Biggest pack of Swimming Winhawks in 10 years headed to the Big Swim.

The Winona Winhawks are headed back to the State Championships as a group for the first time in 3 years and the most bodies in 10. They will be competing in the 200 Medley Relay, 50 Freestyle, 100 Freestyle and 200 Freestyle Relay.

The Medley Relay of Senior Co-Captain Ryan Whalen swimming Back, Sr. Santio LaPorta at Breaststroke, Butterflyer 8th Gr. Roger Brosnahan and anchor at Freestyle Jr. Louie LaPorta will be the first Medley relay at state for the Winhawks in 4 years. Swimming in the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle for the second year in a row will be Sr. Co-Captain Ryan Whalen. Wrapping up their participation will be the 200 Freestyle Relay of Jr. Louie LaPorta, Sr. Jonathan Birdsall, Sr. Ryan Whalen and 8th Grader Roger Brosnahan.

Recent Winhawk History at State:

The 2009 Championships saw then Jr. Ryan Whalen appearing in the 50 & 100 Freestyles and Travis Bernardy in the 100 Breastroke.

Back in 2008 Winhawk standout Matt Papenfuss was there all alone, competing in the 100 & 200 Freestyle.

Not since 2007 has any Winhawk relay advanced to State. The group of then 9th grader Ryan Whalen, Travis Bernardy, now U of MN Gopher swimmer Matt Papenfuss and Mike Johnson qualified in the 200 Medley Relay. They made it to finals and placed 16th. Matt Papenfuss also swam the 100 & 200 Freestyle.

In 2006, the 200 Medley Relay also qualified. Then 8th Grader Ryan Whalen joined by now SMU Cardinal Swimmer John Fox, now Gopher Matt Papenfuss and Mike Engen. They placed 22nd in the Friday Prelims. Matt Papenfuss swam the 200 Freestyle in prelims and John Fox finished 10th in the 100 Breaststroke.

There appears to be a drought in the early 2000’s. While records are incomplete, it appears the next prior appearance was in the year 2000. The 200 Free Relay of Matt Keane, Chris Mayer, Chris Hanke, Jason Schneider, was there as well as the 400 Free Relay of Matt Keane, Chris Mayer, Troy Altobell, and Jason Schneider. Additionally Jason Schneider swam the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Freestyle.

It is great to see a resurgence in the Winhawk presence at the Big Swim.

Winhawks rise to the occasion at Sections

Check off the second to the last step to State.

What an amazing effort by the Winhawk swimmers. After some great swims at the Big 9 Conference meet, I was wondering how they would react to their taper. Coach Amy and Asst Coach Steve really managed the boys' tapers well from all appearances. Now, after an after noon of huge time drops, they have to repeat or better them in the Finals on Saturday.

I went to the Rochester Rec Center early Thursday to watch the diving competition. There were only 13 divers for Sections. The repeats from Big 9, JM – 3, Winona -3, Owatonna – 3, Roch Century & Mayo have none. Now add in Northfield – 2, and Farmington – 2, Hastings has none. The low numbers indicate a sad statement for the state of diving.

The Winona divers started slow. Winhawk Jr. Stan Petkov was 6th in the rotation and was buoyed by his Forward 1 ½ ss Pike for 25.30 pts, and a Reverse 2 ss Tuck for 30.45 pts to finish prelims in 9th place. Winhawk So. Dan Karnick was 8th in the rotation. He used his Forward 1 ss 1 Twist for 23.10 pts to place 12th in the prelims. Winhawk diver Jr Justin Bublitz also started slow but rallied with a Back 2 ss Tuck for 29.79 pts and a Reverse 2 ss Tuck for 34.5 pts to finish Prelims in 6th. Moving on to Semifinals, Stan scores three solid dives and moves up into 8th place. Dan also steadies himself and moves up two spots to 10th. Justin steps up against some really stiff competition atthe stop of the standings moving up to 5th as they move on to finals on Saturday.

With only 13 divers (sadly) competing, diving was over in no time. With a 3 hour wait I decided to return to Winona to take care of some tasks rather than stick around for swimming. Hindsight is always 20/20 and this is another of those cases. I am kicking myself for not staying to watch the action.

