. Unlike a dual or invitational where a team is limited to 3 entries, in the True Team Meet format, a team is allowed to enter as many swimmers as they want, and the event scores all of the swimmers entered. There is a restriction on how many events a swimmer can be in, This format allows the Section teams to enter all their swimmers and truly gauge their depth against the other entire teams.
Joining Winona in the pool will be fellow Section 1AA combatants Rochester John Marshall, Rochester Century, Owatonna, Faribault, and Farmington.
Rochester John Marshall is undefeated in dual meets coming into this week with a second place finish in the Lakeville Relays and a first place finish in the Packer Invitational last weekend. They are a very strong squad led by the Fujan sisters, JR Catlin and SR Brianna. 9th gr Alison Schumacher set a pool record Thursday evening in the 50FR, at 24.48 and diver JR Megan Lawson will place high over at the Middle School as well.
Rochester Century swam twice this week and I suspect they won those contests, putting them at around 8-1 on the season. Their only loss coming to Rochester JM. Perhaps they will be a little worn out and the other teams can capitalize. Winona swam against them back on 9/15 and lost 95-87. The Century swimmers to keep an eye on include Sr. Kathleen VanDeVoorde BK, Jr. Jennifer Strom BR, Jr. Claire Anderson FL, and SR. Gretchen Heidorn FR.
Owatonna came away from the Packer Invitational last weekend in a 3rd place tie with Rochester Mayo behind, .....wait for it, Rochester JM and Rochester Century. Athletes to watch include Sr. Erica O’Neill in the 100FL & 100BK, SR Diver Samantha Kniefel has been scoring well all season and SO Lindsey Price will look to score high in the 500FR.
Farmington comes down from the edge of the TC Metro area where they swim in the Missota Conference (as did yours truly wayyyyy back when). Watch for SR Kristin Peters, a standout in the 200 & 500 FR.
Faribault at 7-1 also only has one loss, to the same foe Roch Century did, and that would be Roch JM. Look for Rochester JM Rockets standouts SR. Jenna Peanasky in the 200FR, Diving keep an eye on JR. Chelsea Borwege and come distance time, JR Ellie Erickson in the 500FR.
Lastly the Winona Winhawks enter the meet 6-1 and ready to defend their home turf. They haven’t been in competition for 8 days and I believe they are ready to take on all comers. Watch for SO Mackenzie Brosnahan to make a statement early, SO Oliva Staats had a stand out evening in their last meet and I would look for her to continue that trend. FR Alexandra Zuelke will lead the charge in the 100BR and JR Utility swimmer Samantha Quandahl will be contributing in the BK and plugged in where ever the squad needs her most. 8th gr diver Crystal Franswa will get her first chance to make a statement in front of the Section 1AA talent she will see in again in November. Winona should score some big points from their sprinters in the 50FR, 100FR, 200FR Relay and 400 FR Relay, when JR Bridget Bawek, SR Co-Captain Aimee Peterson, and 8th gr Haley O’Neil hit the water. The College Season Kicks Off
This Thursday marks the start of the college swimming season. Minnesota State University Mankato gets first dibs swimming Thursday afternoon for their Men's & Women's Intrasquad contests. This Saturday the University of Wisconsin River Falls does the same with their Intrasquad meets.
By the way, just as we start including discussions on college swimming and keeping a watch, word is out amongst the swimming community that UW-RF is talking about shutting down their swimming program for lack of a modern facility. Contact the following administrators before Wednesday Afternoon about the shortsightedness of that decision and the benefits of a swim program to the athletes, college community and the community.

Speaking of Watching Former Winona Swimmers in College
It got me to thinking about the opportunities for young people to continue their swimming and diving after high school. Having only one of the two Winona four year institutions supporting swimming & diving, it is easy to loose sight of the idea that a student can select a school that suits them both academically and socially/athletically. (By the way, every chance I get, I mention to Dr. Judith Ramaley at WSU that a new pool and swimming program would be a good addition to the institution. I just told her Saturday night at the athletic scholarship auction that she would look good in a Winona State Swimming Shirt! Feel free to chime in!)
Sorry, I digress, as I was saying, I combine social and athletics because unlike high school, many times a college Freshman is going to an environment with no connections, no “circle” to speak of. A college selection that includes joining a swim team makes for an instant group to associate with and coaches that can provide an reassuring anchor. I was both a college athlete AND a dormitory head resident. I saw first hand how acclimation into college life was augmented by group association or soured by isolation and home sickness.
Following up on Winona swimmers at college, and then starting to do some perusing, I have found over 50 colleges, from Div 1 through NAIA, in the six state area (MN,WI, ND, SD, IA, IL) that have swimming and diving programs.

The Swim Season Heats Up
We are mid-way through the High School Girl's season with Sections and the State Meet coming up next month in November.
The Winona Wizards USA Team is practicing with their first meet coming up in a month.
The YMCA Winfins team is completing their Stroke Clinic and start practices a week from Monday.
Add to that, this week starts the kick-off of the College swimming Season. Winona has graduates swimming at the University of Minnesota (Matt Papenfuss & Abbey Staats), University of Wisconsin Eau Claire (Alyssa Trainor), University of Wisconsin River Falls (Roxy Pingry), and Minnesota State University Mankato, (Mary Bastian).
There will be some other large meets going on to keep note of.
The USA Swimming Gran Prix Series returns this year and again, the first stop is in Minneapolis at the University of Minnesota on November 13. With the 2009 AT&T Short Course National Championships taking place on Dec 4th, I suspect there will be some big names competing in Minneapolis. I will watch for the psyc sheet to come out and let you know who is planning on attending. It is a nearby opportunity to take yoru young swimmers to see some great swimming and see some names in the swimming world. In Minneapolis the swimmers are very easy to approach and get autographs from.