The Winhawks turned a questionable afternoon into a spectacular one logging some great swims and setting themselves up for a good finish Saturday afternoon.

The 200 Medley Relay has been a strong suit for the Winhawks all year and here at Sections the Winhawks found themselves seeded 2nd behind Northfield. They finish in that same spot dropping a full second on their seed.

The 200 Freestyle saw Sr Co-Captain Josh Danzinger seeded 16th and So.Joey Kleinow seeded 20th .So Avery Prondzinski and Jr. Eric Mueller were in the initial heat. Both guys make phenomenal drops in personal bests as Eric drops 16 seconds and Avery 11 seconds to set the tone! So. Joey Kleinow drops 3 seconds on his season best and Josh drops 6 seconds ad moves up 6 spots to qualify 11th for Saturday finals.

The 200 IM saw Sr. Matt Bagshaw not only record his sixth straight personal best time, this one was a doozey. The first five drops totaled 5 seconds. Matt’s Sections swim shaved off 8 seconds itself, an outstanding effort. Swimming in the next heat, 8th Grader Cal Dretske was inspired and drops 6 ½ seconds on his personal best.

The 50 Free, an event where improvement is usually measured in hundredths, Jr. Louie LaPorta improves his personal best by a over half a second. Sr. Jonathan Birdsall slashes almost 2 seconds off his personal best and moves up from the 22nd seed to 11th and is returning for Saturday’s Consolation Final. 8th grader Roger Brosnahan seeded 10th drops a half second and improves his place to 8th and a spot in the Saturday Championship Heat. Sr. Co-Captain Ryan Whalen seeded first in the event finishes near his seed tiem to swim 2nd seed in Saturdays Championship Heat.

The 100 Butterfly kept the streak of great drops alive. All season the Fly has been the Matt & Roger show for the Winhawks. Matt seeded 15th drops 4 seconds off his former best and gets the 11th seed in the Consolation Final. 8th Gr. Roger Brosnahan shaves off a second to drop below a minute and make the 9th seed for Saturday’s swimming.

The 100 Freestyle sees both Joey K. and Alex Kline drop a second on their bests and Gio Borsari drops 3 seconds. Ryan W. starts and finishes as the 2nd seed for Saturday Finals.

The 500 Freestyle sees 8th Gr. Alex Vaslow improve on his Big 9 swim and Sr. Co-Captain Josh Danzinger shaves 11 seconds off his season low placing him in the Consolation final on Saturday.

The 200 Freestyle relay is the race I am most upset about missing. Seeded 6th, the team of Louie L., Jonathon B., Ryan W., Roger B. swim a 1:31.76 to take the TOP SEED going into Saturday Final. Everyone dropped time, Jonathon’s 1 ½ seconds and Roger’s 1.2 seconds were key with Louie and Ryan contributing 0.5 & 0.4 seconds respectively.

The 100 Backstroke had personal bests across the board. Alex K. and Gio B. both improved and Avery P. shaves off over two seconds to move up the seedings and is swimming in Saturday’s Consolation Final.

The 100 Breastroke saw the most swimmers advance to Saturday. Mic Borsari improved his best by 4 ½ seconds. Jonathan Birsdsall improved on his 18th seed shaving off 4 seconds and making Saturday’s Consolation Final. Both Santino LaPorta and Cal Dretske maintained their seeds and will swim in Saturday’s Consolation Final as well.

The 400 Freestyle Relay of Avery P., Joey K., Louie L., Josh D. at 3:47.06 started and finished in the same place swimming 8th seed in Saturday’s Consolation Final.

Section 1AA Finals are Saturday at the Rec Center at 1:30PM.

Winhawks head to Section1AA Championships with an eye on State.

So the time has come. Getting to the pinnacle in high school swimming is three step process. The first step is the longest. Three months of two-a-day workouts, eight dual meets, three invitationals and a conference championships. Step two is the Section 1AA Swimming & Diving Preliminaries. You have to prepare yourself to swim fast enough to get to the Finals. Step three is two days later at the Section 1AA Finals itself. Swimming & Diving is a quirky sport, where the dual meet and invite records and times mean absolutely nothing with regards to State meet advancement. While definite building blocks, they are all, workouts and meets alike, an investment in qualifying for the trip to the U of M Aquatic Center to take on the best in the state.

There are two ways to advance to the State meet. Finish first or second in the Section Swimming Finals or finish a top four place in Section Diving Finals. You can also advance to State if you swim a qualifying standard time during Finals of the Section meet. Qualifying standards can be found at: http://www.mshsl.org/mshsl/sports/SW2009-10Standards.pdf?ne=2

There is a bit of a different line-up between Big 9 and Sections. Gone are the Mankatos (East & West), Albert Lea, Faribault and Austin. Included from the north are Farmington, Hastings, and Northfield.

Section 1AA Line-up
Farmington High School
Hastings High School
Northfield High School
Owatonna High School
Rochester Century High School
Rochester Mayo High School
Coop: 376 "Rochester John Marshall"
Rochester John Marshall (HOST)
Rochester Lourdes High School
Coop: 490 "Winona Winhawks"
Cotter High School
Winona High School (HOST)

Right now, the 200 Medley Relay is looking good to make it to State. The team of Sr. Co-Captain Ryan Whalen, Sr. Santino LaPorta, 8th Grader Roger Brosnahan and Jr. Louis LaPorta swam a 1:44.93 placing 2nd only 3 10ths out of first at the Big 9 meet. They were 3 seconds ahead of Rochester Century and winner Mankato is elsewhere for Sections. The boys are also just 2 seconds off the State Qualifying time of 1:42.65.

Look for Ryan Whalen to repeat his performance of last year and earn himself a place at the State meet in both the 50 &100 Freestyle.

Winhawk Diver Justin Bublitz has a great opportunity to earn his first trip to State. Finishing 4th at Big 9, a solid performance may punch his ticket to the State Championships.

The 200 Free Relay has an outside chance with 4+ seconds needing to be trimmed to meet the State qualifying time.

Winona Winfins score well at State Championships

Last Sunday, the Winona Winfins traveled to the University of MN Natatorium to compete in the State YMCA Swimming Championships.

The Winfins wrapped up the day in 4th place of the 15 teams attending just a hair shy of 3rd place.

There were a number of great swims and records set. Winona has always made a strong showing at the YMCA Championships. Of the 112 events across the boys & girls age groups, Winona currently holds 12 records or over 10% of the records, until this year. The 2010 Winfins padded that lead.

Swims of Note:

Josh Danzinger had as good a day as you could possibly have in scoring a swimming trifecta. He swam 3 events, he won 3 events and he set a new state record in 3 events! CONGRATULATIONS JOSH!

MacKenzie Brosnahan had 3 wins on the day including setting a new State record in the 18& Under Girl’s 100 Freestyle eclipsing Abbey Staats’ record. She adds that honor to the 1 individual and 1 relay State record she already has her name on. Congratulations MacKenzie.

Alexandra Zuelke had 3 wins on the day in the 14& Under 50 Freestyle, 14& Under 100 Freestyle and 14& Under 100 Breaststroke. Way to go Alexandra!

Winfins Morgan Drazkowski and Thea May score a 1-2 in the Girls’’ 8 & Under 25 yard freestyle!

Raizl Campbell drops 20 seconds off her seed time in the grueling 400 IM.

Hodd Gorman & Kyle Schneider, go 1 – 2 in the Boys 14&U 200 Yard IM

Thea May & Moriah Lemire go 1 – 2 in the Girls 8&U 25 Yard Back

Morgan Whyte drops 17 seconds on her 500 Freestyle to take 2nd place

Winhawks continue to improve right through Big 9 takign 5th.

Last Saturday the Winona Winhawks went to Albert Lea to compete in the Big 9 Championships. If you are a Winona Daily News reader, that and the fact they got 5th place is about all you get to know.

If you were fortunate enough to go watch or are a reader of this blog, then you get to know much more about the great contest that took place. Winona had some excellent swims and got to flex their muscle a little bit.

Their 5th place finish meant they reasserted their wins over Albert Lea and Rochester John Marshall. They found out where they stood against Austin, the meet that weather cancelled and was not made up. They finished ahead of Austin but not by much. It would have been a GREAT dual meet to watch, too bad it did not happen. The Winhawks got some revenge, finishing ahead of Owatonna after dropping the dual meet to the Huskies. As the two will meet each other again at the Section 1AA Championships, they get one more shot at bragging rights.