The Winona Wizards USA Team is practicing with their first meet coming up in a month.
The YMCA Winfins team is completing their Stroke Clinic and start practices a week from Monday.
Add to that, this week starts the kick-off of the College swimming Season. Winona has graduates swimming at the University of Minnesota (Matt Papenfuss & Abbey Staats), University of Wisconsin Eau Claire (Alyssa Trainor), University of Wisconsin River Falls (Roxy Pingry), and Minnesota State University Mankato, (Mary Bastian).
There will be some other large meets going on to keep note of.
The USA Swimming Gran Prix Series returns this year and again, the first stop is in Minneapolis at the University of Minnesota on November 13. With the 2009 AT&T Short Course National Championships taking place on Dec 4th, I suspect there will be some big names competing in Minneapolis. I will watch for the psyc sheet to come out and let you know who is planning on attending. It is a nearby opportunity to take yoru young swimmers to see some great swimming and see some names in the swimming world. In Minneapolis the swimmers are very easy to approach and get autographs from.

Another impressive win for the Winhawks.
The Winona Winhawks go to 6-1 after a 98-84 win over the Rochester Mayo Spartans. Again, there was some uncertainty for each team due to swimmers being ill, but it was pretty even between the two teams. Both coaches had to do some line-up shuffling based on who was and was not available.
The 200Med Relay was hotly contested and the Mayo team touched out the Winhawks by less than a second to take an 8 – 6 lead.
The 200FR was the start of an awesome evening for SO Winhawk Olivia Staats. Staats dominated the 200FR touching in 2:08.90, a full 12+ seconds in front of the Mayo swimmers on both sides of her.
The score is now tied 15 – 15.
The 200IM sees Mayo pull off a 1 -3 finish with Winhawk SO Mackenzie Brosnahan taking 2nd in 2:24.66 with 8th gr Reese Galewski and JR Erin Bernardy scoring additional points for the Winhawks.
Score Mayo 24 – Winona 22
The Freestyle Sprinting Events continue to be strong points for the Winhawks and Thursday was no exception. In the JV event Winhawk JR Erika Johnsrud, SR Deni Cisewski and FR Samantha Johnson finish 1, 2, & 4. The Varsity Event sees Winona’s JR Bridget Bawek, in spite of missing some time out ill, take a strong first in 26.85. Winhawk 8th gr Haley O’Neil continues to impress taking 2nd and JR Taylor Johnson touches out lane 5 for 4th place.
Winhawks 34 – Mayo 28
Diving scores big points as well with FR Crystal Franswa, JR Lianna Hawthorne and SR Erin Buswell score an impressive 1,2,3 finish.
Winhawks 47 – Mayo 30
The 100FL sees Mayo Big Gun SR. Katelyn Crowley take first with SO Alexandra Zuelke, JR Samantha Quandahl and 8th Gr Reese Galewski taking 2, 3, & 4.
Score Winona 56 – Mayo 37
The 100FR was a rewind of the Winhawk domination in the 50FR. The JV event sees Winhawk SR Deni Cisewski, SR Co-Captain Cassie McKinley and FR Samantha Johnson finish 1, 2, and 3. The Varsity Event is identical with SO Olivia Staats continuing her rampage and wins going away in 58.73 seconds. JR Bridget Bawek and 8th gr Haley O’Neil bring home 2nd & 3rd.
Winhawks 69 – Mayo 40
In the 500FR Mayo inserted JR Kalene Wileman cranking out a tough 5:54.74. Winhawk SO Mackenzie Brosnahan brings home 2nd. 8th gr Gabby Kleinow seems to have one tough race after another. Here she swims side-by-side with Mayo SR Rachel Cook and digs deep to beat her by 2 seconds at the pad. Winhawk 7th gr McKenzie Porter gets her best time of the season to earn points in 5th place.
Winhawks 77 – Mayo 48
The 200FR Relay was dominated by the Winhawk team of Staats, O’Neil, Bawek and Brosnahan. Their time of 1:47.68 wins by half a pool length.
Winona 87 – Mayo 52
The 100 Back sees the JV go 1, 2, and 3 with JR Erin Bernardy, SO Grace Ell and SO Ashlen Haines. The Varsity event has Winhawk team workhorse JR Samantha Quandahl take 2nd in 1:08.28.
Winona 92 – Mayo 63
The 100BR JV sees strong swims out of 8th gr Greer Kosidowski and Razil Campbell taking 1st & 2nd. The Varsity Event featured another dominating performance by SO Alexandra Zuelke winning by nearly 6 second in 1:13.77. Winhawk JR. Taylor Johnson brought home 2nd in 1:19.38.
Winona 98 – Mayo 73 (Winona starts to swim exhibition to wave points)
The 400FR was the cap on SO Olivia Staats’ very strong evening. Swimming lead-off she and Bawek, Brosnahan and Zuelke bring home 1st with a nearly 3 second margin in 3:58.03.
Final score Winona 98 – Mayo 85