The 200 Free Relay got things off to a roaring start. The Winhawk relay of Sr. Co-Captain Ryan Whalen, Sr. Santino LaPorta, 8t hGr. Roger Brosnahan, and Jr. Louie LaPorta bettered their 3rd seed with a 2+ second drop. Whalen jumped out to a big lead with his lead-off backstroke. Santino swam solid handing the lead to Brosnahan. The rookie 8th grader held his ground against a SR flyer leaving Louie LaPorta to battle the star sprinter from Mankato West. Louie held him off until the end and was just touched out to score the Winhawks an exciting 2nd place finish.

The 200 Freestyle has provided the Winhawks a big hurdle this season as it is one of the most hotly contested races in the conference and Big 9 did not disappoint. A pool record was set in the final heat by the swimmer from Century. Winhawk Sr. Co-Captain Josh Danzinger swam his seed time and So. Joey Kleinow had a full 2 second drop moving himself up 5 spots in the final standings. Season best times were posted by the rest of eth Winhawks, 8th Gr. Alex Vaslow (8 seconds), Avery Prondzinski and Gio Borsari.

The 200 IM was another tough race for the Winhawks all season with tough competition every week. Drivng that point home, the 2nd seed won with a new pool record with 2nd place ALSO breaking the former pool record. Top Winhawk seed 8th Gr. Cal Dretske swam tough staying in that spot. Sr. Matt Bagshaw swam his 5th consecutive season best.

The 50 Freestyle is one of those exacting races where even small factors have a major impact. Winhawk Sr. Co-captain Ryan Whalen won with a half a second of breathing room. 8th grader Roger Brosnahan lopped off 0.3 seconds on his season best improving on his 12th seed to finish 8th. Also setting a season best Jr. Louie LaPorta moved up on his seed as did Sr. Jonathan Birdsall.

The One Meter Diving at Big 9 is an 11 dive event vs the 6 they throw in dual meets. There is typically only one maybe two 11 dive meets prior to Big 9 so this is really a test for the entire field. With 23 divers participating a single round takes awhile. Diving can be 40% physical and 60% mental so it is a long time between dives to stay mentally sharp and focused while staying loose for your next dive. Winhawk divers Jr. Justin Bublitz, Jr. Stan Petkov and So. Dan Karnick arose VERY early Saturday AM to get to Albert Lea for warm-ups. The Preliminary and semifinal rounds take place prior to any swimmers arriving so as to not unnecessarily add time to the meet. Their were 23 divers to start so the semifinals whittled the field down to 16 divers for finals. All three Winhawk divers, made the cut. Justin was in 4th, Stan was in 15th and Dan was in 16th. Diving is one of those sports where you know little until the end. Variables at play include their routines or dive order. Divers tend to have favorite “honey dives” they stick at certain spots. Dives have degrees of difficulty so scores and places between divers can vary wildly based on what order they do their dives in. Some divers “throw” their best dives eaarly on their list to improve their odds of making the finals. Others look to make Finals on the consistancy of their early dives and plan to score major points and psycologically effect their competition in Finals. The latter is the strategy employed by the Winhawk contingent. Justin saved for Finals a Forward 1 ½ SS with 1 Twist, Free position a 2.2 degree of difficulty (DD), a Forward 1 ½ ss pike position and a Forward 2 ½ ss in pike position, DD 2.6. Dan threw an Inward 1 ½ ss Tuck position, a Forward 2 ss in Tuck position and a Forward 1 ½ ss 1 Twist in Free position, all 2.2 in DD. Stan finished with a Reverse 2 somersaults in tuck position, 2.3 DD. A Forward 1 ½ ss pike and a Forward 2 ½ ss Tuck with a 2.4 DD. In the end, Justin was able to battle the leaders to maintain his 4th place. Stan was able to score well and move up 3 spots for a 12th place finish. Dan held his ground in 16th. The winning diver from John Marshall kept the day’s theme alive setting a pool record.

The 100 Butterfly has been a two Winhawk show all season long. A grueling 100 yds, Sr. Matt Bagshaw has been the team workhorse here and 8th Gr Roger Brosnahan joined him part way into the season. Matt swam steady maintaining his seeding and Roger picked it up a bit moving up one to finish a solid 7th.

The 100 Free is the other speed event and it did not disappoint. Every Winhawk entered swam his best 100 Freestyle event of the season. Both Alex Kine and Gio Borsari had awesome swims going side by side driving each other to go sub one minute and moving up 10 places in the standings. The next heat saw So. Joey Kleinow drop a half second to move up five spots in the standings. Lastly Sr. Co-Captain Ryan Whalen seeded 1st swam a 48.69 to win just 9 1/100ths off the pool record.

The 500 Freestyle had 8th Grader Alex Vaslow swimming his seed and Sr. Co-Captain Josh Danzinger moving up a spot to finish in the top 8.

The 200 Free Relay had Winhawks L. LaPorta, Birdsall, Whalen and Brosnahan move up one spot to finish 5th with their fastest of the year.

The 100 Backstroke is a building event for the Winhawks wit hall competitors being underclassmen. All showed great improvement, Jr. Gio Borsari dropped over 3 seconds to move up 4 spots. So Avery Prondzinski seeded 16th swam his best of the season as well moving up to 13th.

The 100 Breaststroke saw 9th Gr Mic Borsari improve yet again picking up 3 spots from his seed. Sr. Jonathan Birdsall swam his best of the season to score his seed and 8th Gr Cal Dretske swam to a 12th place finish.

The 400 Free Relay, not a strong suit for the Winhawks, still saw improvement. Seeded 9th the Winhawk team of Prondzinski, Kleinow, L. LaPorta, and Danzinger move up a spot to 8th.

Congratulations Winhawks on a great Big 9!

Big 9 Weekend for the Winhawks

Saturday the Winona Winhawks travel to Albert Lea to compete in the Big 9 Conference Championships. Here are the standings as of this past week:

Big Nine Standings
Rochester Century          7-1-0
Mankato East/Loyola     7-1-0
Owatonna                       6-2-0
Mankato West                5-3-0
Rochester Mayo             3-6-0
Faribault                         3-6-0
Austin                             3-5-0
Winona Winhawks         3-2-0
Rochester John Marshall 1-7-0
Albert Lea                       0-8-0

You never really know how the teams will fare for Big 9. The Conference Champion title carries nothing more than bragging rights or chest beating perhaps (insert Tarzan yell here). Hey speaking of, maybe that is why swimming lacks some notoriety or rings a bell with younger kids these days. I grew up watching TV on Saturdays with Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller swimming up and down rivers, wrestling alligators and pulling native warriors out of canoes. He even would high dive off of cliffs and tall trees into the rivers. Swimming and diving was cool. I even learned to “Tarzan swim” when I received my lifeguard training. That was what they called it then when you swam with your head up watching where the drowning victim was last seen. Then there was Sea Hunt with Lloyd Bridges, he was scuba diving, but swimming none the less. No, there are no idols on screen or set that swim well. They go over waterfalls, I have seen Michael Douglas, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and even Harrison Ford makes the big ride. But they never show the star (or their stunt doubles) swimming, just shots of them climbing out of the river somewhere downstream. Yes, I believe we need more swimming actors and actresses. Some that are capable of doing a front crawl at speed and swimming lengths underwater, Anyway, I digress.

Big 9 doesn’t determine anything regarding Sections and State. It is a timed final event, so you get one shot at getting a top or high finish. The coaches have some swimmers taper for Big 9, others for Sections and fewer yet for State. So it is hard to predict how the teams will fare at Big 9, but it will be fun to watch.

Here is the roster for the Winona Winhawk boys team.

YMCA Winfins Head to State

The Winona YMCA Winfins are heading to the YMCA State Meet this weekend at the University of Minnesota. The team is representing Winona well. By my calculations, of the 112 events, on average a Winona swimmer has the 3rd fastest seed time or better in 36 of the 112 events (32.1%). They have one of the two fastest seed times in 21% of the events and they hold THE fastest seed time in 17% of the events (19 of the 112 events). Considering the size of the meet, number of clubs and number of swimmers attending, that is impressive. An obvious gap is the Boys 10 – 12 age group where Winona is definitely thin.

I’ll post results when I receive them, but here are Winona’s entries this weekend. Good luck Winfins!

Results from the Minnesota Challenge last weekend at the University of Minnesota

Local swimmers were in action last weekend at the University of MN Aquatic Center. Former Winona Winhawks Abbey Staats and Matt Papenfuss were representing the U of MN and John Fox was swimming for the Cardinals of St. Mary’s University. Also in the water was the Winona Water Wizards Head Coach Tom Walsh winding down his collegiate career at St. Mary’s.

It appears everyone had excellent swims. Abbey Staats’ father told me she saw limited action as they are tapering Abbey for peak performance at the Big Ten Championships that start on February 17th. Abbey made a rare Butterfly entry in the Women’s 200 Medley Relay. Her group took 7th (The No. 10 ranked Gopher Women put together 8 relays and dominated the event winning 8 of the top 9 places).

Matt Papenfuss had a GREAT weekend. He opened up with a 5th place finish in the 50 Freestyle. Matt then swam a personal best while WINNING the 200 Freestyle. He followed that up with a 3rd in the 100 Freestyle. He then wrapped up his speedy weekend by helping his relay to take first in the 400 Free Relay.

Winhawks win thriller against Conference foe Rochester John Marshall

Winona pulls out their hardest fought dual meet of the year. The teams’ scores were within a few points throughout the meet. The Winhawks started out in the lead, had it taken away in the 200 IM and regained it right away with a strong 1-2-4 finish in the 50 Freestyle. From that point on the Winhawks had the lead but couldn’t pull away. Each event that extended their lead was followed by a Rochester showing that reigned them back in. Then the second to the last event was the final straw. Sr. Santino LaPorta, 8th Gr. Cal Dretske and Sr. Jonathan Birdsall pulled off a 1-2-3 finish respectfully putting away the meet for good.

The The Winona Winhawks opened the meet with a win in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of Sr. Captain Ryan Whalen, Sr. Santino LaPorta, 8th Gr. Roger Brosnahan and Jr. Louie LaPorta swam a solid time a few hundreths off their best of the year for the win and 8 points. The “B” relay team of So. Avery Prondzinski, 8th Gr Cal Dretske, Jr. Matt Bagshaw and Sr. Jonathan Birdsall, dropping 2 seconds since their winning swim against Owatonna, saw a great neck and neck race. Swimming side-by-side the entire race, they just touched out JM for 2nd place and maximum points.

Score Winona 12 Rochester JM 2

The 200 Freestyle saw JM recover some of their 10 point deficit with a 1-2 finish. Sr. Co-Captain Josh Danzinger brought home 3rd. Jr. Gio Borsari scored finishing 5th in his best time of the season.

Score Winona 16 Rochester JM 14

The 200 IM gave JM their only lead of the night. Their 1-3-5 finnish was broken up by a 2nd place finish by 8th Gr. Cal Dretske and a 4th by Jr. Matt Bagshaw who bettered his time for the 5th consecutive meet!

Score Winona 22 Rochester JM 24

The 50 Freestyle was a statement by the Winhawks that the pool belonged to them .Sr. Co-Captain Ryan Whalen won in 22.78 with 8th Gr Roger Brosnahan right behind him in 2nd and a season’s best 24.11. Sr. Jonathan Birdsall added points also swimming his season low of 25.19.

Score Winona 34 Rochester JM 28

The 1 Meter Diving proved to be a battle as predicted. JM was able to reign in the Winhawk point total scoring 1-2. The Winhawk divers, Jr. Justin Bublitz, Jr. Stan Petkov and So. Dan Karnick finished 3-4-5.

Score Winona 40 Rochester JM 38

The 100 Butterfly propped the Winhawks right back up with 8th Gr, Roger Brosnahan winning 1st with room to spare. Swimming his second sesaon best time of the night, Jr. Matt Bagshaw brought home 2nd place.

Score Winona 50 Rochester JM 44

The 100 Freestyle was a fun race to watch where Rochester’s Tanner Nimke gave Winhawk Sr. Co-Captain Ryan Whalen as close a race as he has had all year. In the end Ryan pulled away for the win in 50.83. Jr. Louie LaPorta brought home points with his best 100 of the season and So. Joey Kleinow touched out JM for a much needed point in 5th. In the JV Event, the newest Winhawks So. Alex Kline, Jr. Eric Mueller and Fr. Mic Borsari ALL swam seasons best times.

Score Winona 59 Rochester JM 51

The 500 Freestyle turned out to me the side-by-side match up that was predicted. Winhawk Sr. Co-Captain Josh Danzinger battled JM’s Nick Cox in the longest event of the evening. While Cox led at the 50, Josh took it away by the 100. They spent the next 250 with Josh just head a shoulders ahead turning together at both ends. About the 40 mark the KM swimmer kicked it down to slide by Josh. At the finish Josh touched 2nd in 5:29.83 fractions off his season best. Scoring varsity points and dropping nearly 30 seconds to a season’s best was 8th Gr Alex Vaslow.

Score Winona 64 Rochester JM 62

The 200 Free Relay of Louie LaPorta, Jonathon Birdsall., Ryan Whalen, Roger Brosnahan swam their best of the Season to touch out JM for 1st. The “B” relay of Joey Kleinow Gio Borsari, Cal Dretske and Josh Danzinger swam a solid 3rd place for some much needed additional points.

Score Winona 74 Rochester JM 66

The 100 Backstroke, which has been an achilles heel in prior meets, saw Jr. Avery Prondzinski step up and drop 4 seconds to a new season low and 2nd place. Equally inspired, Winhawk Jr. Gio Borsari swam his season best as well to score 4th place points to help keep the Winhawks in the lead.

Score Winona 80 Rochester JM 76

The 100 Breaststroke proved to be the trumpet call for the Winhawks. Sr. Santino LaPorta, 8th Gr Cal Dretske and Sr. Jonathan Birdsall followed each other up and down the pool. With the crowd going crazy the three swimmers brought the Winhawks a 1-2-3 sweep of the event and put the meet away for Winona.

Score Winona 93 Rochester JM 79

The 400 Free Relay was time for some fun. With, the win in the bag, both relays could be disqualified and the Winhawks could still win. That being said, the “A” relay of Avery P., Joey K., Louie L., Josh D weren’t through yet. In spite of Avery swimming his season’s best split and Joey swimming a solid leg, JM lead off with their two best sprinters and opened up a 14 second lead. With JM half way up the pool as he left the blocks, Winhawk Jr. Louis LaPorta put in his fastest split of the season making up half the deficit. Now leaving the block with JM only body lengths ahead, Sr. Co-Captain Josh Danzinger swam like it was his last dual of his career making up the defict, overtaking JM at the 80 yard mark and puling out the win and setting up the Winhawks for their run at the Big 9 Conference meet.

Final Score Winona 101 Rochester JM 85

What do you do when a Rocket comes a callin’?

Thursday night the Winona Winhawk (2-4) Boy’s Swimming & Diving Team hosts the Rochester John Marshall Rockets (1-6).

Rochester JM finished 10th at last year’s State AA Swimming & Diving Championships so they know what success tastes like. Coach Bachman will be looking to hone his team as they approach season end so the Winhawks will have a good meet on their hands.

The sole returning state qualifier for JM, now Sophomore Tanner Nimke is versatile and Winhawks Head Coach Amy Schulz will have to anticipate where JM Coach Paul Bachman will enter him so she counter or make the most of his off events.

Look for the Winhawks to score well in the 200 Medley Relay, the 100 Butterfly and the 100 Breaststroke if Jr. Santino LaPorta and 8th Gr Cal Dretske have a good night.

The 50 Free and 100 Free should be great races to watch if Winhawks Sr. Captain Ryan Whalen is pitted against the Rockets’ Chris Bram.

The diving will be hotly contested and a great event to watch. Oh that’s right, we still dive at the Middle School so we won’t get to watch a great battle take place. At any rate, the Winhawks can’s count on the 1-2-3 max points they have received the last two meets to keep them in the meet.

The 500 Free should be another close one for Sr. Josh Danzinger who just broke the 5:30 mark at the last meet. JM matches up well with Nick Cox who swims a 5:26.

The 200 Free Relay could be a tough race as well depending on what relays are put together by both squads. They have swum best times this season within a second of each other.

The 100 Back has been a weak point for the Winhawks this season and JM may look to load up and score some points in this event.

If JM needs to, they can put together one heck of a fast 400 Free Relay. The Winhawks have to have either it put away before that or hope JM has depleted their roster. If that is the case, it could be a nail biter finish.

Winhawks victorious over Holmen

The Winona Winhawks hosted the Onalaska Holmen Boys Swimming Team Monday night in a repeat of their annual border crossing.

The evening started on a somber note. Griffin Wolner, a 10 year old Winona Wizards Swimmer sang the National Anthem in honor of long time La Crosse YMCA Swimming Coach John Brenner who past away Sunday at the age of 54. John Brenner was the La Crosse Y’s Aquatic Director and Head Swimming Coach since 1991 coaching and influencing thousands of kids. The La Crosse Tribune named Brenner person of the year for 2008 after dozens of nominations described his dedication to young people. The YMCA honored him as Swim Coach of the Year at the 2009 YMCA National swim meet.

The Winona Winhawks opened the meet with a win in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of Sr. Ryan Whalen, Sr. Santino LaPorta, 8th Gr. Roger Brosnahan and Jr. Louie LaPorta swam their second fastest relay of the year for the win and 8 points. The “B” relay team of So. Avery Prondzinski, Sr. Josh Danzinger, Jr. Matt Bagshaw and Jr. Gio Borsari saw a great neck and neck race. Swimming side-by-side the entire race, they were just touched out by Holmen for 3rd.

SCORE Winona 8 Onalaska/Holmen 6

The 200 Freestyle saw the future stars of the Winhawks take to the pool. So. Joey Kleinow swimming a gutsy calculated race, was even at the 50, and behind at the 100. SCORE Winona 20 Onalaska/Holmen 25

SCORE Winona 30 Onalaska/Holmen 31

Diving started the beginning of the end for Holmen. The Winhawk fans missed out on seeing a 1-2-3 finish in the One Meter Diving event for the second meet in a row. Adding to the missed opportunity was seeing Winhawk Jr. Justin Bublitz score his highest 6 dive total of eth year at 230.33. Complimenting him, Winhawk Jr. Stan Petkov worked his way to his second highest point total of the year.

SCORE Winona 43 Onalaska/Holmen 31

Adding to the scoring, the 100 Butterfly saw Winhawk 8th Gr. Roger Brosnahan way out in front swimming the fastest fly this year. Jr. Matt Bagshaw came right behind him body lengths ahead of the trailing Holmen swimmers.

SCORE Winona 53 Onalaska/Holmen 36

The 100 Freestyle gave Winhawk Captain Ryan Whalen another chance to display his talent and he didn’t disappoint. Winning by over 6 seconds he was part of a Winhawk 1-2 with Jr. Louie LaPorta scoring the 2nd place points and So. Joey Kleinow getting the final points by a whisker with his second come from behind of the night to touch out Holmen by 0.04 seconds.

SCORE Winona 64 Onalaska/Holmen 41

The 500 Freestyle saw Winhawk Sr. Josh Danzinger go it alone against a full slate of Holmen swimmers. Josh had a slight lead after the first 100 and then buried the field swimming his fastest 500 of the season and winning by almost a half a minute.

SCORE Winona 70 Onalaska/Holmen 50

The 200 Free Relay of Louie L., Roger B., Josh D., and Ryan W won handily with he “B” relay of Joey K. Gio Borsari, Santino L. and Matt B. brining home the 3rd place points.

The 100 Yard Backstroke saw Winhawk So. Avery Prondzinski brings home 3rd for the Winhawks.

SCORE Winona 84 Onalaska/Holmen 66

Swimming the 100 BR for he first time in 5 weeks, Josh out dueled Holmen and swam to 1st place. 8th Gr Roger Brosnahan swam to 3rd place and 9th Gr. Mic Borsari swam his second varsity BR event to the 4th place finish.

SCORE Winona 95 Onalaska/Holmen 70

With the meet in the bag, the 400 Free Relay was a fun time exercise. Winhawks Avery P., Joey K., Gio B., and Santino L. swam the “A relay to and exhibition 3rd and the Winhawk divers Justin B. Stan P. Dan K. along with Alex K. swam to an exhibition 4th.
